Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Disciples of Christ: A Contribution to the Centennial Anniversary of the Birth of Alexander Campbell In order to meet the objections of these adversaries, Mr. Glas resolved to investigate the whole question of national covenanting in the light of the Scriptures. The issue of these researches was difierent from any thing he had anticipated. By means of them he not only withdrew the foundation of strict biblical pre cept from beneath the feet of the Cameronians, but the supports upon which his own Church, was estab lished were, in his judgment, likewise destroyed. These covenants, whether in their ancient or their modern observance, proceeded all alike upon the sup position that a connection between Church and State is in accordance with the teachings of the Sacred Word. (glas's Narrative, pp. 1 - 25, also p. On his attaining to the conviction that a union of this nature was not provided for in the New Testament, Mr. Glas became displeased with his own position in the Established Church, as well as with the represen tations of the Cameronians. He was more than ever confirmed in the resolution to take to himself no other rule but the word of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Disciples of Christ: A History of Their Rise and Progress, and of Their Contribution to Their General Brotherhood Disciples in North Carolina, it nevertheless has a much wider interest common to the entire Brotherhood. If the other states which have a valuable historic past would appoint a commission similar to that of the North Carolina brethren and gather all available material as accurately and as carefully as this has been done, it would then be possible to assemble in a two or three volume set a thoroughly dependable history of the Disciples of Christ. This would be a colossal undertaking, but one entirely possible of achievement. Thus there would be preserved for the centuries to come an accurate history of this great Church which in a few more years it will be impossible ever to compile without a joint effort such as this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the Current Reformation, or a Study in the History of Theology of the Disciples of Christ The "Current Reformation" was a familiar name used at the time for the religious movement which has resulted in the "Disciples of Christ" or "Christian Churches." It is adopted as the title best expressive of the phase of this phenomenon of modern church history set forth in this book. The work, as will be evident to every reader, is written from within the movement and in confessed sympathy with it. On the other hand, the writer has earnestly tried to tell the truth. As far as possible, the words ofthe original authors have been made to speak for themselves. The writer has interpreted his duty 33 narration, not praise or blame. He gladly acknowledges the excellent work done by Dr. W. E. Garrison, "Alexander Campbell's Theology"; by Dr. Errett Gates, "The Early Relation and Separation of the Disciples and Baptists," and the "History of the Disciples"; also the service done by C. A. Young, in the publication of "Historic Documents Illustrating Christian Union"; but his own researches have been independent of these and for the most part prior in time. They have been, as the book will show, with the original sources as far as these are attainable on this Western Hemisphere. This book was first written as a Doctor's Thesis in the University of Chicago. Having been added to out of the practical work of the class-room and convention floor in California, its author has taken the occasion of the Texas Christian Lectureship, 1905, to place it in final form. The limitations of the work arc freely recognized at many points. The writerinvites a frankcriticism and will gladly recognize any errors which the reader may be able to point out to him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Apostles of Jesus Christ The materials of this work should be found in all that has been written on the subject of the New Testament history, since the scriptural canon was completed. But who is sufficient for these things 2 A long life might find abundant employment in searching a thousand libraries, and in com iling from a hundred thousand volumes, the facts and illustrations of this immense an noble subject; and then the best energies of another long life would be needed to bring the mighty masses into form, and give them in a narrative for the mind of the unlearned. What, then, is here attempted, as a substitute for this immensily 2 To give a clear, distinct, narrative Of each apostle's life, with such illustrations of the character of the era and the scene in which the inci dents occurred, and such explanations of the terms in which they are recorded, as may, consistently with the limits of this book, be drawn from those works of the learned of ancient and modern times, which are within the writer's reach. Various and nume rous are the books that swell the list of faithful and honest references many and weighty the volumes that have been turned over, in the long course of research; ancient and venerable the dust, which has been shaken into suffocating clouds about the searcher's head, and has obscured his vision, as he dragged many a forgotten folio from the slum ber of ages, to furnish the modern compiler with the rich productions Of antique lore. Histories, travels, geographies, maps, commentaries, criticisms, introductions, and lexicons, have been daily and nightly turned in the hand; and of this labor some fruit is Offered on every page. But the unstained source of sacred history! The pure well - spring, at which the wearied searcher always refreshed himself, after unrequited toils through dry masses of erudition, was the simple story of the Apostles and Evangelists, told by themselves. In this same simple story, indeed, were found the points on which the longest labor was required; yet these, at best only illustrated, not improved, by all the labors of the learned of various ages, were the materials of the work. These were the preparations of months and years; the execution must decide on their real value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of the Disciples in the Western Reserve, Ohio: With Biographical Sketches of the Principal Agents in Their Religious Movement This movement was so unexpected, so rapid, so gen eral, and accompanied by many incidents and events so peculiar, as to stamp the phenomenon with the clearest indications of a providential visitation of great mercy to the world. Many of its first advocates were plain, nu pretending men, called unexpectedly to the front, and urged forward by the resistless impulses of the work it self. Some of these men exhibited fine oratorial powers. They have left their impress durably on a wide and growing society. Brief biographical sketches of the prin cipal e'arly actors in the scenes to pass before the reader can not fail to be interesting to him.
