Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to develop atomic-vapor absorption cells to be used as blocking filters for a high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL). Experimental assessment of the proposed new high-spectral-resolution lidar technique for backscatter ratio and atmospheric temperature measurements in the troposhere is presented. The feasibility of the proposed concept has been demonstrated by laboratory measurements using a cw tunable laser with an atomic vapor filter constructed for this purpose. The status of current laboratory experiment with pulsed system suggests that field measurement of backscatterer ratio can be made to 1% accuracy. A factor of 10 improvement in the accuracy in determining the molecular attenuation factor resulting from the atomic vapor filter is needed for field temperature measurement with a 1 K accuracy. Keywords: Lidar, High-spectral-resolution, Measurements, Aerosol/molecule backscatter ratio, and Tropospheric temperature. (RH).

Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found in their 2007 report that aerosol radiative forcing contributed larger uncertainties to estimates affecting future climate change than any other radiative forcing factor. Lidar is a tool with which this uncertainty can be reduced, increasing our understanding of the impact of aerosols on climate change. Lidar, or laser radar, is a monostatic active remote sensing technique used to measure aerosols and particulates in the atmosphere, with accuracies comparable to in-situ measurements (Russell 2002). High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) systems use a narrow band filter to spectrally separate Doppler broadened aerosol and molecular back-scattered return signals, which allows for range resolved profiles of aerosol extinction and backscatter. The narrow band filter is a key component, for which two novel approaches are currently being used: NASA Langley Research Center has implemented a wide-angle Michelson interferometer in the second version of their airborne HSRL, and Montana State University is using a spherical Fabry-Perot interferometer in a ground based HSRL. In this research, a comprehensive comparative analysis of these two interferometric filters is performed, the result of which is a methodology for the design of narrow band filters for HSRL systems. The techniques presented identify the critical components and analyze the performance of each filter based on the spectral and angular properties, as well as the efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lidar is a remote sensing technique that employs laser beams to produce a high-resolution, four-dimensional probe, with important applications in atmospheric science. Suitable as a detailed reference or an advanced textbook for interdisciplinary courses, this book discusses the underlying principles of light-scattering theory and describes widely used lidar systems in current research, exploring how they can be employed effectively for atmospheric profiling. This self-contained text provides a solid grounding in the essential physics of light-matter interactions and the fundamentals of atmospheric lidars through a discussion of the principles that govern light-matter interactions and an exploration of both historical and recent scientific developments in lidar technology. This is an essential resource for physicists, optical engineers and other researchers in atmospheric science and remote sensing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Wisconsin High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) has been recently redesigned for operation in an electronics semitrailer van. The HSRL can now be deployed in support of field experiments. This paper presents initial observations with the new configuration along with an analysis of measurement accuracy. New measurement capabilities have been added. These include: observation of the signal variation with angular field of view, and observation of depolarization in all data channels. Depolarization measurements have been implemented by transmitting orthogonal linear polarizations on alternate laser pulses. Pulses are transmitted at 250[micro]s intervals such that the lidar observes the same ensemble of particles for both polarizations. Orthogonal polarizations are measured with a single detector per channel. Since the optical components and detector gains are identical for the two polarizations the measured depolarization ratios are independent of these factors and the system delivers very precise depolarizations. A new data channel with a computer controlled aperture allows measurements of multiple scattering as a function of receiver field of view. Since the field of view variation is dependent on the size of the scattering particles it is expected that this will allow remote measurements of cloud particle size. Other technical improvements in the new system include active control of spectrometer temperatures, greatly increased mechanical stability, an increased receiver aperture, injection of calibration signals into the signal profiles to allow continuous monitoring of system calibration drifts, and extensive computer control of system operations.

Book excerpt: The HSRL provided calibrated vertical profiles of optical depth, backscatter cross section and depoloarization at a wavelength of 532 nm. Profiles were acquired at 2.5 second intervals with 7.5 meter resolution. Profiles extended from an altitude of 100 m to 30 km in clear air. The lidar penetrated to a maximum optical depth of ~ 4 under cloudy conditions. Our data contributed directly to the aims of the M-PACE experiment, providing calibrated optical depth and optical backscatter measurements which were not available from any other instrument.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first year of this grant has been devoted to the design and construction of an upgraded version of the University of Wisconsin High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL). The new system incorporates additional data channels to measure depolarization and multiple scattering in the lidar return. Schematic diagrams describing the new configurations are attached to this report. Increases in optical efficiency and receiver aperture, coupled with improvements in the stiffness and the thermal stability of the mechanical system are expected to significantly improve the performance of the instrument. Most components of the system are nearly completed and system integration is about to begin. The HSRL is committed to participate in the NASA FIRE cirrus experiment during November and December of this year. Our progress is completing HSRL subsystems is outlined in the following paragraphs. 3 figs.
