Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Medical Diagnosis for Students The ability to make an accurate and, at the same time, rapid diagnosis is, in a measure. A gin, but in much larger de gree the result of careful training and experience. Students are prone to look upon the diagnoses of their preceptors or clinical instructors as made by Intuition. But the accurate diagnosis is made as the result of observation and reasoning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Diagnosis: A Handbook for Students and Practitioners of Medicine It is common to find that at the bedside of a patient the observer fails to apply the knowledge he actually possesses; it does not occur to him to follow up the inquiry by the necessary methods; although he may be perfectly familiar with them, he may not think of them at the time, or at least he may fail to recognize their importance for the case on hand. This Manual, however, does not aim at supplying an easy and certain method of making a diagnosis. It would be strange, indeed, if any book could teach a student to do that which the' most accomplished physician is often unable to complete to his own satisfaction. But one well-trained in clinical observation, if unable to make a diagnosis, can at least examine his patient thoroughly, and it is in this respect that he has an immense advantage: the case is thus put in a fair way for a diagnosis whenever this becomes possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Diagnosis: Special Diagnosis of Internal Medicine; A Handbook for Physicians and Students Wheiv a student of medicine in Germany, the Diagnosis of Leube always impressed itself upon the editor as a plain, practical work which described disease and the various differential points in such a lucid man ner that it has always been his wish to give to the English-reading pro fessionthe advantages of this storehouse of bedside knowledge. The fact that a medical work has appeared in its sixth edition in the course of twelve years is sufficient evidence of its value. The main features of this text-book consist in the explicit difierential diagnoses. If it is true that rational treatment depends upon the accuracy of diagnosis, the fundamen tal requirements of the therapist will be diagnosis in its broadest sense; not only the ability to recognise the true nature of the affection, but the knowledge of its course, complications and eventual termination. 'the author has been signally successful in presenting some of the most difficult problems of the diagnosis of Internal Diseases in a clear, concise man ner, never attempting the impossible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Medical Diagnosis for Students and Physicians IN the preface to the fifth edition, it was stated that the original purpose of the work was to make it an exponent of objective medicine and to point out the way to acquire precision in diagnosis. In revising the work of my father, Dr. J. H. Musser, I have carefully endeavored to keep this purpose before me, preserving the splendid store of clinical material in the book and bringing it abreast of our knowledge of today. While I have carefully retained the plan and methods pursued in preparing the last edition, the enormous advances in medical science during the past eight years made it imperative that the book should be practically rewritten. This necessity rendered it possible, by re arrangement and by judicious condensation, to make the present edition of a more convenient size, while it is believed that none of those factors to which the great popularity of the earlier editions was due, have been sacrificed. In less than two years this little book has reached its third edition, and al though not intended as a complete work on medical diagnosis, it has met the requirements of the student, by affording him an easy method of learning the most characteristic symptoms of diseases and their diagnosis, and the busy practitioner by furnishing him differential diagnosis tables of all diseases liable to be confounded one with another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Diagnosis Medicine is year by year receiving additional help, more especially in diagnosis, from the ancillary sciences. In the ordinary text-books on medicine space does not permit of adequate reference to a number of laboratory methods - whether bacteriological, chemical or physical - side by side with sufficient clinical and pathological detail. Our publishers informed us of their opinion that a book, in which all the clinical information and the more ordinary laboratory details, necessary for the purpose of making a scientific diagnosis in medical cases, were arranged in a concise and accessible form, was constantly sought for both by the student and the practitioner. At their request we have made an attempt in the following pages to meet this demand. We have availed ourselves freely of existing text-books and current medical literature but do not feel that an extensive bibliography would serve any useful purpose in a book of this size and scope. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine: A Text-Book for Practitioners and Students, With Special Reference to Diagnosis and Treatment I have no apology to make for preparing this book. I have long contemplated it, and have finished it after several years' labor. It has taken some time, because it represents almost purely personal work, which has been frequently interrupted. It does not pretend to be based on my personal practice only. In these days of specialized work this would be impossible, though with most of even the rare forms of disease in every section I have had some experience. To fill in the gaps of my own knowledge I have used that of others, but have always sought to make suitable acknowledgment to the proper source, and if this has not been done in any case, it has been a matter of oversight. I had not, at the outset, expected to illustrate the work, but, as it progressed, a certain number of illustrations seemed necessary, not only to explain the text, but also, in a few instances, to render clearer the treatment described. Thus the number of charts and other drawings has grown to nearly a hundred, all of which, it is hoped, will be found useful. In expectation of the ultimate adoption of the metric system for the measuring of doses, these have been indicated throughout the book in the metric and English measures. Acknowledgment is due to Dr. Joseph P. Walsh and Mr. M. A. Morin for suggestions after reading the text, to Dr. William Schleif for material assistance in Section XV, and to my son, Dr. T. Mellor Tyson, for assistance throughout the work and especially in preparing the index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
