Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Music: A Handbook and Guide for Students The present book is the outgrowth of a fragmentary syllabus for classes that was issued in 1897. It is meant to be distinctly a book of reference for students rather than a literary or critical survey of a few salient aspects of the subject, or a specialist's report of original research. Aiming at a certain degree of encyclopædic fullness, it brings together facts and conclusions from a great variety of sources. Much labor has been expended in grouping the material in such a way as to give a systematic impression of the enormous field in view. In many cases somewhat full lists and summaries of details are given, partly to provide means for easy reference, partly to suggest how multifarious are the facts, and sometimes to indicate upon what sort of data are based the general statements that are offered. At every point an effort is made to emphasize the leading tendencies or movements of musical advance, referring to particular styles and composers as illustrations. It was originally intended to include fairly exhaustive bibliographies and a great amount of material was collected; but the magnitude of this branch of the subject precluded its presentation in this volume. In connection with each period in the history, however, a brief statement is made concerning the musical literature of the time, but without any attempt at completeness. This is not in any sense a history of instruments, but some hints are given of the range and interest of the topic, both by statements in the text and by illustrations of selected specimens. The latter are drawn from the well-known collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, to the custodians of which the heartiest thanks are due for multiplied courtesies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of the History of Music: With an Annotated Guide to Music Literature This book is based upon the plan and method that are followed in the courses of lectures on the history and criticism of music given in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The only rational aim of such instruction is to aid the student to examine, think, and conclude for himself. The material for study is found in musical compositions and the critical and historical work of recognized authorities. The time has gone by when the representations of a single book or a single author can meet the demands of an intelligent curiosity. In every department of inquiry in which books are employed it is now taken for granted that afa'fny authorities must be examined, and that the teacher's work consists largely in providing abstracts, topics, references, and similar guides. Such assistance the present author endeavors to furnish to those who are interested in the history of musical art. Each entry consists of a bibliography of some 3-20 titles and an essay in which these titles are evaluated, by an expert in the field, in light of the history of writing and scholarship on the given topic. The more than 500 entries include not just writings on major composers in music history but also the genres in which they worked (from early chant to rock and roll) and topics important to the various disciplines of music scholarship (from aesthetics to gay/lesbian musicology).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: THIS little book is the result of the author's own efforts to interest his pupils in the History of Music and to give them an outline of that history, presenting its salient facts in a clearer perspective than he could find in any text-book he had tried to use. Since the book was begun, the excellent history of Dr. Langhans has appeared in English, but the translation is so clumsy as not to preclude the necessity of some other text-book for English-speaking students. There still remains the need of an exhaustive history to follow such an outline as is here attempted. Those who read German can find it in the admirable histories of Von Dommer and Ambros; but the counterparts of these works are not yet to be found in English. Chappell's history, so far as it has gone, is interesting, and instructive to discriminating readers; but its author seems too opinionated and too unbalanced to be thoroughly trusted as a guide, Rowbotham is valuable to those who can devote attention to such details as the minute study of Greek rhythms and other fine points of ancient music, and will be interesting even to those who can read it but superficially. But the second of his two large volumes already published only brings us through the music of the Greek tragedy. The histories of Burney and Hawkins are not to be forgotten, but they are, of course, antiquated. Macfarren's, Ritter's, Bouavia Hunt's, Rockstro's and others are outlines only. The most important auxiliary to the English speaking student of musical history is Grove's "Dictionary of Music and Musicians," by far the most complete encyclopedia yet published in English, a library in itself. It ought to be accessible to every student of music There is a short "Dictionary of Music and Musicians" appended to W. S. B. Mathews' "How to Understand Music," which will be found very handy for