Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the President's Cabinet It was upon advice with the late Professor B. A. Hinsdale that the author selected The American Cabinet for the subject of an academic investigation. But the assistance that was to come from one who was both historical scholar and father was soon taken away. The prosecution of the work has been several times postponed. But the period of delay has been one of phenomenal activity among librarians and editors in the field of Americana. And the slow com pletion has perhaps been justified by the use of larger stores of critical biographies and private papers. The latter kind of material is specially important to the subject; and it is one that, at the best, lags a generation behind current events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The President's Cabinet: Studies in the Origin, Formation and Structure of an American Institution The following Studies are designed to reveal those factors in the history of the President's Cabinet which explain the origin and formation of the council as well as the establishment of the structural offices which form the institution. They are complete in themselves. Only incidentally are they concerned with cabinet practices and personnel. The study of cabinet practices and personnel is a large and difficult subject. At another time, when I hare succeeded in compassing scattered and refractory materials, I propose to set it forth in accordance with the plan projected in the Introduction. The limited task has yielded results which admit now of the presentation of a book which will throw light, I hope, on a subject concerning which there has been hitherto no satisfactory record. I have felt obliged to give much attention to political debates. "Few forms of literature or history are so dull," says John Morley, "as the narrative of political debates. With a few exceptions, a political speech like the manna in the wilderness loses its savour on the second day." On the other hand, the truths of my subject were not to be extracted at many points from any other sources. These sources, too, afforded frequent glimpses of men of marked distinction, and accordingly helped to relieve the structural aspects of the theme by supplying warmth and life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Presidents and How We Make Them Our American system makes the President the centre and focus of political life. He is at once Prime Minister and independent executive. He blends the functions of what in parliamentary government is the head of the Cabinet, and what in other government is the head Of the State. He is a vital part of the legislative power without being amenable to its control or dependent on its life. He is the framer of policies and the arbiter of parties. All this makes the election of President the central chord and the arterial force Of our broad political action.
