This book was released on 1989-05-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from the eighth to the fifth centuries B.C. was one of extraordinary creativity in the Greek-speaking world. Poetry was a public and popular medium, and its production was closely related to developments in contemporary society. At the time when the city states were acquiring their distinctive institutions epic found the greatest of all its exponents in Homer, and lyric poetry for both solo and choral performance became a genre which attracted poets of the first rank, writers of the quality of Sappho, Alcaeus and Pindar, whose influence on later literature was to be profound. This volume covers the epic tradition, the didactic poems of Hesiod and his imitators, and the wide-ranging work of the iambic, elegiac and lyric poets of what is loosely called the archaic age. The contributors make use of recent papyrus finds (particularly in the case of Archilochus and Stesichorus) to fill out the picture of a cosmopolitan and highly sophisticated literary culture which had not yet found its intellectual centre in Athens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work provides a continuous account of the whole of Greek literature in one volume. Particularly useful for the student are the careful summaries of the works dealt with and the judicious accounts of scholarly controversy on the more hotly debated points. First published in German in 1958, the book was extensively rewritten for the second edition in 1963, from which this translation, which was originally published by Methuen in 1966, was made. This new reprint makes it available once again to student and anyone with an interest in this formative period of literary history. From publisher's description.

Download or read book History of Greek Literature written by Albrecht Dihle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most up-to-date history of Greek literature from its Homeric origins to the age of Augustus. Greek literary production throughout this period of some eight centuries is embedded in its historical and social context, and Professor Dihle sees this literature as a historical phenomenon, a particular mode of linguistic communication, with its specific forms developing both in an organic way and in response to the changing world around. In this it differs from conventional humanist approaches to Greek and Latin literature which analyse the works as objects of timeless value independent of any historical setting or purpose. This magisterial survey by one of the leading European authorities on classical literature will establish itself, as it already has in Germany, as the standard account of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Greek Literature To read and re-read the scanty remains now left to us of the Literature of Ancient Greece, is a pleasant and not a laborious task; nor is that task greatly increased by the inclusion of the 'Scholia' or ancient commentaries. But modern scholarship has been prolific in the making of books; and as regards this department of my subject, I must frankly accept the verdict passed by a German critic upon a historian of vastly wider erudition than mine, and confess that I 'stand helpless before the mass of my material.' To be more precise, I believe that in the domain of Epic, Lyric, and Tragic Poetry, I am fairly familiar with the researches of recent years; and I have endeavoured to read the more celebrated books on Prose and Comic control; but I hope that comparatively few articles of importance in the last twenty volumes of the Hermes, the Rheinisches Museum, the Philologus, and the English Classical Journals, have escaped my consideration. More than this I have but rarely attempted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Ancient Greek Literature is an exceptional and comprehensive textbook of Europe's oldest civilization. The book covers the ancient Greek literature from the earliest texts until the time of the Byzantine Empire. It begins with the earliest surviving works of ancient Greek literature, the two epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey, set in an idealized archaic past today identified as having some relation to the Mycenaean era. Homer's epics as well as the Homeric Hymns and the two poems of Hesiod, Theogony and Works and Days, comprised the major foundations of the Greek literary tradition that would continue into the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. All above mentioned periods are presented in this book with a special emphasise on every particularly literary genre of ancient Greek literature - epic poetry, lyric poetry, drama, historiography and philosophy. Contents Homer Lesser Homeric Poems; Hesiod; Orpheus The Descendants of Homer, Hesiod, and Orpheus The Song The Beginnings of Prose Herodotus Philosophic and Political Literature to the Death of Socrates Thucydides The Drama Aeschylus Sophocles Euripides Comedy Plato Xenophon The 'Orators' Demosthenes and His Contemporaries The Later Literature, Alexandrian and Roman
Book Synopsis A Literary History of Greece by : Robert Flacelière
Download or read book A Literary History of Greece written by Robert Flacelière and published by AldineTransaction. This book was released on 2008 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several good histories of Greek literature of various shapes and sizes, but the purpose of this book is not simply to consider the literature of ancient Greece as an isolated subject, treating each of the literary modes--epic, lyric, drama, history, philosophy, and rhetoric--in terms of its own evolution. Instead, Robert Flacelière provides a Greek history that deals with all the important works of Hellenic literature that are still of interest to contemporary readers; and he does this in chronological order with an accurate account of their historical background. Flacelière follows the history of Greece down through the centuries as the writer records it. He describes the political atmosphere in the nation and the advances in the other arts that influenced literature. The author understands Sappho's rhapsodies; girlish love in the context of the acceptance of homosexuality in that era. He sympathizes with the unrequited passion of the penniless Archilochos. He appreciates Pindar's pacifist tendencies, Herodotus' upright insistence on truth, and Euripides' doubts about the existence of the gods. For the classical centuries, so rich in talent and genius, the author follows the successive generations systematically so as to distinguish the special features of each, what it owes to the preceding generation and how it paves the way for the next. Since this is a literary history, attention is mainly focused on the writers and their works, but by displaying these in their political, social, artistic and scientific setting, Flacelière gives a better understanding of the production and significance of these wonderful achievements of the human spirit. Due to the wide range of material presented, A Literary History of Greece can be used as a reference book as well as for enjoyment reading.

Book Synopsis Greek Literature for the Modern Reader by : H. C. Baldry
Download or read book Greek Literature for the Modern Reader written by H. C. Baldry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1951, this book was written to provide an introduction to ancient Greek literature for the general reader. All quotations are translated into English and a lack of knowledge regarding the ancient world is taken for granted. In spite of its introductory status, the text is notable for having a self-consciously personal approach. As the author states in the preface, 'My aim was not to achieve completeness or objectivity (which, if it were possible, would be very dull) but merely to write a history of Greek literature as I see it.' This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in ancient Greek literature and literary criticism.
