Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1824-1894 Having recently been compelled to write several brief historical sketches of the Institute the writer became interested in its early history. In preparing these narratives he found the official publications giving the characteristics of the School at the time of its foundation to have become very rare. In fact, very few of them antedating 1840 are known to be in existence. For these reasons he determined to expand the sketches and publish a short history of the Institution which should consist largely of a description of the development of its curriculum. The student of the history of education will recognize the importance of an account of the early methods of instruction pursued in an institution which was, at once, the first School of Science and the first School of Civil Engineering to be established in any English-speaking country, and if the conceded originality of these methods be also considered it is believed that no excuse for the appearance of this somewhat condensed narrative will be thought necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Henry Van Rensselaer: Priest of the Society of Jesus Word of explanation as to the sources from which this life of Father Van Rensselaer has been drawn may not be amiss. The story of the early history of the patroons is found in the Magazine of American History, in an exhaustive paper on The Van Rensselaer Manor, contributed by the editor, Martha J. Lamb. Further details have been gleaned from a carefully written article which appeared some years ago in the columns of the New York Sun. The story of Father Van Rensselaer's conversion is told in an autobiographical sketch found among his papers after his death. This sketch is particularly valuable as revealing, the inner workings of his soul, his habits of thought and temperament, the motives actuating his conduct the long and arduous search for the truth. And the happiness with which his soul was filled when he found himself at last, as he says, over the wall, and safe in the bosom of the One True Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Life, Services and Character of Stephen Van Rensselaer, Delivered Before the Albany Institute, April 15, 1839: With an Historical Sketch of the Colony and Manor of Rensselaerwyck in an Appendix In the affecting ceremonies of his funeral, the Members of the Institute had their humble part. It had been resolved, in special session, that they would attend the funeral of their President in a body. This, however, was not all their duty. It was thought to belong appropriately to them to gather up the memorials of his life and services, and cause them to be arranged and presented before the Society in a regular Dis course. It has pleased those whose charge it was to make the selection, to assign the duty of preparing and presenting this tribute, to me. They might have found many to perform the service more acceptably; not one, since the time had come when the duty must be discharged by some body, to whom it could have been a more grateful office. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Partial Record of Work of Graduates of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute The occupations of the eight hundred and ninety-two living graduates of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are almost as varied as are the more important avocations of men. Its eminent alumni may be found in nearly all professions and in every field of industry. It is, therefore, surprising that there should be a substantial unanimity among them all in attributing to their technical training much of their success in life. Those who have embraced mercantile pursuits are often as enthusiastic as the engineers in commending the education received at our institution. The same might be said of well-known natural scientists, manufacturers, architects and editors. It would be interesting, if practicable, to so classify the whole body of the alumni as to afford some evidence of the effect of technical education in qualifying young men for any business requiring alert, incisive and precise mental power. The purpose of this pamphlet is to deal only with the more simple problem of pointing out the success of graduates of the school in a few of those pursuits which naturally absorb the greater number. The Annual Register contains the names and present residence and occupation of every living alumnus, compiled from the latest sources of information. It is indexed geographically, so that graduates in any community may readily be identified. Men of great reputation in every sphere of life will be recognized by those having but a limited acquaintance with the business and intellectual activities of the day. Registers will be sent to persons interested on request. A more exhaustive investigation of the work of graduates, including that of the most recent classes, is earnestly invited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Van Rensselaer Family The exceptional position conferred upon the Van Rens selaer Family, and for generations sustained, by virtue of its great proprietary estate, is naturally the most conspicu ous fact in its history. The patroonship or manor of Bens selaerswyck, as originally erected, was'diminished at vari ous times in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by alienations including a considerable tract ceded to the city of Albany, two other large cessions (the Coeyman's Trac and an: extensive strip transferred to the state of Massachusetts), and a territory of some sixty thousand acres, constituting the Lower or Claverack Manor, with other lands vested in the younger branch of the family, as'its share, at the time of the settlement of the primogeni tureship, in the reign of Queen Anne. Notwithstanding these alienations, the manor was still the greatest heredi tary property in the state of New York, and as adjusted on its final territorial basis it continued, without further re duction, until toward the middle of the nineteenth century. Throughout this period of two centuries its character as a strictly private estate remained unchanged; and although the formal privileges of civil authority which belonged to its early proprietors, as well as the principle of primogeniture, were abolished in the Revolution, the ancient features of a single headship and exclusive ownership of the soil on the one hand, and a semi - feudal tenantship on the other, were preserved to the last.
