Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bottle Hill and Madison: Glimpses and Reminiscences From Its Earliest Settlement to the Civil War Nearly all the facts of local history contained in this book are from notes of personal conversations with eye witnesses of the events narrated. The facts were obtained about the year 1855 by the Rev. Samuel Lawrence Tuttle, at that time pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Madison, N. J. With the earnest patriotism which always distinguished him, he sought out many aged people in the neighborhood, and obtained their recollections of the times and events of the Revolution. To embody and preserve these statements has been the main object of this work. The author desires to acknowledge his indebted ness to his daughter, Gertrude Amelia Tuttle, for her indefatigable assistance in arranging its con tents, and particularly in the preparation of its illustrations and embellishments, and the two pencil sketches of Wayne Headquarters and Brittin Store drawn in her childhood. Book excerpt: John S. fuller made these unique photographs between 1860 and 1863, when Abraham Llincoln was in the White House and the nation was facing the supreme crisis in its history. They depict Madison during a period of transition. Despite the impact of a recent depression and prospect of civil war, it was an era of growth for the city, for the state university, and for state government. There were dirt streets, wooden sidewalks, lots of fences and outhouses, and as many horses as people on the streets. But there were also some paved walkways and multi-storied buildings, and a new capitol was under construction. A frontier village was well on its way to becoming a city.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Life and Times of James Madison, Vol. 2 The second volume of the "History of the Life of Madison," prepared for the press more than four years ago, in the state in which it is here given, but prevented from publication by the inauspicious circumstances of the times, is now submitted to the judgment of the reader. It comprehends the most instructive, and, in a civil and political view, the most eventful period of American annals, - from the close of the war of the Revolution, down to and including the formation and establishment of the Constitution of the United States. It was during this period that the embarrassments and disorders incident to the imperfect system of confederation by which the States were held together - kept in check, while the war was in progress, by the spirit of union and strenuous patriotism awakened by the crisis - at length broke out in all their nakedness and force. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Life and Times of James Madison, Vol. 3 It was the design of the author to complete this work - the employment and solace of his declining years - in a fourth volume; but death put an end to his labors, at Castle Hill, Virginia, on the 25th day of April, 1868. The present volume embraces all of his hitherto unpublished history that he had prepared for the press, and brings the narrative down to the close of General Washington's administration. Others may do justice to the epoch of American history which he was not permitted to reach in his portrayal of Madison's career; but it is not too much to say, that no living writer is so well qualified as he was, by intimate intercourse with Madison, and by special study, to treat adequately the constitutional and early political history of the country. In these pages, it is believed his countrymen will see reflected much of the experience, learning, ability, and eloquence which won for the author the highest distinction in the service of his native State, and, in a wider sphere, as Member of Congress, Senator of the United States, and Minister to France during two eventful periods of her revolutionary history. A general Index to the three volumes, prepared with skill and fidelity by Dr. John Appleton, cannot fail to add to the convenience and value of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Madison County, State of New York Local historians have materially aided the progress of the work. Jones' Annals of Oneida County, Clark's Onondaga, Turner's History of the Holland Purchase, Hatch's History of the Town of Sherburne, - for all of which the author asks forbearance for having so freely used in extract. In all sections of the county, old families have been visited, family records perused, and time-yellowed documents examined. Statements have been taken from the lips of many aged men and women who lived through the days when toil and privation was the heritage of all, several of whom are now resting from their labors, and from them no farther record can be gained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America During the First Administration of James Madison, Vol. 1 TO succeed Robert Smith at the Navy Department, Madison selected Paul Hamilton, of South Carolina. Nothing was known of Hamilton, except that he had been governor of his State some ten years before. N o' one seemed aware why he had attracted the President's attention, or what qualities fitted him for the charge of naval affairs; but he appeared in due time at Washington, - a South Carolinian gentleman, little known in society or even to his colleagues in the government, and little felt as an active force in the struggle of parties and Opinions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Life and Times of James Madison, Vol. 1 The following work has been undertaken from no ambition of authorship, to which the active and diversified pursuits of the writer's life present every possible discouragement. It was felt, however, that some account of the character, opinions, and actions of the man who contributed more largely and effectively, though unobtrusively, to the formation of the institutions under which we live than any of his contemporaries, and who was the elective head of the Government at a period of external difficulties and trials which gave the United States definitively a rank among nations, was a desideratum in the history of the country. The capital and credit on which England's power rested were swept away; the poorer classes were thrown out Of employ ment; the price' of wheat,1 which averaged in 1807 seventy-eight shillings per quarter of eight bushels, in 1808 eighty-five shillings, and in 1809 one hundred and six shillings, in 1810 rose to one hundred and twelve shillings, or about three dollars and a half a bushel, and remained at or above this rate until the autumn of 1813; while abroad, the Spanish peninsula was subdued by Napoleon, whose armies occupied every part of Spain and Portugal except Cadiz and Lisbon.
