During a Christmas eve wedding at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, Ellen and her friends are visited by multiple ghosts. The spirits have come to tell their stories, to right the wrongs that history has done to their memories. Each of them died in Asheville with their voices stifled. One spirit is particularly adamant and threatening, despite her small size, and her mood fluctuates like the mountain winds surrounding the great estate. She claims to be the ghost of Zelda Fitzgerald, and she wants her story told, even if she has to kill to make it happen. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Ellen and her two best friends share a mid-life crisis by hatching a plan to renovate an 1860's Greek revival in the nearby historic district of San Antonio. Although Ellen isn’t one to believe in ghosts, she comes face to face with something inexplicable in the attic. Her ghost-enthusiast friends convince her that they must help the spirit find closure, and as they dig deeper into the past, they uncover a shocking history that someone in the neighborhood doesn’t want exposed. But Ellen and her friends don't give up easily. They realize they've been called to give voice to the invisible women who suffered behind the walls of the house for decades. "Slightly wacky ladies, humor & good intentions result in a very interesting story. I’ve already ordered the second one in the series."--Lynne J. Condon ★★★★★ "They begin a dangerous quest digging into the real history behind the Gold House. What they find will blow your mind! My heart was racing throughout this entire book. If you believe in ghosts or even if you don't, I suggest reading by a lamp. I jumped several times as if a movie were playing inside my mind. . . . The three women in this book are wonderful. This is definitely a must-read. 5 stars for Eva! Well done!!"--Book Lover Reviews ★★★★★ "I chose this book to read because I had an awful cold and figured that if I wasn't impressed, I'd just skip finishing it! Boy was I wrong! It was really good! Even when my eyes said they were tired and should be resting, my mind said you gotta keep going. It was a real treat!"--Lynn Reener ★★★★★ "This captivating tale of three friends setting out to renovate and flip a house is definitely not your average haunted house story. The three lead characters and all the other people in this story (whether major players or merely peripheral persons) are so carefully crafted with their own unique personalities and attributes that they spring to life in the reader’s mind. The story, itself, is mesmerizing with all the back-story details of the characters’ lives and especially with the convoluted and macabre history of The Gold House (the house purchased by our leading ladies). This is one of those stories that is achingly hard to put down when bedtime rolls around or something requires your immediate attention. It really is that good."--txdoc, Goodreads Reviewer ★★★★★ "This is my first experience with author Eva Pohler and I can't believe I haven't read anything of hers before! Loved the book and I'll be checking out more in this series."--The Novel Lady ★★★★★ "Loved reading this book. So sad that there were people mistreated in our former days. These types of retreats or rest care facilities actually used to operate in the US for many years. Some state owned too. IN The 70 ALL were shut down. THE GHOST that haunted the house and her ancestors first tells a telling tale about what happened inside the walls of the house three women buy and restore to its former glory."--Cozy Mystery Reader ★★★★★ "This is a real page turner. Riviting, and exciting. The characters are very well written, its easy to read and you won't want to put it down."--Southermermaid85, Goodreads Reviewer ★★★★★ "Secrets of the Greek Revival sent a rollercoaster of emotions throughout this story. I couldn’t put this one down. If you are looking for a great read then this is your book. I seriously didn’t know what was coming next. As I don’t like to give away spoilers, and believe me you would not want me to, I will however tell you that I enjoyed this book so much I kept, switching from reading to audio so I could enjoy while driving to and from work."--Denise M. ★★★★★ Grab your copy to begin this ghostly adventure today! Ransom letters and threats of kidnapping her sons, Patrick and Andrew, led Eveline to gangsters and situations that forced her to relive her previous life in New York State. Many individuals from her past and present had been involved in attempts to undermine her wealth that she inherited from her late husband, Wallace Paine. After attempts and threats to kill Eveline, a detective from the Miami Police Department, Jonathon Bingham, is assigned to the case and proceeds to uncover more criminal activity than expected. Eveline had believed the corruption that was exposed years ago, and put to a trial in Rochester, New York, a few years earlier, had been concluded. She is still haunted by suspicious characters and circumstances that appear to be people and events from her former life in Geneva, NY. After many months of uncertainty, situations unfold causing Eveline to learn the truth about people in her past when she and Eleanor Roosevelt share lunch at the Biltmore Hotel. After learning new information, Eveline is forced to rethink and face what had happened many years ago. Being concerned about her future now, because everyone is either dead, in prison, or moved away, Eveline suffers from a recurring ailment that has implications for her future. From The House of Many Windows and The Spirit of Wallace Paine to The Haunting of Eveline Paine, Eveline is forced to overcome unbelievable odds which ultimately give her the freedom for a new life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the palace hotels of the elite to cheap lodging houses, residential hotels have been an element of American urban life for nearly two hundred years. Since 1870, however, they have been the target of an official war led by people whose concept of home does not include the hotel. Do these residences constitute an essential housing resource, or are they, as charged, a public nuisance? Living Downtown, the first comprehensive social and cultural history of life in American residential hotels, adds a much-needed historical perspective to this ongoing debate. Creatively combining evidence from biographies, buildings and urban neighborhoods, workplace records, and housing policies, Paul Groth provides a definitive analysis of life in four price-differentiated types of downtown residence. He demonstrates that these hotels have played a valuable socioeconomic role as home to both long-term residents and temporary laborers. Also, the convenience of hotels has made them the residence of choice for a surprising number of Americans, from hobo author Boxcar Bertha to Calvin Coolidge. Groth examines the social and cultural objections to hotel households and the increasing efforts to eliminate them, which have led to the seemingly irrational destruction of millions of such housing units since 1960. He argues convincingly that these efforts have been a leading contributor to urban homelessness. This highly original and timely work aims to expand the concept of the American home and to recast accepted notions about the relationships among urban life, architecture, and the public management of residential environments.
