Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who has time for community in the modern metropolis? The answer may surprise you: apparently lots of us. As this book discusses, religious communities have long been an important way for people in all parts of the modern city to come together. Whether in new suburban subdivisions, in rural areas undergoing change, or in inner-city neighborhoods, people of all social backgrounds, races, and economic means have used their congregations as a way to set down new roots and to hold on to old ones. Focusing on Indianapolis, Indiana, a city in America's geographical and cultural heartland, Souls of the City describes the range of changes to America's cities and American religion during the last decades of the 20th century. In showing the historical ability of religious congregations to become "places" of worship, this book challenges those who lament the soulless nature of modern metropolitan life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story of the church’s transformation, told through the lens of a mid-American city. Indianapolis is demographically close to the median American city and has experienced many of the same dynamics as other similarly sized American cities. Indianapolis is also home to a set of unique Episcopal institutions; the Diocese of Indianapolis has benefited from local wealth and close connections to the centers of civic power. In Changing Mission, Unchanging Faith, Lee Little examines the ways that the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis has transformed from one of the most institutionalist religious groups in the city to one of the most progressive. Arguing that the diocese’s unique wealth and status has enabled this transformation, Little also notes many of the tensions still inherent in the church’s close connection to historic, class-based structures. In considering the ways in which the Episcopal Church in Indianapolis has evolved, and the ways that it continues to evolve, Little argues that the diocese represents an example of change that should be studied across the Episcopal Church and the broader landscape of American mainline Protestantism.

The author argues that differing perceptions of authority, responsibility, and accountability lie at the heart of the controversy and do much to explain relationships between nineteenth-century American scientists and the larger community. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a bluff overlooking the White River on the northwest side of Indianapolis stands the architecturally distinctive campus of Christian Theological Seminary. In the west wing of that building is Shelton Auditorium, which houses the Edyvean Repertory Theatre, an institution that during the 1996-1997 season celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. This history tells of the dream of its founder, Dr. Alfred R. Edyvean, to establish his "theatre with a purpose", from its fledgling flights as the Seminary Players, when Christian Theological Seminary was still the School of Religion of Butler University, to its secure reputation as a professionally managed community theatre with six or seven productions a year of high-quality drama. These productions draw nearly 30,000 people annually from across the state. The Edyvean Repertory Theatre at CTS is unique among community theatres for having been established at a theological seminary and having maintained a full season of dramatic presentations for almost thirty years. This history is an effort to determine why it survived and what must be done to keep it alive. (1993 saw the closing of the neighboring Starlight Musicals housed at Butler University and the Theatre Department at Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis.)
