Since audition lists almost always include a few "non-standard" works, the well-versed student will also want to have employed the more comprehensive collections of excerpts in the course of his/her general preparation for an orchestral career. However, the advantages of having the most "important" audition material under one cover will readily be appreciated and makes this book a welcome addition to the literature.

Book excerpt: This study describes in detail the preparation that must be done by aspiring orchestral horn players in order to be sufficiently ready for an orchestral audition. The general physical and mental preparation, through to the very specific elements that require attention when practicing and learning a list of orchestral excerpts that will be performed for an audition committee, is investigated. This study provides both the necessary tools and the insight borne of a number of years of orchestral experience that will enable a player to take a given excerpt and learn not only the notes and rhythms, but also discern many other subtleties inherent in the music, resulting in a full understanding and mastery thereof. Ten musical examples are included in order to illustrate the type of additional information that a player must gain so as to develop an in-depth knowledge of an excerpt. Three lists are presented within the text of this study: 1) a list of excerpts that are most commonly found at auditions, 2) a list of those excerpts that are often included and 3) other excerpts that have been requested but are not as commonly found. Also included is advice regarding the audition procedure itself, a discussion of the music required for auditions, and a guide to the orchestral excerpt books in which these passages can be found.

The follow up video, Excerpt introductions: Strauss Till Eulenspiegel focuses on the opening horn excerpt and guides players in how to approach the excerpt for an audition. Excerpt introductions: Brahms Symphony no. 3, Allegretto introduces the excerpt and in an interview with Eric Kim, Brahms Symphony no. 3, Interview with Eric Kim explores what a horn player might learn from a cellist performing the same music material earlier in the movement. Exploring Shostakovich Symphony no. 5 delves into the politics of music in the time of Stalinist Russia, followed by an exploration of the numerous excerpts contained within the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of Eli Epstein's 18 years in the Cleveland Orchestra and 30 years of Conservatoire teaching. It breaks down into four parts, dealing with Technique, Musicianship, Warm up and Exercises and finally Applying the Method. It is both innovative and inspiring and presents his theories in a clear and understandable way, which gives the reader much to think about and practical ideas to help improve one's playing. An excellent addition to any horn enthusiast's collection. The third edition presents MRI images and data of an elite group of horn players, including Stefan Dohr, Fergus McWilliam, Sarah Willis, Stefan Jezierski (all of the Berlin Philharmonic), Marie-Luise Neunecker, Jeff Nelsen, and others. MRI films confirm that what we do internally, inside the mouth, pharynx, and thoracic cavity is just as important as what we do externally. And, just as there are hallmarks of healthy embouchures that most professional horn players employ, there are many consistent internal movement patterns among the elite group. Epstein presents tried and true methods to learn and teach these exemplary biomechanics. "Without a doubt the most physiologically correct book ever published on horn playing." ~John Ericson, Horn Matters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""A Singing Approach to Horn Playing" trains hornists to play with greater accuracy and musicality by developing the ear. Horn players learn to actively hear the notes on the page through singing and playing the instrument. Each example includes solfège, inner hearing, transposition, and rhythmic training, as well as polyphonic exercises for learning to hear and read in multiple parts. These exercises can be done independently or with a partner. The book begins with folk songs to develop fundamental pitch and solfège skills, starting with three and four note melodies. These songs are followed by canons, solfeggio (vocal etudes transcribed for horn), and standard horn literature. The horn selections enable hornists to apply their musicianship skills to performance, with examples from standard etudes, orchestral excerpts, and solos. The horn parts also include significant orchestral and accompaniment lines to sing and play on horn, so that horn players can perform with practical knowledge of the score"--
Book Synopsis Modern Horn Playing in Beethoven by : Matthew John Anderson
Download or read book Modern Horn Playing in Beethoven written by Matthew John Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I. Abstract The historically informed movement has made it increasingly apparent that orchestras can no longer interpret Beethoven, Mahler, Mozart, and Bach in exactly the same manner. It is now incumbent upon each member of the orchestra, as well as the conductor, to be aware of historic performance traditions in order to color the music with appropriate gestures. It is therefore important for horn players to explore the hand horn traditions of the baroque, classical, and early romantic periods in an effort to perform the correct inflections in a way that the composer might have expected the music to sound. As an example, in the second movement of the Beethoven’s third symphony, beginning in the second half of the eighteenth measure from the end of the movement and going into the next measure, the second horn goes from a concert middle C down a half step to a B natural. Original practice would cause the B natural to be 3⁄4 covered which would have caused tension in the sound. Modern horns can just depress second valve to play the note giving a completely different color. The intention of this document is to inform current and future generations of hornists techniques to not only re-create sounds of the period on modern instruments, but also to create new pathways to learning repertoire through deconstructing the orchestral passages, creating new ways towards a complete understanding of the literature. It would be impractical for a horn player to try to play a natural horn in a modern orchestra due to the fact that the materials used in a natural horn tend to be much lighter than modern instruments, and therefore do not project as well. An examination of audition lists of the major orchestras in the United States reveals that excerpts of Beethoven’s works are frequently listed for major orchestral auditions and are also some of the first orchestral excerpts a young player learns. A study of his works is the best place to begin.

Book Synopsis A Preparation Guide to Horn Excerpts from the Concert Band Literature by : Tiffany Blake Woods
Download or read book A Preparation Guide to Horn Excerpts from the Concert Band Literature written by Tiffany Blake Woods and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each academic year, hundreds of students receive performance degrees from the nation's universities and conservatories. A growing number of students who complete such degrees choose to pursue performance opportunities offered by the military organizations. While the inclusion of orchestral excerpts has been a staple of wind pedagogy for decades, band literature has not been given the same attention. This author believes the inclusion of band excerpt study would improve the level of preparedness for auditions and performance in these professional ensembles. No source exists containing information on the preparation of horn excerpts with which to study the style and literature of the concert band. Although the audition lists differ slightly for each of the premier military bands, the twenty-seven compositions included in this document are recognized as staples of the literature, considered to be works of substantive and high artistic merit, distinguished by historical importance, or are contemporary works which have been well-received. The information collected for each of the works includes biographical information for the composer, a brief history of the composition, suggestions for preparation including technical and stylistic elements, and a selected discography. Audition announcements for the premier organizations are separate from the Armed Forces band recruitment program. These groups often advertise their openings in respective professional journals published by organizations such as the International Trumpet Guild, International Horn Society, International Trombone Association, and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association, as well as union magazines, including the International Musician. Requirements often include performance of a standard concerto and works from the excerpt list (orchestral and band), as well as sight-reading and ensemble playing. In some cases, such as the Navy Band, fifty percent of the audition is based on the candidate's sight-reading ability, an area that consists of transcriptions of standard orchestral literature and original compositions for band. Reading/performance sessions with the ensemble can vary from the full concert band to smaller chamber ensembles (brass quintets, woodwind quintets, and horn sections). Well-prepared candidates should be equally comfortable with the orchestral and band literature."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
