Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Chemical Technology The several Editions of Professor Rudolf Wagner's "Handbuch der Chemischen Technologie" bave succeeded each other so rapidly that no apology is needed in offering a translation to the public. There is little to be said as to the arrangement. Improvements in Technological processes that have appeared since the publication of the Eighth German Edition have been added during translation. Only when necessary have Foreign weights and measures been stated in English equivalents; where the point has been one of comparison, the weights have been left unaltered. The Metrical System has in some cases been of great service in avoiding the repetition of tiresome distinctions between English and Prussian grain weights, English and Bavarian foot measure, &c. The formula have been subjected to careful revision, and are molecular throughout. Indeed, every care has been taken to merit the confidence of the manufacturer and of the student. Under the head of Metallurgical Chemistry, the latest methods of preparing Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper, Copper Salts, Lead and Tin and their Salts, Bismuth, Zinc, Zinc Salts, Cadmium, Antimony, Arsenic, Mercury, Platinum, Silver, Gold, Man-ganates, Aluminum, and Magnesium, are described. The various applications of the Voltaic Current to Electro-Metallurgy follow under this division. The Preparation of Potash and Soda Salts, the Manufacture of Sulphuric Acid, and the Recovery of Sulphur from Soda-waste, of course occupy prominent places in the consideration of chemical manufactures. It is difficult to over-estimate the mercantile value of Mond's process, as well as the many new and important applications of Bisulphide of Carbon. The Manufacture of Soap will be found to include much detail. The Technology of Glass, Stoneware, Limes, and Mortars, will present much of interest to the builder and engineer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Chemical Engineering, Vol. 2 of 2: Prepared by a Staff of Specialists Before proceeding to outline briefly the various heating methods employed in bringing about high temperature melting or reactions, we shall refer in a few words to the subject Of refractories for high-melting-point containers. High-temperature Refractories - Our choice of materials is very limited especially for temperature work in excess of 2,000c. Of the various refractories readily obtainable, lime, magnesia and alumina are the most serviceable basic ones at temperatures up to about The purer these oxides the higher their melting points. In laboratory tests thoria crucibles have given very satis factory results at temperatures as high as 2,400c. Alth'ough pure tungsten melts at crucibles made from this metal, unless constructed with very heavy walls, show marked tendency to collapse at about 2,800c. In those cases where carbon does not readily combine with the substance to be heated, commercially pure graphite crucibles or supports are serviceable up to tempera tures Of about 3,000c. The life Of these graphite crucibles at these elevated temperatures is however comparatively short since the amorphous carbon binder. Used in the manufacture Of the crucible rapidly loses its binding qualities as the graphitization temperature is approached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Technology, Vol. 2: Or Chemistry in Its Applications to Arts and Manufactures; Lighting This volume of Chemical Technology deals with the special application of Fuel to the purpose of producing Light, irrespective of the heat developed at the same time, and as there are many ways in which this is effected, it was necessary to fix on some order of sequence in which the various Sections should be arranged. Something in the nature of historical or chronological succession has been adopted as a matter of convenience, but this relates only to the order in which.the various methods of obtaining light came into use, for it is evident that as the means of illumination referred to, in their higher developments at all events, are every one of them still in use, there is no reason to suppose that no further improvements will be made or that they will any of them become obsolete. In the first Section, that on Oils and Fats, for which we are indebted to Mr. W. Y. Dent, only those which are used for lighting are considered, thus excluding the very large and important class of oils and fats employed for lubrication, or as vehicles in painting or varnish making, or as material for other chemical products. Although the general outline of the technology of these substances remains essentially the same as it was in early times, yet the great progress which has been made in recent years in the machinery used in their extraction and preparation will doubtless continue, resulting in saving both in cost and in labour, besides improving the purity of the product. Further important advances have been made in the matter of testing these materials, whereby not only can the quality of the product be ascertained, but the presence and nature of foreign substances can be detected, whether they occur as accidental impurities or have been added for the purpose of fraudulent adulteration. Owing to the highly complex nature of the compounds themselves, their very close resemblance one to another, and the ease with which they are decomposed by chemical agents, the tests applicable to them are more or less uncertain in their operation, much depending on an exact attainment of similar conditions and on the experience of the operator. Still, as shown in the section relating to this subject, much has been done to render these tests precise and comparable when made by different observers. In the Stearins Industry, described by Mr. J. McArthur, there is a somewhat similar condition of affairs, but the entire subject is comparatively modem, involving definite chemical processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Chemistry, Theoretical, Practical, and Technical The Authors, after having received their chemical education in my laboratory, officiated for some years as my assistants, and I have had ample opportunities of witnessing their talents for imparting informa tion, and smoothing the path of the Student, in every department of analysis. The present volume is a synopsis of their experience in laboratory teaching; it gives the necessary instruction in chemical manipulation, a concise account of general chemistry, as far as it is involved in the Operations of the laboratory, and lastly, qualitative and quantitative analysis. The plan adopted in the instructions for analysis is essentially that which was first introduced by Baron Liebig, and which, modified in accordance with the progress of science, and with the special requirements of the English student, I have daily practised myself, for the last eight years, in this laboratory.
