Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book to the Primates, Vol. 1 I have not attempted to write a complete synonymy of the species of Monkeys. The literature is scattered over many, Often obscure, periodicals, and without seeing the actual speci mens described by some of the older writers, it would be easy to introduce a great deal of confusion into the synonymy. I have, therefore, only attempted to give the principal references. I must express my obligation to Dr. Gunther, the Keeper of the Zoological Department in the British Museum, for the facilities of study afforded to me in that institution. To Mr. Oldfield Thomas I am likewise greatly indebted for much assistance, and for many a kindly hint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book to the Primates, Vol. 2 I have little to add to the remarks given in the first volume of this Hand-book. I may refer, however, to the interest which attaches to the study of the extinct forms of life, in relation to those which exist at the present day. Although I have endeavoured, to the best of my ability, to present to the student as complete a review of the species of Monkeys known to us at the present time, I am well aware that there is an enormous amount of work to be done before our know ledge of the Primates can be said to be complete. There is a natural repugnance to collecting specimens of Monkeys on the part of Sportsmen. To shoot one feels like killing a sort of relation, and even our best collectors, who thoroughly under stood the necessity of obtaining specimens in the interests of science, speak with a feeling of pain of the human-like distress which a wounded Monkey exhibits; and it is, there fore, difficult to induce travellers to shoot animals Wth offer so much of a counterfeit presentment to human beings. Book excerpt: "[...]trade away on the European side; it is, therefore, not impossible that the "Apes of the Rock" may have thus been introduced. This is the only African (or European) species of the genus. Habits.—This Monkey has been known to science for many centuries. It is now certain, as M. Frederick Cuvier remarks in his "History of Mammals," thanks to the researches of M. de Blainville upon the Monkey dissected by Galen, that the Pithecus of Aristotle was our Magot, as we know of no other species of Macaque without a tail. The Barbary Macaques, when on the ground, invariably walk on their four legs, but in an uneasy and clumsy manner compared with their motions when climbing; they are far more at home in trees or rocks, where they climb with amazing rapidity. They live chiefly on fruits and leaves, feeding themselves with their hands, and smelling everything they are uncertain about,[...]".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory Primate Handbook deals with the proper care and handling, treatment, and transportation of nonhuman primates to be used as research subjects in a laboratory environment. It considers the protection of human and animal health, identification, procurement, and husbandry, as well as compliance with federal regulations. Organized into 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of living primates and their classification, followed by procurement and production for biomedical research purposes. It then discusses housing and care of primates; preventive medicine and public health programs aimed at minimizing the hazards that may arise from diseases transmissible between nonhuman primates and man; and restraint and special techniques, including anesthetics and pre-anesthetics. The book also covers nutrition for primates and prevention of nutritional diseases, as well as generalized infectious diseases; parasites that cause disease in primates; and collection of physiological data on primates. Finally, the book looks at federal regulations and policies governing the humane care and treatment of nonhuman primates used in research. This book will benefit biomedical researchers involved in laboratory studies of nonhuman primates.

This is the first resource in forty years, which reviews the latest writings and research dealing with prosimians. There are no other books available that deal with primate ecology and the behavior of free-ranging primates. This represents the most in-depth coverage, initially characterizing these animals as they exist in their least disturbed state, then comparing behavior in disturbed situations and captivity in order to gain a better understanding of primate behavior and primate communities. Each major taxonomic group is covered, including information on locomotion and habitat, diet, activity cycles, predation, social organization, communication, reproduction and infant development. Primate Ecology is well illustrated with over 130 figures and plates.
