Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Great Minnesota Forest Fires: Sandstone, Mission Creek, Hinckley, Pokegama, Skunk LakeIN launching this little volume upon the turbulent sea of an existence which may or may not prove altogether satisfac tory, the author feels called upon to state that in this work it is not his aim or desire to make an'especially interesting and readable volume, but more' particularly to chronicle a few facts in as terse a manner as may be relativeto, he thinks without exception, the most horrible calamity which has befallen any portion of the human race in modern times. He desires that what facts be here presents may be absolutely authentic in every detail, and his purpose in giving this work to the public is to place in a concise and readable form a full account of the fire in its awful voracity together with a description of the country over which it passed, and enough personal experiences to give the reader some small idea of the excruciating suffering of the survivors. Also thc efforts of a, generous people to alleviate their suffering, aswell as the heroic efl'orts of those upon whose courage and strength of character rested the lives of many hundred human beings. Pen cannot picture and tongue cannot tell the whole story. Young men will grow gray and their children gray and still history will hold no parallel to the Hinckley Forest Fires. The Johnstown Tragedy, so-called pales into insignificance beside it, as to the area affected and the amount of property destroyed, if not as. To loss of life; and let us hope and pray that from this time on we may be de livered from so terrible an ordeal as has just been undergone by the good people of Kanabec, Pine and Aitkin Counties in Minnesota and Douglas, Burnett and adjoining Counties in Wisconsin.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 1, 1894 two forest fires converged on the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, trapping over 2,000 people. Daniel J. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book on to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasma-like glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames. In some instances, "fire whirls," or tornadoes of fire, danced out from the main body of the fire to knock down buildings and carry flaming debris into the sky. Temperatures reached 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit--the melting point of steel. As the fire surrounded the town, two railroads became the only means of escape. Two trains ran the gauntlet of fire. One train caught on fire from one end to the other. The heroic young African-American porter ran up and down the length of the train, reassuring the passengers even as the flames tore at their clothes. On the other train, the engineer refused to back his locomotive out of town until the last possible minute of escape. In all, more than 400 people died, leading to a revolution in forestry management practices and federal agencies that monitor and fight wildfires today. Author Daniel Brown has woven together numerous survivors' stories, historical sources, and interviews with forest fire experts in a gripping narrative that tells the fascinating story of one of North America's most devastating fires and how it changed the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a force in nature more powerful than multiple atomic bombs—that was the Great Hinckley Fire of September 1, 1894. In only four hours, the fire incinerated over 400 square miles of forest, killed at least 418 settlers and an unknown number of forest-dwelling Native Americans, and destroyed six towns in a firestorm of flame. The elements that led to this unprecedented catastrophe included careless logging practices, a drought, freakish weather, and suspected sparks from passing locomotives. The story of the 1894 fire is a saga of devastation, heartbreak, heroism, survival, hope, and rebuilding that captured worldwide attention. Recently discovered photographs provide a backdrop for a fresh look at the events surrounding the disaster and the courage of the pioneers who survived to tell the tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of the Minnesota Forest Fires, in the Year 1894: With a Chapter on the Forest Fires in Wisconsin, in the Same Year The question with which a man has to do, who writes memorials of events, which are worthy to be had in remembrance, is one of accuracy what really took place; when, where, how and what were the results. To depart from what is the strict truth is to do violence to history, to invent, not narrate events, and the writer who descends to it finds to his cost that "Fiction entices and deceives, and sprinkled o'er her fragrant leaves, lies poisonous dew." It is my aim in these memorials to set in order the suffering nobly endured, the great losses sustained, and the prompt and generous help given so freely by men in every walk of life, professors of all religions and of none, saint and sinner, rich and poor alike. In the doing of this, it is my hope to further the ends of Christian charity, and the mutual regard man owes to his fellow man as being members of one common family, the children of one loving Father. In all historic time the heoric men who have added glory to their age, have been held in high esteem; for them anthems have been sung, monuments raised, processions and gala days arranged; the sweetest poets have sung their fame, and the loftiest prose has told their praise; all this has not been, it is not now, for sentimental purposes; it has a firm foundation, and serves a far reaching and useful purpose. It is by the recital of daring and unselfish deeds that high ideals are kept before the public mind, that youth, in its ardor, in its desire of achievement, may rise to the opportunities presented in all their moral splendor, and thus renew the valor, and conquests their fathers won. It is one of the very first principles which comes into operation in the assimilation of ideas, that men grow like the patterns they set before themselves. All the great writers on morals have pointed this out; every page in books like Mr. Lecky's History of European Morals, proves its truth, and never failing incidents. Sources put the death toll between 29 and 42 people. Thousands were left homeless with winter fast approaching. The American Red Cross assisted survivors; a tent city was built in a day to provide shelter, and many supplies were donated in order to rebuild. The Red Cross and the National Guard immediately began the rebuilding effort and many homesteaders now turned to the chore of land clearing with hopes for a crop in the spring. The lumber mills were either spared or undamaged; and so there was some reason for hopefulness for the future."--Wikipedia Sept. 2011.
