Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They say the Bible is true, but does it ring true? Does it resonate? In this journey through the Gospel of Matthew, Matt Woodley considers the audacious idea of a God with us--confronting us in the midst of all we've invested ourselves in and dedicated ourselves to, and encouraging us with the promise that the God who made us has a better life in mind for us. The Resonate series recovers the ancient wisdom of Scripture for a complex world. The stories and insights of each book of the Bible are brought into conversation with contemporary voices of hope and lament--the cultural messages we interact with on a daily basis. The Scriptures become a meeting ground where God is confronted with the pressing concerns of our day, and we are confronted in turn with a fresh experience of God's truth.

This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Jesus left his disciples he gave them the famous commission to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you..." (Mt 28:19-20). The commission actually reveals a unique characteristic of Matthew's Gospel - it was designed to be a training manual for the Matthean community of disciples. Matthew's Gospel was structured along five major discourses on discipleship (Ch's 5-7; 10; 13; 18; 24-25). In addition to these formalized sermons, the gospel contains numerous situational teaching moments. Thus, future disciples are expected to assimilate the entire spectrum of Jesus' teaching content found in both His preaching and practice. The disciple of Jesus should know: - who Jesus is - what Jesus has to say, and - what Jesus did. Knowing who he is will inspire faith in him. Knowing what he commands will guide the disciple in obedience, and knowing what the Master does will provide a pattern to follow. These three lines of inquiry will guide the disciple's development into the image of Jesus. The end-game in following such a manual is that the believer will be prepared to make disciples of others. If this all sounds to you like a pretty tall order, well then you're right. It is a demanding journey! Welcome to The Matthew Journey. This study guide follow's the course taught at Eastpoint Church in Spokane Valley, WA. It is designed to be a thirteen week discipleship/mentoring curriculum for committed disciples.

Book excerpt: This work uses literary (narrative) criticism to explore the world of the evangelist Matthew. The focus is on the plot of the gospel story, with discussions of the storylines, Jesus' speeches and journey, the disciples' experiences, and the contemporary community. The book is a completely revised and enlarged version of the first edition. Two chapters have been added: one discussing the speeches of Jesus and one tracing the storline of the religious leaders. Also, chapter 5 on Jesus' use of "the Son of man" has been substantially rewritten to explain more fully and more clearly the meaning and function of this self-designation. Throughout the book, new topics and insights have been added and developed, and the citations and bibliography have been updated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when segregation thrived and Jim Crow reigned supreme, adventurer Matthew A. Henson defied racial stereotypes. During his teenage years, Henson sailed on vessels that journeyed across the globe, and it is those experiences that caught the attention of famed arctic explorer Matthew Peary. Operating as Peary’s “first man” on six expeditions that spanned over a quarter of century, Henson was an essential member of all of Peary’s most famous expeditions. His unparalleled skills as a craftsman and his mastery of the dialects of native Northern peoples, Henson was indispensable to the success of these missions. Of all voyages which Henson and Peary undertook, none is more groundbreaking then their 1909 journey to Greenland, and onto the previously impenetrable North Pole. Together with a small team of four native Intuits, Henson and Peary became the first team to ever reach the geographic North Pole, forever cementing their place as two of the greatest Arctic explorers of all time. In 1937, the Explorer’s Club honored that achievement, inducting Henson as their first ever African-American member. In 1912, Henson chronicled his recollections of this historic journey in a memoir originally entitled A Negro Explorer at the North Pole. Now reissued as First to the North Pole, this edition of Henson’s memoir features a new foreword by Explorer Club president Ted Janulis, emphasizing the importance of Henson’s historic achievements. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Matt Griffin scheduled his suicide for midnight. He was tired and exhausted. But this wouldn't be a rushed event. He'd planned his earthly exit so none of his four sons would find him, and that his death would ensure they had a better life without him. A father, a former Navy Search and Rescue Swimmer, law enforcement officer, an undercover cop who spent years pretending to be someone he was not, Matt decided he had nothing left to offer his ex-wife, his family, his friends, or his community. But God had bigger plans - and a chance phone call only hours before he decided he'd crawl into his SUV and put his gun to his head, stopped him in his tracks, and changed his life and the lives of thousands of others. The Journey to Midnight is Matt Griffin's memoir about his childhood journey from the inner city and poverty, to a lacrosse scholarship at Morristown-Beard, one of the richest, most prestigious high schools in the country, to the US Navy, then a career as a law enforcement officer and undercover cop. Matt shares the heartbreak of divorce, the joy of single fatherhood, the dark streets of the drug world, and the thing that almost killed him, and killed 228 police officers in 2019, and continues to kill 22 military veterans per day - SUICIDE.

Book excerpt: This unique reflection was prompted by an invitation Matthew Fox received to speak on the centennial of Thomas Merton’s birth. Fox says that much of the trouble he’s gotten into — such as being excommunicated in 1993 from the Dominican Order by Cardinal Ratzinger (who later became Pope Benedict) — was because of Thomas Merton, who sent Fox to Paris to complete a doctoral program in philosophy. Fox found that Merton’s journals, poetry, and religious writings revealed a deeply ecumenical philosophy and a contemplative life experience similar to that of Meister Eckhart, the fourteenth-century mystic/theologian who inspired Fox’s own “creation spirituality.” It is little surprise to find Fox and Merton to be kindred spirits, but the intersections Fox finds with Eckhart are intellectually profound, spiritually enlightening, and delightfully engaging.

Christ's contemporaries ascribed many names and titles to Him, as we see recorded in the New Testament. Each one tells us something different about who Jesus is. In this book, Eric Sammons frames a series of thoughtful reflections on the names of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew with references from the Church Fathers, saints, and Doctors of the Church. He "translates" the depth of the mystery of the Faith so you can discover new dimensions of the person of Christ and new ways to recognize and welcome Him into your life. "This volume exemplifies what the world Synod of Bishops recently called for: sound biblical resources that help people encounter Christ, the Word made flesh, in the reading of Scripture." -- Mary Healy, Ph.D., General Editor, Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture "Eric Sammons knows how to cut to the chase with grace and aplomb. Who Is Jesus Christ? is the most important question that has ever been asked in the history of the human race and he ably helps us answer it -- and all the deepest longings of the human heart -- through the Christ he serves so well." -- Mark P. Shea, Author, Mary: Mother of the Son "Drawing on his own faith journey and his personal experience, Eric Sammons demonstrates how the lived Word of God -- reflected in the lives and writings of the saints and prayers of the Church -- can help us to better know Jesus and to strive to form our daily lives into his likeness. Who Is Jesus Christ? is a work of devotion and readers should find it both inspiring and encouraging." -- Most Reverend Donald W. Wuerl, S.T.D., Archbishop of Washington "Those who read this book will be richly rewarded as they seek to encounter the Lord in Matthew's Gospel." -- Father Giles R. Dimock, O.P., S.T.D., Prior, Dominican House of Studies
