Download or read book A Hundred Years of Quarter Sessions written by E. G. Dowdell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1932, this book examines the government of the county of Middlesex from 1660 to 1760. In this period, Middlesex was disadvantaged by its proximity to London, as overburdened Justices of the Peace ignored it for more pressing or urbane duties in the capital. At this time, the old Tudor system of governance was also falling into decay, leading the people to replace the law with more practical and direct forms of justice. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in English legal history.

Book Synopsis English Counties and Public Building, 1650-1830 by : Christopher W. Chalklin
Download or read book English Counties and Public Building, 1650-1830 written by Christopher W. Chalklin and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the modern growth of centralised government, the most important unit of administration was the county. Counties were run by Justices of the Peace sitting together at Quarter Sessions where, as well as trying criminal cases, they dealt with all county business. In the years between 1650 and 1830 a increasing proportion of their time and resources was taken up in erecting public buildings. Building by counties, taken together, represents a substantial and previously little noticed programme of public works. Unlike most other building works in this period, where the details of planning, building, execution and cost are lost, county building is well documented, allowing us to follow clearly the stages of erection. The county building programme reflected changes in society and in the economy, apart from being itself an indication of the growing wealth of the period. A sizeable part of county budgets was spent on bridges. A series of increasingly elaborate bridewells and gaols reflected concerns over employment and crime, also reflected in the erection of judges' lodgings and court houses; the latter being often incorporated in shire halls. Rising humanitarian alarm about mental illness led to the building of pauper lunatic asylums after 1800. English Counties and Public Building, 1650-1830 is an original and important contribution to both administrative and architectural history. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes Magistrate (Justice of the Peace) Henry Fielding's impact on law and literature through his pamphlets, periodicals and novels, in the context of laws, legal affairs, legal administration, and the social-economic political and legal environment present in 18th century England. I demonstrate and argue that among novels of all time the most extensive and diversified coverage of laws, Justices of Peace, lawyers, crimes, and the socio-economic environment, particularly rural 18th century England. Of all the noteworthy 18th century novelists or fiction writers, Justice Henry Fielding is the only one who was also a jurist. This book is also focused on demonstrating how extensively Fielding was consumed throughout his life and the area of law, from his early age to his death, but with a far broader spectrum, education, and experience than anyone except perhaps Lord High Chancellor Hardwicke and Sir William Blackstone. Justice Henry Fielding traveled a long and diversified path in the legal arena to reach the level of expertise, which he deployed in providing his public with Tom Jones, Amelia, and Joseph Andrews as well as his journals and political pamphlets.
