Book excerpt: The high cost of energy has resulted in a renewed interest in the study of reducing skin-friction drag in aeronautical applications. Laminar Flow Control (LFC) refers to any technique which alters the basic-state flow-field to delay transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Achieving fully laminar flow over a civilian transport wing will significantly reduce drag and fuel costs while increasing range and performance. Boundary-layer suction has proven to be an effective means of achieving laminar flow over an aircraft wing as demonstrated with the Northrop X-21 program; however, even with the savings in fuel, the high manufacturing and maintenance costs have discouraged the use of this technology. Recent work using threedimensional (3-D) spanwise-periodic distributed roughness elements (DREs) has shown great promise as a means of controlling the crossflow instability responsible for transition over a swept wing without the need for a complex suction system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An F-104G aircraft at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center has been equipped with a specially designed and instrumented test fixture to simulate surface imperfections of the type likely to be present near the leading edge on the wings of some laminar flow aircraft. The simulated imperfections consisted of five combinations of spanwise steps and gaps of various sizes. The unswept fixture yielded a pressure distribution similar to that of some laminar flow airfoils. The experiment was conducted at cruise conditions typical for business-jets and light transports: Mach numbers were in the range 0.5-0.8, and unit Reynolds numbers were 1.5-2.5 million per foot. Skin friction measurements indicated that laminar flow was often maintained for some distance downstream of the surface imperfections. Further work is needed to more precisely define transition location and to extend the experiments to swept-wing conditions and a broader range of imperfection geometries. Download or read book Variable Sweep Transition Flight Experiment (VSTFE)-parametric Pressure Distribution Boundary Layer Stability Study and Wing Glove Design Task written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Variable Sweep Transition Flight Experiment (VSTFE) was initiated to establish a boundary-layer transition data base for laminar flow wing design. For this experiment, full-span upper-surface gloves will be fitted to a variable sweep F-14 aircraft. The results of two initial tasks are documented: a parametric pressure distribution/boundary-layer stability study and the design of an upper-surface glove for Mach 0.8. The first task was conducted to provide a data base from which wing-glove pressure distributions could be selected for glove designs. Boundary-layer stability analyses were conducted on a set of pressure distributions for various wing sweep angles, Mach numbers, and Reynolds number in the range of those anticipated for the flight-test program. The design procedure for the Mach 0.8 glove is described, and boundary-layer stability calculations and pressure distributions are presented both at design and off-design conditions. Also included is the analysis of the clean-up glove (smoothed basic wing) that will be flight-tested initially and the analysis of a Mach 0.7 glove designed at the NASA Langley Research Center.
