Goodall gained notoriety as a pluralist in an age of pluralism. He attached himself to the person of Sir Thomas Gooch, Master of Caius and Bishop of Bristol, Norwich, and Ely successively. There is no doubt that he succeeded very well at the trade. When Gooch, as ex-oflicio chairman of the Trustees, secured the Mastership of the Perse for his chaplain, Goodall was already a Fellow of Caius. In 1742 his patron obtained the living of Mattishall in Norfolk for him by an act of gross jobbery.' Five 1 The Master and Fellows of Caius were the patrons of the living, but the Fellows did not want to present Goodall. Being fully aware of this fact, Gooch as Master of Caius declined to convene a college meeting. The appointment therefore lapsed to the Bishop of the diocese, who was none otherthan Gooch himself. Goodall was then appointed forthwith. years later he was given the two livings of Bixley and Framlingham Earl in the same county, and twelve months later became Archdeacon of Sufiblk. During the whole of this period he remained Master of the Perse. As Goodall spent most of his time in attendance on his patron, the school was left to the care of his Ushers, ' who, fortunately, were not so neglectful of their duties as the Master. Almost for the first time since the days of Griffith boys came to the school from places beyond the immediate neighbourhood, and once more a few Perseans proceeded to the University. Of the three Ushers responsible for this recovery Charles Davy (Usher, 1747-51) deserves more than passing reference. Later in life he published Letters addressed chiefly to a Young Gentleman (1787) and several other treatises on education, which have obtained a place for him in the Dictionary of National Biography....

Book Synopsis Classical Scholarship and Its History by : Stephen Harrison

This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is unusual for a single scholar practically to reorient an entire sub-field of study, but this is what Chris Stray has done for the history of UK classical scholarship. His remarkable combination of interests in the sociology of scholars and scholarship, in the history of the book and of publishing, and (especially) in the detailed intellectual contextualisation of classical scholarship as a form of classical reception has fundamentally changed the way the history of British classics and its study is viewed. A generation ago the history of classical scholarship still consisted largely of accounts of particular scholars and groups of scholars written by other scholars from a broadly biographical and ‘heroic individual’ perspective. In these works scholars often sought to find their own place in the great tradition, choosing to praise or blame those whose work they admired or deprecated, and to identify with particular schools or trends, and there were few attempts to provide a broader and less prosopographical perspective. Almost all the chapters in the volume originated as papers at a conference in honour of the honorand, and have been improved both by discussion there and by the rigorous peer-review process conducted by the two experienced editors. It covers various aspects of classical reception, with a particular focus on the history of scholars, their institutions, and their writings; the main focus is on the UK, but there are also substantial engagements with continental Europe and (especially) the USA; the period covered runs from the Renaissance to the present. The cast contains a number of world-famous names. Unusually, the volume also contains an essay by the honorand, but we are very keen to include this, especially as it focusses on the topic of scholarly collaboration.

This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Newnham College, Cambridge This little book is primarily intended for present and past students of Newnham College and for the numerous friends who have been helpers or sympa thetic spectators of its early progress. At the same time I venture to hope that it may prove interesting and suggestive to a wider circle of persons practically or theoretically concerned in movements for the higher education of women. Of the deficiencies of this short history, no one could be more fully aware than the writer herself. But for the expressed wish of the Council of Newnham College, it would never have been attempted, nor could it have been written at all without the kind co-operation of friends, who, like myself, had known the College from the inside. I would especially thank the present Principal, Miss B. A. Clough, and the Registrar, Miss E. M. Sharpley, for supplying me with information and with kindly criticisms through out my task. It has been gratifying to realize that the Publisher is son of an early friend of the College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
