Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Otego This little book is the result of the past four summers work in searching old records, consulting books and articles that bear upon local history and talking with those who, by age or interest, are authorities. An endeavor has been made, by fair search and impartial judgment, to bring together data of local interest, particularly such that exist only in men's memory. It has been impossible, in the time at my disposal, to gather all the facts that may be found recorded. To name all the occupants, or even the first settlers, of every farm would be an unprofitable and probably an impossible task. Moreover, it must not be forgotten that many of the early settlers were very transient. A few explanations of the text may be needed. The terms "above" and "below," or "upper" and "lower," are used to locate places in reference to the center of the village, and do not refer to the river or the creek. The facts about the churches have been taken chiefly from Hurd's History of Otsego County. I cannot vouch for the truth of the legends and the stories. It has been necessary, as well as interesting, to gather a great deal of the genealogy of the families of this town. This is at the disposal of any one desiring it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Early History of New Zealand: Settlement of Otago To him it has long seemed that many old events, to which he can add fresh incidents, should be retold, and that others which have never been told, or that have long passed into the limbo of oblivion, should be recorded. To this congenial task he has set himself in this volume and in one or two to follow. In selecting the subject for this volume there is undoubtedly a want of order; history earlier still should rightly have had the precedence. But the approaching jubilee of the Otago Province, with the incident that therein the author has passed the best and happiest of his days, determined the selection and vindi cates his choice. When we first heard of Mr. Ross's intention of writing this book, we had the feeling that he was committing the mistake of writing balf-a-century too early. As a rule history cannot be written effectively in the midst of events which it aims at chronicling. We have changed our mind, however, since perusing the book; and we now feel that the author has supplied a present demand. The book shows great research the information is admirably arranged; the style is lively, and the tone throughout is kindly. Mr. Ross has interspersed with his narrative graphic descriptions of the mountain and lake scenery of the interior of our province.-the New Zealand Presbyterian. A most readable and valuable record. - Dunedin Evening Star. Full of information pleasantly given. - 0tago Daily Times. The whole story as told by Mr. Ross is an extremely interest ing and instructive one. Clutha Leader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Opera House is probably the finest to be found in any town of this size. A Municipal building is now being built, at a cost of which provides accommodations for the fire department, municipal offices, and is a decided ornament to the town. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Otakou: Early Days in and About Otago Harbour From earliest days the province of Otago has been recognised as one of the outstanding agricultural areas of New Zealand. On the western coast of this province are mountains covered with virgin bush yielding large quantities of timber. East of these mountains lies the plain of Central Otago, bounded on the south and south-east by ranges of high hills. In this sheltered position is to be found most of the sheep grazing area from which, every year, the greater part of Otago's wool and frozen mutton is sent for export. The lower slopes of the hills likewise provide sheep-grazing land for the farmer. To the east of the Central Otago district lies the Maniototo (the Field of Blood) Plain, to the south the Tokomairiro Plain and, a few miles from Dunedin, the Taieri Plain. To export her wool, frozen meat, gold, and timber, Otago is not well supplied with seaports. Beautiful, deep sounds abound on the west coast, but, as the approach is barred by ranges of high hills, as harbours these sounds are useless. The one good outlet of the province is the Otago Harbour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of New Zealand: Being a Series of Lectures Delivered Before the Otago Institute; Also a Lecturette on the Maoris of the South Island Cook spent nearly a month here, visiting many of the de lightful bays and coves which abound in this neighbourhood, and whose scenery at this day gives so much pleasure to the traveller who passes through those magnificent labyrinthic windings traversed by the Union Company's steamer on the passage from Nelson to Picton. Here, too, Cook pays a tribute which has so often since been paid by other travellers to the songsters of the New Zealand forests. He says, In the morning we were awakened by the signing of the birds* the number was incredible, and they seemed to strain their throats in emulation of each other. The wild melody was infinitely superior to anything we had ever heard of the same kind it seemed to be like small bells exquisitely tuned. We found that the birds here always began to sing about two hours after midnight, and continuing their music until sunrise, were, like our nightingales, silent during the rest of the day. The principal contributors to this delightful concert are known to us as the tui or parson bird, and the mocking or bell bird, whose songs, alas, are, as the years go by, more and more faintly heard in our bush. Here Cook gained for the first time indisputable knowledge of the practice of cannibalism, which he characterizes as being a horrid custom of the inhabitants. One of the Indians bit and gnawed a bone which Mr. Banks had taken up, drawing it through his mouth, and showing by signs that it had afforded him a delicious repast. This knowledge, as I shall presently explain, was to be of great use and benefit to those who, more than two ages later, were to colonize the New Zealand shores.
