Chapter I. CHRONICLES OF THE SCHOOL. T is perhaps hardly a cause for wonder that no History of Felsted School has yet been written. The materials for such a work are by no means large, and the result of much search must often be nothing more than a stray fact or a dubious inference. Yet the work is worth doing, and, imperfect as the present attempt must necessarily be, it may be hoped that from this beginning further search may supply the materials for a more adequate account. Felsted School is directly an outcome of the Reformation. The earliest purpose of the founder is set forth in a deed dated April 26th, in the first and second year of Philip and Mary. In that year, 1554, the changes that followed the death of King Edward had made it possible for those who sympathised with. doctrines that he had discountenanced to express their piety in the forms that were pleasing to them. Prayers for the dead were no longer held illegal, and there was a revival of that spirit which had found its most B notable expression more than a century before in Archbishop Chichele's foundation of All Souls' College in Oxford. Sir Richard Rich, Knight, Lord Rich of Little Leez, had so far acceded to the measures of the Reformation as to act as Chancellor of the Court of Augmentations, and enrich himself with the spoil of abbey and priory. From 1547 to 1552 he had held the Great Seal, and had acquiesced in changes which he had perhaps regarded as for the time inevitable. With the reforms of doctrine and ritual which had commended themselves to Cranmer he had never agreed, and to this disagreement it was now possible for him to give an outward form.
