Book excerpt: The family of Eglí, belonged to the anient German tribe of the Langobards (Longbeards), which settled in the northern part of Italy in the fourth or fifth century AD. The ancestor of the Swiss Eglí's emigrated from the Canton of Tessino to the Canton of St. Gall, about the twelfth century. This ancestor had five sons, three of whom settled in the department of the Loire, in France, subsequently, upon the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, removing to the Canton of Zürich, where they became followers of the Swiss reformer, Zwingli, whilst the other two remained in the Canton of St. Gall. A branch of the latter, somewhat later, emigrated to the Canton of Lucerne. The St. Gall and Lucerne families adhered to the Roman Catholic faith, but a family relation with the Zürich branch was constantly maintained. The orthography of the name is somewhat perplexing, from the fact that Egle is that adopted by the Zürich branch, while that of Egly by those of St. Gall. The first settlers in America wrote their name Egle, and the American branch are all descended from one Marcus Egle.Adam Eagle (1726-1799) son of Marcus Eglí (1690-1767) and Anna Barbara Buehler Eglí (1694-1730), enlisted in 1775 as a private in Captain James Ross' Company of Pennsylvania Militia. He was then promoted to Wagon Master of Colonel William Thompson's Battalion of Pennsylvania Rifleman in the Continental Army of the Revolution. In 1786, Adam Eagle's son Philip Eagle was living in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina where he farmed land. In 1792, Philip and his wife Hannah sold 165 acres. This land was part of a 400 acre grant owned by Hannah's father, John, and conveyed to Philip in 1786. The land was located on the waters of Little Coldwater Creek. In 1795, Philip Eagle appears on the Rowan County tax list.George Eagle, Sr. (1752-1820) son of Marcus Eglí (1690-1767) and Anna Barbara Buehler Eglí (1694-1730), received a Land Warrant for 100 acres on the northeast side of Dutch Buffalo Creek in Litaker Township, Rowan County, North Carolina. George served in the Revolutionary War in Captain McKee's Company of the 1st Regt. Rowan County NC Militia. George was discharged 10 April 1782. George Eagle's occupation was a gunsmith. This work is their story. Their descendants in Rowan County, North Carolina who many spread out to other counties and states. The author has compiled many resources over many years to present this book in its present form. I hope you will learn more about your Swiss ancestors and understand that no genealogy book is ever completely finished.

Book excerpt: Victor Naily/Neely, Thomas and Robert Neely immigrated from Tyrone, Ireland at about the same time. They all three lived in Tyrone, York, Pennsylvania at the same time. Eventually, the Neelys all moved to South Carolina. Robert and Thomas moved to York County, South Carolina while Victor moved to Fairfield County. It is commonly presumed that these three Neelys are brothers as they are of the same age range. They also lived close to one another both in Pennsylvania and in South Carolina. Victor's surname is listed as Naily in early records while Robert and Thomas used the spelling of Neely which is still their common spelling today. Victor Naily changed the spelling of his surname to Neeley and all of his line still use that spelling. A great tool used in genealogy today is that of DNA testing of the male Y-Chromosome pattern. This chromosome is passed down through the male blood line and it remains constant through the generations. This Y-chromosome pattern has been tested by male descendants of these three Neely brothers. Their Y-chromosome patterns are all the same. This means that they all have the same common ancestor in Ireland. Various Neely researchers have linked these three Neelys to a John Neely in Tyrone, Ireland. While I have no proof that he is their father, I have no problem in assuming that he is their father. I will let it stand as fact until it is proven differently. This genealogy traces the descendants of a William Neely born 1596 in Scotland and who died in 1696 in Donegal, Ireland. There are two divisions in this line. One is of Robert and Thomas Neely in York County, South Carolina while the other is that of Victor Neeley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Middle Ages in the early 1400's, Ulrich Bössinger was practising as a goldsmith in Prittriching, a small town in Bavaria, and in 1430, his son, Franz Bössinger, also a goldsmith, was appointed Master of the Mint (Munzmeister) in Augsburg, Bavaria, later moving to Schwaz in the Tyrol, where he died in 1441. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. Many of the modern family names throughout Europe reflect the profession or occupation of their forbears in the Middle Ages and derive from the position held by their ancestors in the village, noble household or religious community in which they lived and worked. The addition of their profession to their birth name made it easier to identify individual tradesmen and craftsmen. As generations passed and families moved around, so the original identifying names developed into the corrupted but simpler versions that we recognise today. Over the centuries, most people in Europe have accepted their surname as a fact of life, as irrevocable as an act of God. However much the individual may have liked or disliked the surname, they were stuck with it, and people rarely changed them by personal choice. A more common form of variation was in fact involuntary, when an official change was made, in other words, a clerical error. The eagle depicted in the arms is emblematical of fortitude and magnanimity of mind. The Romans used the figure of an eagle for their ensign, and their example has been often followed. It is the device of Russia, Austria, Germany and the United States of America. However, the Rowan County Basingers are traced back to Switzerland and this book is about their lineage and stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War changed the United States in many ways—economic, political, and social. Of these changes, none was more important than Emancipation. Besides freeing nearly four million slaves, it brought agricultural wage labor to a reluctant South and gave a vote to black adult males in the former slave states. It also offered former slaves new opportunities in education, property ownership—and military service. From late 1862 to the spring of 1865, as the Civil War raged on, the federal government accepted more than 180,000 black men as soldiers, something it had never done before on such a scale. Known collectively as the United States Colored Troops and organized in segregated regiments led by white officers, some of these soldiers guarded army posts along major rivers; others fought Confederate raiders to protect Union supply trains, and still others took part in major operations like the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Nashville. After the war, many of the black regiments took up posts in the former Confederacy to enforce federal Reconstruction policy. Freedom by the Sword tells the story of these soldiers' recruitment, organization, and service. Thanks to its broad focus on every theater of the war and its concentration on what black soldiers actually contributed to Union victory, this volume stands alone among histories of the U.S. Colored Troops.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
