Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of the bestselling Speech-Language Pathology Assistants: A Resource Manual is an essential, practical, and easy-to-use resource for SLPAs and SLPA educators and their students. The text defines the roles of SLPAs and their supervisors—offering additional insight into the scope of practice of an SLPA per current American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recommendations—and includes discussions, strategies, and examples of real-world issues, such as using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Also included within the chapters are important factors and modifications that can enhance the effectiveness of treatment activities. For example, using behavioral principles and incorporating play, literacy, and speech sound remediation into treatment or modifying the clinical interface to enhance group therapy dynamics for children and adults. Initial chapters are devoted to specific aspects of an SLPA’s development, such as chapters on ways SLPAs can enhance clinical service through understanding of goals, lesson plans, data collection, and note-writing. Likewise, chapters on professional practice offer insight into ethical problem-solving, presenting a professional image, developing mentoring relationships, working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and the use of self-reflection for self-improvement. These chapters are followed by key principles for SLPAs to incorporate in clinical services provided to specific populations and disorders. New to the Third Edition: * Updated ASHA documents throughout, including references to the new ASHA Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Scope of Practice (2022) and Speech-Language Pathology Code of Conduct (2020) * New co-author, Margaret Vento-Wilson, brings years of experience in both professional and academic settings and adds a fresh perspective throughout * Significant updates to Chapter 11 on using behavioral principles * New contributing authors bringing relevant updates in the field of speech-language pathology Speech-Language Pathology Assistants: A Resource Manual, Third Edition is a key resource for enhancing skills and highlighting professional practice issues, for clinical practicum training or future employment. This is a text both SLPAs and SLPA educators will want to have on their bookshelves.

Book excerpt: Competencies and Strategies for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants is an introductory text that provides a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities, as well as the day to day expectations, of Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs). It augments the coverage of traditional SLPA topics with chapters on “Professionalism and Ethical Issues,” “Health and Safety,” and “Observation”, thus providing the user with concrete skills that are applicable in all treatment settings. The text acknowledges the ASHA approved criteria for SLPAs, and in addition offers alternative models based on individual state licensure requirements. The text approaches the SLPA degree with the understanding that it may be the starting point to a professional support personnel career, or it may be a ladder to a Speech Language Pathology undergraduate or graduate degree. The content reflects the varied possibilities the SLPA degree can hold for different individuals, in varied treatment settings, across the United States, and encourages users to explore these possibilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this research was to determine the job satisfaction of speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs) in Kentucky schools. An online survey based on three dimensions of job satisfaction was used as the measurement for job satisfaction. A small sample of Kentucky SLPAs was obtained and the ratings from each respondent were calculated into an overall group mean rating. The results of the study indicated that SLPAs in the state of Kentucky were satisfied with their job. Limitations included low return rate and use of an online survey. Further research should include test-retest reliability of the measurement and a larger research sample.

Drawing on data from a quantitative study conducted in schools in the US, the text foregrounds the experiences and perspectives of speech-language pathologists working in the public school sector, and illustrates the critical role of effective and supportive educational leadership and administration in ensuring effective recruitment, retention, and job satisfaction amongst these much needed professionals. The text highlights growing responsibilities of speech-language pathologists in schools and considers recruitment and challenges in the sector can be remedied by greater understanding of how job satisfaction relates to speech-language pathologists’ experiences and perspectives on pay, work, opportunities for promotion, and support from a supervisor. This short text is aimed at researchers, scholars, and administrators in meeting the growing needs of children and students with speech and language difficulties in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary education settings . The text will be particularly valuable for school leaders looking to support speech-language pathologists in their setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goal-Setting in Speech-Language Pathology: A Guide to Clinical Reasoning is the first textbook of its kind on evidence-based clinical decision-making for speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The goal of this text is to fill a pedagogical need for an efficient tool that teaches clinical reasoning to guide treatment planning. There are a number of existing resources in speech-language pathology that describe the how-to of writing goals, but not the clinical decision-making thought process behind the formulation of patient-centered goals. The text strives to address the knowledge gap in clinical learning environments across the scope of learners. Written for graduate-level students in clinical methods courses, it will also be an invaluable resource for novice SLP clinicians. This functional, concise text for clinical coursework or practice explicitly defines the decision-making process used by experienced clinicians from referral to the creation of patient-centered goals. The contents include (1) the purpose for a decision-making framework grounded in both the science of learning and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) clinical competencies, (2) a description of data used in the clinical reasoning process, (3) presentation and discussion of the framework. Key Features * Concise and readily accessible, making it easy to integrate into a single-semester course that only spends a few weeks on clinical decision-making * Serves as a practical how-to guide that uses systematic instruction with hands-on, real-world practice opportunities to teach students and young clinicians the application of clinical concepts * Includes dynamic in-text case studies * Written by authors with a wealth of clinical experience to cover a multitude of populations and settings, including culturally and linguistically diverse individuals Disclaimer: Please note that ancillary content (such as case study answer keys and and videos) are not be included as published in the original print version of this book.

This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is very little discussion of socially just approaches to speech-language pathology. Within other fields of clinically-oriented practice, social justice is a topic that has received a great deal of attention within the last few years. Pedagogy for addressing social justice has been developed in other disciplines. The field of communication disorders has failed to move forward and do the same. Discussion of social justice is important given the current sociopolitical climate and landscape that clients carry out in their day-to-day functioning. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have an opportunity to engage in practices that help address and alleviate some of the injustices that contribute to educational and health disparities experienced by communities of color. They may do this through the development and application of a socially just orientation of culturally competent practice that fosters changes beyond the individual level. Adapting such a framework makes it possible for SLPs to effectively advocate for and foster equity and inclusion for the individuals and broader communities impacted by SLP services. Critical Perspectives on Social Justice in Speech-Language Pathology addresses the socio-political contexts of how the field of speech-language pathology and service delivery can impact policy and debates related to social justice issues. It explores social position factors and the experiences of marginalized communities to explore how speech-language pathologists deliver services, train and prepare students, and carry out research in communities of color. It covers topic areas including disproportionality in special education, disability rights and ableism, achievement and opportunity gaps, health disparities, and LGBTQ+ rights with a focus on voice, communication, and gender-diverse populations. This book is essential for speech-language pathologists, administrators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in how the SLP profession and discipline can contribute to or develop efforts to help address injustices faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.
