Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Missouri Missouri has had a h1story of unusual interest. But unfortunately Missourians do not know the history of their own State as they should. This is due largely to the fact that not enough books of a more or less popular nature have been written on this subject. At present the only books available that cover the whole field of Mis souri history are designed for use as texts in the ele mentary schools of the State, such as those by Rader, Williams, and Viles. The more standard works, such as those by Carr and Switzler, are either out of date or out of print. There are a number of special works dealing with different periods or subjects in Missouri history, but they are more or less expensive and hence will never have a very' wide circulation. Under these circumstances a new manual of Missouri history seems to be greatly needed, and it is in response to such a need that this book has been written and offered to the reading public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Missouri The early inhabitants of Missouri were a peculiar people. First of all were the Indians. When they settled there, no one knows. Next came the French, then the Spaniards, and lastly the Americans. The last named were mostly from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Nearly all the American settlers in Missouri were the descendants of pioneers who had grown accustomed to the trying scenes of forest life. They were a rigidly honest people. No locks were on their doors, and they had no need of any. As they were dependent on each other for protection, what belonged to one was freely loaned to his neighbor. If a pioneer wanted to borrow his neighbor's ax, and did not find the man at home, he took the ax without asking, and returned it when done with it. The early Missourians were rude and uncultured, but unselfish and brave. Stories of them, and of the people who preceded and followed them, are both entertaining and instructive. They serve to explain many curious names, customs, and laws, which to a person unfamiliar with the people must remain a mystery. Book Synopsis History of Missouri by : Clarence Henry McClure
Download or read book History of Missouri written by Clarence Henry McClure and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Missouri: A Text Book of State History for Use in Elementary Schools Much has been said and written recently concerning the teaching of Citizenship. History has long been recognized as a subject which has great value for this purpose. The desire to make loyal citizens of our boys and girls gave History a place in our public schools soon after the Civil War. For some reason the results obtained in the teaching of History have not been as satisfactory from the standpoint of good citizenship as is desirable. The author believes that one of the chief reasons for the failure to realize these practical results is to be found in both the method and material used in our teaching of History. Good citizenship consists largely in the ability of an individual to adjust himself to the community environment in which he lives. Any community is what it is because of its past. To understand a community it is necessary to know its History. But our Historians usually begin with Columbus, a native of a foreign country and of a different age, and they seldom get closer to the environment of the child than Massachusetts. The well established pedagogical principle of proceeding from the known to the unknown is ignored. A noted educator has said, "We should begin with the boy, where he is, while he is there." State History furnishes the material which connects the life of the child and the local community with events of historical importance in our national life. Not a few of these men had vivid recollections of events occurring in the County from the very earliest days down to the time when they took delight in giving information to the writer, Who was invariably a receptive listener. Download or read book History and Government of Missouri (Classic Reprint) written by Jere Taylor Muir and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Government of Missouri The following chapters aim to give in reasonable compass the essential facts in the history and government of the state of Missouri. The author is fully aware that much of interest in the history of the state has been omitted and that many of the details of the state and local government have not been described. He has constantly kept in mind, however, the needs of those for whom this work is written, and also the limited amount of time in the public school curriculum that can be allotted to Missouri history and civics, and it is his hope that the book will fill its place acceptably in the work of the seventh and eighth grades or in the first year of the high school. The real teacher will not be satisfied with the necessarily brief discussions in the text, but will seek all available material with which to vitalize the subject and increase the interest of the pupils. Throughout the work the teacher should appeal as often as possible to the actual knowledge and experience of the class. In the confirmation or illustration of the various topics this appeal will always prove to be very stimulating and the results in most instances will be quite satisfactory.
