Book Synopsis Medicine by Design by : Annmarie Adams
Download or read book Medicine by Design written by Annmarie Adams and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of medicine, hospitals are usually seen as passive reflections of advances in medical knowledge and technology. In Medicine by Design, Annmarie Adams challenges these assumptions, examining how hospital design influenced the development of twentieth-century medicine and demonstrating the importance of these specialized buildings in the history of architecture. At the center of this work is Montreal’s landmark Royal Victoria Hospital, built in 1893. Drawing on a wide range of visual and textual sources, Adams uses the “Royal Vic”—along with other hospitals built or modified over the next fifty years—to explore critical issues in architecture and medicine: the role of gender and class in both fields, the transformation of patients into consumers, the introduction of new medical concepts and technologies, and the use of domestic architecture and regionally inspired imagery to soften the jarring impact of high-tech medicine. Identifying the roles played by architects in medical history and those played by patients, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals in the design of hospitals, Adams also links architectural spaces to everyday hospital activities, from meal preparation to the ways in which patients entered the hospital and awaited treatment. Methodologically and conceptually innovative, Medicine by Design makes a significant contribution to the histories of both architectural and medical practices in the twentieth century. Annmarie Adams is William C. Macdonald Professor of Architecture at McGill University and the author of Architecture in the Family Way: Doctors, Houses, and Women, 1870–1900 and coauthor of Designing Women: Gender and the Architectural Profession.
Book Synopsis Walking London's Medical History Second Edition by : Nick Black
Download or read book Walking London's Medical History Second Edition written by Nick Black and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highly Commended, BMA Medical Book Awards 2013 The history of health care is complex, confusing, and contested. It involves more than just the creation of hospitals and dispensaries, infirmaries, and health centers. There are also royal colleges, trades unions, medical schools, nurses’ homes, coroners’ courts, nursing sisterhoods, ambulance stations, patients’ organizations, and medical missions. Usually, to enhance our understanding we sit and read books, or, nowadays, surf the Internet. But it’s more fun to go out, visit the buildings where events unfolded and transport yourself back in time. The story of how health care has developed from medieval times to the present day is told through seven walks in central London, each with a key theme, such as: Competition between the church, crown, and city for control Changing fortunes of particular districts Radical reform between 1840 and 1880 Individual creativity and entrepreneurship Hospitals’ unavoidable choice between merger or migration Transformation of health care trades into professions Development of primary care The book takes as much interest in one of the six ambulance stations build in 1915 by the London County Council as it does in the grandest teaching hospital. Although some important buildings have been destroyed, and others are threatened, many remain. The walks aim to help preserve our legacy as, increasingly, former health care buildings are converted into hotels, offices, homes, and shops. Awareness of their original functions is in danger of being lost. The book also aims to increase our understanding of the current challenges we face in trying to improve health care. For there are many lessons to be learnt from the past. Packed full of curious and surprising facts about medicine and beautifully illustrated with maps, photographs, and images, this is the perfect guide book for anyone with a passion for urban walks, the history of London, and, of course, medicine.

Book Synopsis A History of Britain's Hospitals by : G. Barry Carruthers
Download or read book A History of Britain's Hospitals written by G. Barry Carruthers and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hospital superbugs are nothing new. For centuries patients were more likely to die from an infection picked up in hospital than from their original disease. Indeed, hospitals used to be called 'gateways of death'. Massaging league tables by concentrating on minor operations? Not a recent innovation, either. At one time, hospitals refused to admit patients likely to die, and never attempted major surgery." "Barry and Lesley Carruthers provide many such startling parallels in their fascinating look at the development of Britain's hospitals, from a Roman field hospital to the keyhole surgery of today. There are also wonderful stories of individual dedication, such as the GP who found a girl dying in a London street and took her to three hospitals - all of which refused to admit her as she did not have the necessary governor's letter - so he founded what become know as the 'Free Hospital'." "Divided into chapters on such vital topics as mental hospitals, nursing, and the National Health Service, this history celebrates not only medical and logistical advances, but also the individual contributions of the men and women who worked to provide an accessible hospital service for all."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Aging in the Past by : David I. Kertzer
Download or read book Aging in the Past written by David I. Kertzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to improved food, medicine, and living conditions, the average age of the population is increasing throughout the modern industrialized world. Yet, despite the recent upsurge of scholarly interest in the lives of older people and the blossoming of historical demography, little historical demographic attention has been paid to the lives of the elderly. A landmark volume, Aging in the Past marks the emergence of the historical demographic study of aging. Following a masterly explication of the new field by Peter Laslett, leading scholars in family history and historical demography offer new research results and fresh analyses that greatly increase our understanding of aging, historically and across cultures. Focusing primarily on post-Industrial Europe and the United States, they explore a range of issues under the broad topics of living arrangements, widowhood, and retirement and mortality. This important work provides a much-needed historical perspective on and suggests possible alternative solutions to the problems of the aged. Contributors: George Alter, Rudolf Andorka, Allen C. Goodman, Myron P. Gutmann, Michael R. Haines, E. A. Hammel, Tamara K. Hareven, Nancy Karweit, David I. Kertzer, Peter Laslett, Andrejs Plakans, Roger L. Download or read book Reproduction written by Nick Hopwood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 1387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From contraception to cloning and pregnancy to populations, reproduction presents urgent challenges today. This field-defining history synthesizes a vast amount of scholarship to take the long view. Spanning from antiquity to the present day, the book focuses on the Mediterranean, western Europe, North America and their empires. It combines history of science, technology and medicine with social, cultural and demographic accounts. Ranging from the most intimate experiences to planetary policy, it tells new stories and revises received ideas. An international team of scholars asks how modern 'reproduction' - an abstract process of perpetuating living organisms - replaced the old 'generation' - the active making of humans and beasts, plants and even minerals. Striking illustrations invite readers to explore artefacts, from an ancient Egyptian fertility figurine to the announcement of the first test-tube baby. Authoritative and accessible, Reproduction offers students and non-specialists an essential starting point and sets fresh agendas for research.
