Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Sketch of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, Wilmington, N. C Silence falls on the little assembly as the meeting is opened with a devout prayer in the name of Jesus. All feel the presence of the Lord and the certainty of His promise to guide and counsel His own in all their ways. The prayer ended, the purpose of the meet ing is stated in clear and convincing manner. When at length the question is asked, How many of you are now ready to organize and support a Lutheran congregation '7 they rise one by one and place their names on record. Fifty-eight names are enrolled. How mani fest the interest and enthusiasm of these fifty eight! They decide to seek a suitable lot, to build a church thereon and to call a pastor as soon as possible. Thus the first city missionary enterprise of the North Carolina Synod came into being and the foundation of the St. Paul's of to day was laid. Fifty years have passed since that day and now as a result of these resolutions a large congregation assembles in a beautiful build ing. Let us retain and cherish the mental picture of that first meeting. Let us be grate ful to God for the noble purpose He gave those men and women and for the manifold blessings He bestowed upon their labors. In order that the present generation may not be ignorant of the annals of St. Paul's, we venture upon a chronicle of its career. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Drake has skillfully woven together the various strands of the Appalachian experience into a sweeping whole. Touching upon folk traditions, health care, the environment, higher education, the role of blacks and women, and much more, Drake offers a compelling social history of a unique American region. The Appalachian region, extending from Alabama in the South up to the Allegheny highlands of Pennsylvania, has historically been characterized by its largely rural populations, rich natural resources that have fueled industry in other parts of the country, and the strong and wild, undeveloped land. The rugged geography of the region allowed Native American societies, especially the Cherokee, to flourish. Early white settlers tended to favor a self-sufficient approach to farming, contrary to the land grabbing and plantation building going on elsewhere in the South. The growth of a market economy and competition from other agricultural areas of the country sparked an economic decline of the region's rural population at least as early as 1830. The Civil War and the sometimes hostile legislation of Reconstruction made life even more difficult for rural Appalachians. Recent history of the region is marked by the corporate exploitation of resources. Regional oil, gas, and coal had attracted some industry even before the Civil War, but the postwar years saw an immense expansion of American industry, nearly all of which relied heavily on Appalachian fossil fuels, particularly coal. What was initially a boon to the region eventually brought financial disaster to many mountain people as unsafe working conditions and strip mining ravaged the land and its inhabitants. A History of Appalachia also examines pockets of urbanization in Appalachia. Chemical, textile, and other industries have encouraged the development of urban areas. At the same time, radio, television, and the internet provide residents direct links to cultures from all over the world. The author looks at the process of urbanization as it belies commonly held notions about the region's rural character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1964 Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction Anti-Intellectualism in American Life is a book which throws light on many features of the American character. Its concern is not merely to portray the scorners of intellect in American life, but to say something about what the intellectual is, and can be, as a force in a democratic society. "As Mr. Hofstadter unfolds the fascinating story, it is no crude battle of eggheads and fatheads. It is a rich, complex, shifting picture of the life of the mind in a society dominated by the ideal of practical success." —Robert Peel in the Christian Science Monitor
Book Synopsis Westward into Kentucky by : Chester Raymond Young
Download or read book Westward into Kentucky written by Chester Raymond Young and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his youth Daniel Trabue (1760--1840) served as a Virginia soldier in the Revolutionary War. After three years of service on the Kentucky frontier, he returned home to participate as a sutler in the Yorktown campaign. Following the war he settled in the Piedmont, but by 1785 his yearning to return westward led him to take his family to Kentucky, where they settled for a few years in the upper Green River country. He recorded his narrative in 1827, in the town of Columbia, of which he was a founder. A keen observer of people and events, Trabue captures experiences of everyday life in both the Piedmont and frontier Kentucky. His notes on the settling of Kentucky touch on many important moments in the opening of the Bluegrass region.
