Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand Book to the Birds of Great Britain, Vol. 3 I have nothing to add to the prefatory remarks in the pre vious volumes, and am only too pleased to find that I have no heterodox views to defend, nor any criticisms to reply to. It only remains, therefore, to thank my kind friends who have helped me in the preparation of the present volume. It has been a somewhat tedious task, as the general habits of Wading Birds are so much alike, that it is difficult to find anything to say about them that has not been excellently done by the late Mr. Henry Seebohm or by Mr. Howard Saunders. Many of the descriptions of the Waders are taken from my re cent work on the group in the Catalogue of Birds, and I hope that these will be found instructive to the numbers of ornitholo gists who are interested in shore-birds and Waders generally. I have also endeavoured to quote works on natural history not familiarly known in this country and the notes on the habits of some of the North American species, taken from the writings of Mr. E. W. Nelson and Mr. D. G. Elliot, will be found to be of some interest, and the latter's recent book on North American Shore-birds has frequently been laid under con tribution in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book to the Birds of Great Britain, Vol. 1 Every ornithologist who, in the course of his career, may be called upon to write a book upon British Birds, will always find this to be one of the most interesting, but certainly one of the most difficult, tasks which he has ever undertaken. He is sure to discover that not only is the path well-worn, but that the work of his many predecessors has been so well done that little chance of originality remains to him. No country in the world has had more excellent books written about its birds than Great Britain, whether we consider illustrated works, such as those of Selby and Gould, or the attractive "Coloured Figures of British Birds," now being published by Lord Lil-ford; or the many exhaustive books on the life-histories of our native birds, such as those of Macgillivray, Yarrell, and others; or the excellent works on eggs published by Hewitson and Seebohm. Of the two leading publications on the subject, viz., those of Macgillivray and Yarrell, the palm for scientific merit must be given to that of the Scotch naturalist, and the increasing value of his works, day by day and year by year, testifies to an appreciation of his labour which would have gladdened and cheered him in his work, had such regard been bestowed upon him during his lifetime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 3: With Coloured Illustrations of Their Eggs We may therefore leave the question of the classification of birds to the decision of the future, and, whilst recognizing its supreme import ance, regard it as a subject somewhat outside the scope of our present inquiry. The progress of ornithology in Britain may be conveniently studied in periods - the first comprising a century, the second half a century, and the third, fourth, and fifth each a quarter of a century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of British Birds, Vol. 3 of 4 It is not within my province to consider the advisability of publishing under the honoured name of Yarrell a work which must necessarily be, to a great extent, rewritten but my portion of the task, once accepted, has been performed to the best of my ability. Where practicable, the original phraseology has been followed, with due modifications; the opening words of the sentences have frequently been pre served, as 'landmarks' for possessors of former Editions; and extracts from the authors and correspondents quoted by Yarrell have been retained, subject to considerations of space, relevancy, and accuracy. This work of selection and adapta tion has entailed severe labour, and, as a matter of fact, the original articles on the species added to the British list since the publication of the Third Edition, are those which have given the least trouble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 1 of 3 From the lateness of the period, in reference to the printing of these volumes, at which the occurrence of two examples of this Species in Ireland became known to me, I was only able to introduce a figure and a short notice on a single leaf in its place among the Eagles. The fur ther particulars here inserted may prove acceptable. This Eagle, very similar in its appearance to our well known Golden Eagle, but almost one-third smaller in size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ready Guide to British Birds As the result of long experience the author has cc me to the conclusion that there is a need for a guide to British Birds at once more simple and more ready than any yet published. After various experiments the plan adopted in this book was decided upon, viz. First to arrange the descriptions so that in the case of each bird the same characteristics (colour, ight, haunts, &c.) always follow one another in the same order and then to divide the descriptions into vertical columns, so that the Observer can, by looking down any one column, run through the different descriptions of any particular feature until he comes to one which corresponds tty what he has observed.
