Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Doctrine of the Work of Christ in Its Ecclesiastical Development, Vol. 2 of 2 In the above doctrine we have now to recognize not only the characteristic Protestant form of the doctrine of the work of Christ, but a conception, which so truly corresponds to the fundamentally synthetic character of Protestant theology that it is a synthesis also of the whole of Christianity. It not merely corresponds to the synthesis of law and Gospel and to the synthetic view of the subjective process of redemption, in which the gift of the Spirit and faith, justification and sancti fication are all one; but it also is in reality the same synthesis with each of these others. The whole and the parts, macrocosm and microcosm, are here equal to one another it is the same synthesis in all cases, only that it is regarded under a different aspect. The schema of the threefold office successfully expresses in the one doctrine of the work of Christ the Whole of Christianity, and that as neither the Greek Fathers nor the mediaeval schoolmen were able to do. For in the view of the Greek Church the work of Christ needed to be supple mented by our works and in the mediaeval view, though it procured sacramental grace which made our works possible, it still ultimately needed the same supplement. But in Protestantism Christ is all and does all and the doctrine of the threefold office succeeds in so stating the work of Christ as to show this. His work as Prophet, Priest, and King is complete, and leaves no room for anything which is not simply itself in another form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Doctrine of the Work of Christ in Its Ecclesiastical Development, Vol. 1 of 2 It is stated in the Introduction to this work (cf. Vol. I, p. 2), that its purpose is to trace the antecedents of the modern doctrine of the work of Christ. The result of my investigation is to show that this doctrine in its most typical form, as developed by Schleiermacher and Ritschl, is no arbitrary opinion on the subject, but that the whole course of doctrinal development has led to it by an immanent necessity. This course of development has its nodal points in the four great syntheses (cf. Vol. I, pp. 5-8) in which the various factors that have contributed to the doctrine of the work of Christ have from time to time found a relative settlement. Into these syntheses the threads of doctrine are gathered up, and out of them again they diverge. The gist of my book is accordingly to be found in the sections which treat of these syntheses (Vol. I, pp. 1-8, pp. 258-262, 298-300, 440-444, Vol. II, pp. 5-7, 364-370): in order however to apprehend the full significance of these highly condensed summaries, the rest of the book must be read. In my research for material I have naturally been greatly indebted to the two chief works dealing with the whole of my subject: Baur, "Die christliche Lehre von der Versöhnung in ihrer geschichtlichen Entwicklung von der ältesten Zeit bis auf der neueste" (1838); and Ritschl, "Die christliche Lehre von der Rechtfertigung und Versöhnung, Erster Band, Die Geschichte der Lehre" (3rd ed. 1889). As regards the modern period I also owe guidance particularly to Kattenbusch, "Von Schleiermacher zu Ritschl" (3rd ed. 1903); Tulloch, "Movements of Religious Thought in Britain during the Nineteenth Century" (1885); and Scott Lidgett, "The Spiritual Principle of the Atonement" (2nd ed. 1898). I have, however, everywhere, except in a very few less important instances, investigated the original sources for myself: this was the more necessary as my purpose to treat the special doctrine of the work of Christ from the point of view of the whole of theology (cf. Vol. I, p. 2 f.) involved in many cases a fresh selection of material.

Works on the gradual development of theological truth in the Church of Jesus Christ usually appear alongside of those which deal with the systematic reproduction of it, and thus stand out as separate works. It was thought best to follow this practice, since this will stress the fact that, after all, the history of the development of Christian thought in the Church is a separate study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian faith is based ultimately on Scripture, and most denominations also base their system of doctrine on Scripture. This system is set forth in creeds, confessions of faith, and articles of religion. In this important book Peter Toon discusses the development of doctrine in the church—that is, the attempt to answer questions concerning the nature of doctrine and its relationship to the church. Toon examines the thought of those who have studied and written about the development of doctrine from the nineteenth century to the present. John Henry Newman, Robert Rainey, James Orr, and Karl Rahner are among those whose work is considered here. Toon concludes that we need a way of understanding development that does justice to the unique place of Scripture, to the reality of human society in which the Bible is studied, to the historical situation in which Christians form doctrine, and to the explication of doctrine in precise intellectual terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Theology presents the key pillars of the contemporary church and the development of those doctrines as they evolved from the history of Christian thought. Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs in a strict chronological manner with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies—making for good history but confusing theology. This companion to the classic bestseller Systematic Theology is unique among historical theologies. Gregg Allison sets out the history of Christian doctrine according to a topical-chronological arrangement—one theological element at a time instead of committing to a discussion of theological thought according to its historical appearance alone. This method allows you to: Contemplate one tenet of Christianity at a time, along with its formulation in the early church—through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. Become familiar with the primary source material of Christian history's most important contributors, such as Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Understand the development of evangelical doctrine with a focus on the centrality of the gospel. Discern a sense of urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the whole church. Historical Theology is an easy-to-read textbook for any Christian who wants to know how the church has come to believe what it believes today. Gregg Allison's clear and concise structure make this resource an ideal introduction to Christian doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of change has assumed great prominence in much of the current ferment in theology, and many of the issues in question can best be interpreted as relating to the validity and limits of doctrinal development. The questions cannot be faced constructively, however, until the development of doctrine has been clearly charted, a historical as well as a theological assignment. In this unique introductory survey—more modest in scope but more scholarly in method than Cardinal Newman’s great programmatic essay of 1845—Mr. Pelikan presents three case histories of the particular doctrines that have crucial points of division among Christians. His cogent analyses of Cyprian on Original Sin, Athanasius on the Virgin Mary, and Hilary on the Holy Spirit demonstrate the interaction between the sacramental life of the Church and the intellectual work of the theologian that consistently marked the development of doctrine by the early Fathers. Thus they clarify some central aspects of the continuing theological and ecumenical debates. Mr. Pelikan, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, is the author of many books and articles, including a forthcoming full-scale history of the development of doctrine.
