Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 3: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament (1259) To the Commencement of the Continental War (1793), Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; 1401-1582 TH E most valuable facts contained in this volume are derived from the records preserved in the Oxford and Cambridge Colleges. There are a few farm accounts of New College, which continued the practice of agriculture on account of the corporation for about thirty-five years after the commencement of the fifteenth century but for the most part the record 1s that of expenditure, not of production. The accounts, however, of the Oxford Col leges are not precise in detail. It appears that the annual roll, signed by the bursars, was merely an abstract of a more detailed account, which, having served its imme diate purpose, was cast aside or destroyed. Thus the accounts of Magdalen College, Oxford, contain one year, I Ric. III, in which the original method of stating the balances is represented, and a large volume of rough entries from which numerous, and those very valuable, facts have been derived. But as a rule the entries are disappointing. The Oxford Colleges, which at an early date abandoned baking and brewing on their own account and dealt directly with tradesmen, seldom give quanti ties. They are also careless in keeping accounts, and sometimes the head of the College reproves the bursars for neglect of duty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributing an original dimension to the significant body of published scholarship on women in 16th-century England, this study examines the largest corpus of women’s private writings available to historians: their wills. In these, female voices speak out, commenting on their daily lives, on identity, gender, status, familial relationships and social engagement. Wills show women to have been active participants in a civil society, well aware of their personal authority and potential influence, whose committed actions during life and charitable strategies after death could and did impact the health of that society. From an intensive analysis of more than 1200 wills, this pioneering work focuses on women from all parts of the country and all strata of society, revealing an entire population of articulate, opportunistic, and capable individuals who found the spaces between the lines of the law and used those spaces to achieve personal goals. Author Susan James demonstrates how wills describe strategies for end-of-life care, create platforms of remembrance, and offer insights into the myriad occupational endeavors in which women were engaged. James illuminates how these documents were not simply instruments of bequest and inheritance, but were statements of power and control, catalogues of material culture from which we are able to gauge a woman’s understanding of her own reality and the context that formed her environment. Wills were tools and the way in which women wielded these tools offers new ways to look at England in the 16th century and reveals the seminal role women played in its development.

Units of measurement are of vital importance in every civilization through history. Since the early ages, man has through necessity devised various measures to assist him in everyday life. They have enabled and continue to enable us to trade in commonly and equitably understood amounts, and to investigate, understand, and control the chemical, physical, and biological processes of the natural world. The encyclopeadia will be of use not only to historians of science and technology, but also to economic and social historians and should be in every major academic and national library as standard reference work on the topic.
