Book excerpt: A Portrait of Patriots and Pioneers of Sevier County recognizes over one hundred patriots who fought for our country's independence during the Revolutionary War and later called Sevier County home. At the end of the war, they wanted to settle down and raise a family in a place filled with possibilities. Many fought with John Sevier at the Battle of Boyd's Creek and witnessed firsthand what this area offered: an abundance of tillable land, rivers, streams, wild game and timber. These tough, brave men came here to fulfill their dreams of a better life; an area that was still Indian Territory, with no form of government. They fought the Indians, built cabins, schools, libraries, roads, ferries, mills, and blacksmith shops, and in a very short period of time; they established the County of Sevier and the City of Sevierville. These patriots deserve to be recognized and remembered for their sacrifices, struggles, hard work, and determination. Most of them lived the rest of their lives in these hills and valleys, but a few moved on in their search of another dream. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, I'm proud that three of these patriots are my ancestors. It is my desire that this book will be used to assist others in their search for a Revolutionary War patriot or patriots who can be added to their family tree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Sevier County rests in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The area is home to the small communities of Foxfire Mountain, Pittman Center, Jones Cove, Richardson’s Cove, Locust Ridge, and Pearl Valley. Foxfire Mountain is best known today for the adventure park and agri-tourist destination brought to life by the Postlewaite family, yet it also boasts a colorful history that includes Benjamin Owens, a judge notorious for hanging convicts from an oak tree on his property. Locust Ridge is the birthplace of country music legend Dolly Parton, and it has been reported that her father compensated the attending physician who delivered Dolly with a bag of cornmeal. Pittman Center, originally a Cherokee hunting ground, is now the largest community in this portion of the county. Strangely, the town is named for Dr. Eli Pittman of New York, who assisted local minister John Burnett with fundraising to build a school to serve the area. Pittman Center is now a favorite destination for those enjoying the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 120 years after the White Caps terrorized Sevier County in East Tennessee, longtime residents still wont talk about the lawless band of vigilantes. But veteran journalist Robert Wilson shines a spotlight on the group with this detailed history. Relying on a primary source--The White Caps: A History of the Organization in Sevier County, distributed in 1899 by the publisher of the City Directory of Knoxville--as well as his own research, he presents the most complete account to date of why the White Caps were so feared. Wilson has retrieved details from multiple sources and uncovered shocking details about the dark, faceless members who would disguise themselves with a full-body covering of white fabric with holes cut for the eyes. Though the description may summon images of the Ku Klux Klan, the White Caps focused their wrath on what they perceived as immoral behavior--although some of their activity targeted blacks and Jews, among others. However, what started out as a fairly mild enforcement of Victorian values in an isolated, God-fearing community became much, much more. Find out how far the group went in The Eyes of Midnight.
