Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Christian Church in the South In September 1971 I met with the Committee by request and agreed to collaborate with the secretary in writing the book. Scott and I were old friends and worked 1n perfect harmony so that I Was able to complete most of the research and begin the manuscript by Feb ruary 1972. The initial draft of the first five chapters had been written when Scott died on July 17 of that year. The Completion of this history was the cherished dream of my, colleague whose last words to me were, This story must be written: Carry'on! And in obedience to that charge I have completed the book. The purpose of this history has not been to glorify the southern Christian Church or any individual or group of individuals among its clergy and membership. Credit has been g1ven where credit was due, but no attempt has been made to belittle Or ignore errors or defects; and, the Church being an institution composed of human beings there were naturally some of both. The main purpose has been to show what the Christians accomplished and to picture the laborious process necessary to attain their goals. The activities of this Church touched the political, social, and intellectual life, in addition to religious affairs in the geographical area where it existed, and only the highlights of each could be included in this account. Individual ministers, local churches, and area conferences could only be mentioned for the part they played in the overall story. Each church and conference has a history of its own and many individuals merit a full biography, but these are subjects for separate treatment apart from this account. Scott and I were in full agreement that this history should strictly conform to the known facts, and to accomplish this aim every possible means was exerted to uncover all data in existence pertinent to the subject. I accept full responsibility for any proven errors in the account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. AS a life, its hidden spring is the Spirit Of Christ in the hearts of believers. As a fellowship or brotherhood, it has, Of practical necessity, certain outward bonds of unity. Christ himself appointed such in the authority of the apostles, in the rite of baptism, and in the eucharist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Christian Church: Six Sermons Preached in St. Paul's Church, Newburyport, Mass It shall be my endeavour to tell a plain unvarnished tale, to indulge in no theories, to avoid speculations, to withhold no fact Of importance to the story, so far as truth may be rec onciled with brevity. I shall not shrink from laying bare the deformity that has marred the record Of some who were chil dren of the Church. There will be pages I shall be sorry to read but none that I shall be afraid to Open. We shall look upon phases of Christian History when lethargy seemed to have laid hold upon the very life of the Church. We Shall trace the origin of sect and division, in no Spirit of Conten tious pride or bigotry; but taking shame and sorrow to our selves where they are due, for the occasion that gave them excuse. We shall come, I trust, to a more perfect understand ing of the work the Christian Church still has to do, and a more intelligent use of that part of the Creed wherein we say, I believe in the Holy Catholic Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of the Christian Reformed Church of America The Christian Reformed Church, as far as its organization in America is concerned, docs not date back any farther than A. D. 1857, a year before the consolidation of that elect remnant of Christ's body, since christened the United Presbyterian Church. As for the origin and early history of the Christian Reformed Church, we have to go beyond the waters, back to Reformation limes and to the old country, the Netherlands. With holy pride and glorious proof we are right in giving her a place of honor as the historic lineal descendant of the Reformed churches in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland, called into being by the grace of God and the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ the Lord. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.
