Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Ancient Egyptians As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this vol ume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based di rectly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this pur pose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in to to), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Trans lations, bar). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are re ferred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original monument, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliog raphy will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a mass of workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 The work here offered to the public, conceived and commenced in the year 1876, was designed to supply what seemed a crying need of English literature - viz., an account of Ancient Egypt, combining its antiquities with its history, addressed partly to the eye, and pre senting to the reader, within a reasonable compass, the chief points of Egyptian life - manners, customs, art, science, literature, religion - together with a tolerably full statement of the general course of historical events, whereof Egypt was the scene, from the foundation of the monarchy to the loss of independence. Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Priests of Ancient Egypt One becomes accustomed to seeing, in the ancient Egyptians, 'the most scrupulously religious of all men.' But this statement does not suffice to offer the keys to the Pharaonic civilization; in fact it would be a great error to consider the Egyptians too close to ourselves. Nothing, without doubt, is more modern than these stone heads found in the mastabas,1 than the bust of Queen Nofretete; nothing more alive, human in a reassuring fashion, than the scenes of daily life pictured in the tombs of Saqqara or 'of Thebes; nothing perhaps so directly familiar as the popular stories from the shores of the Nile. But beware of thinking that the ancient Egyptian was a man like us, that his civilization was basically analogous to ours, that his thinking was, in the progress of a world still imperfectly known, the beginning of modern thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Ancient Egyptians This little book is intended to serve as an elementary introduction to the study of Egyptian Literature. Its object is to present a short series of specimens of Egyp tian compositions, which represent all the great periods of literary activity in Egypt under the Pharaohs, to all who are interested in the study of the mental development of ancient nations. It is not addressed to the Egyptological specialist, to whom, as a matter of course, its contents are well known, and therefore its pages are not loaded with elaborate notes and copious references. It represents, I believe, the first attempt made to place before the public a summary of the principal contents of Egyptian Literature in a handy and popular form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians, Vol. 1 of 2 I have here and there introduced some remarks relating to the Greeks, thinking that a comparison of the habits and arts of other people, with those of the Egyptians, may be interesting; and the impulse now given to taste in England has induced me to add some observations on decorative art, as well as on colour, form, and proportion, so well understood in ancient times. And as many of the ideas now gaining ground in this country, regarding colour, adaptability of materials, the non-imitation of natural objects for ornamental purposes, and certain rules to be observed in decorative works, have long been advocated by me, and pro perly belong to the subject of Egypt, I think the Opportunity well suited for expressing my opinion upon them while I rejoice that public attention has been invited to take a proper view of the mode of improving taste. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Literature in Ancient Egypt For many centuries past and until recently the civilised world was accustomed to regard the ancient Egyptians as a people leading a monoto nous and joyless life, unrippled by any passing breeze of ordinary human pleasure, and with minds entirely absorbed in meditations on death or in deep religious and philosophical specula tions. It was indebted for this picture in the first place to the allusions made by Greek authors to the wisdom of the Egyptians, while the austerity of Egyptian plastic representations Of gods and men, and the vital significance ascribed by this people to all rites and worship connected with the dead, pointed to the same conclusion. This view of the matter was confirmed by the tone of the pompous royal inscriptions and almost exclusively religious texts which were the earliest results of the deciphering of Egyptian.
