Book excerpt: Hampshire’s County Hospital was founded in 1736 by Alured Clarke, in Colebrook Street in what had been a house belonging to the nuns of St Mary’s Abbey. The Hospital moved in 1759 to a new building in Parchment Street, designed at least in part by John Woods the younger. There it stayed for almost a century, during which time its medical staff gained recognition as skilled physicians and surgeons. By the time Jane Austen came to be treated during her final illness it already had a considerable reputation as a teaching hospital.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Hampshire: Including the Isle of Wight The history of every county has been affected to some extent by its natural features, and this is especially the case in respect to that county whose history is sketched in this volume. The County of Southampton or Hampshire has been much favoured by nature, and its natural advantages must have commended it to its early inhabitants, whose connection with it are traced in these pages. The surface of the county consists largely of well-wooded plains or valleys, and dry chalk hills which stretch across it in a broad belt, having on the north and south of them two other broad areas of clays, and sandy loams. Hampshire is, and always has been, a woodland county, and its forests have been much concerned with its history. Its natural features have had a great influence on the growth of its forests, for oak grows on the clay lands in all parts of the county, while beech flourishes on the loamy soils lying upon the slopes of the chalk hills, and upon similar soils in the north and the south, and those areas which contain more sand than clay can be distinguished by a growth of pines and firs. Book Synopsis Creative Historical Thinking by : Michael Douma
Download or read book Creative Historical Thinking written by Michael Douma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative Historical Thinking offers innovative approaches to thinking and writing about history. Author Michael J. Douma makes the case that history should be recognized as a subject intimately related to individual experience and positions its practice as an inherently creative endeavor. Douma describes the nature of creativity in historical thought, illustrates his points with case studies and examples. He asserts history’s position as a collective and community-building exercise and argues for the importance of metaphor and other creative tools in communicating about history with people who may view the past in fundamentally different ways. A practical guide and an inspiring affirmation of the personal and communal value of history, Creative Historical Thinking has much to offer to both current and aspiring historians.