reference. The book itself is valuable reading, and a second volume, now in preparation, will cover important ground in the history of music. Naumann's History is valuable for its illustrations. Many of these are also to be found in Mendel's "Conversations-lexicon," the most extensive musical encyclopedia for those who read German. A smaller, but most valuable German encyclopedia is Dr. Hugo Riemann's "Musikalisches Conversations-Lexikon." Among special histories Niemann's "Studien zur Geschichte der Notenschrift," is perhaps the most important contribution to our knowledge made in recent years. It ought to be translated into clear and readable English. Dr. Riemann is doubtless the greatest living musical theorist and no student of music can afford to ignore his works. Unfortunately none of them have been translated except his lecture on "The Nature of Harmony" and his "Comparative Piano School." In biography we are better off. The series entitled "The Great Musicians," edited by Franz Hueffer is strongly to be recommended. Its American publishers are Scribner and Welford, New York. Karasowski's "Life of Chopin" is now to be had in English. This is the standard biography of Chopin. Liszt's "Chopin" is interesting but is, in some respects, inaccurate and misleading Schumann's Essays are well-known and so is Wasielwski's "Life of Schumann." It is matter of pride to Americans that the standard life of Beethoven is the production of an American, A. W. Thayer. Unfortunately, it has thus far appeared only in German. The works connected with Mendelssohn's name are numerous and valuable; his letters are especially charming; "Music and Morals" and "My Musical Memories," by the Rev. H. K. Harvies, are excellent reading But I will not further extend a list which could hardly be made exhaustive. The student who makes his own choice of the books here enumerated will know how to discriminate as to his further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LENARD C. BOWIE, DMA ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MUSIC, RETIRED THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA JACKSONVILLE , FLORIDA Dr. Lenard C. Bowie has developed an enviable reputation as a consummate musician. He is a classical trumpet artist, accomplished band director, effective music administrator, skilled lecturer and publi shed author. As an author, Bowie's expertise in several fields of endeavor has been documented through the following subjects, as published in the professional music journals indicated: "Solving Problems of Young Trumpet Players, " published in the Music Educators National Journal (December, J979) , a critical review of "Black University Marching Bands in the 80's." published by The Marching Band (January, 198 1), and the Proceedings of an Informal Research Conference whose mission was to document the extent to which African American music courses were offered in Florida's Public Schools was published by the Florida Music Educator (June, 2002). As an undergraduate, Bowie was plagued bymany questions concerning the absence of formal instruction in the music of his people, especially when considering the fact that there were only two authentic types of American music -- that of the American Indians and that of African Americans, with African American Music being the most important of the two. Bowie's search for answers to his probing questions began when he enrolled in Professor Willie Ruffs course in Black Music as a graduate student at Yale University in 1974. This course opened Bowie's eyes, ears and mind to many of his here-to-fore unanswered questions; including the extent to which African music traditions are practiced in African American Music today, and the impact that African American Music has made on the social, political, economic, and religious climates of modern American Society. After graduating from Yale with a Master of Musical Arts Degree in 1976, Bowie struck out on a mission to enlarge on what he had learned about African American Music. This mission brought him in contact with a wealth of information through independent study of numerous publications and documentaries; lectures, festivals, concerts; and personal contacts with scholars who were, or have become, major players in the research, dissemination, performance and composition of African American Music. Some of these scholars include former colleagues Dr.Oily W. Wilson, composer and Chair of Composition at UCLA , Berkeley, Samuel Floyd, Founder and Director of the Center for Black Music Research, found at Fisk University, now housed at ColumbiaCollege,Chicago,Dr. AaronHorne,AfricanAmericanMusic Biographer and Dean of Fine Arts, Winston Salem Unive rsity, North Caro lina, Aramentha Adams - Hummings, Founder and Director ofthe Gateways Music Festival , initiated at the North Carolina School of the Arts, now housed at the East man School of Music in Rochester,New York, Operatic Tenor and Music Educator, the late Dr. William A, Brown. Others include Dr. Portia Maultsby, Professor of Music at Indiana University, Dr. Dena Epstein, Retired Music Librarian, Archival Researcher and Author, Chicago, Dr. Rene Boyer-White, Professor of Music Education, College-Conservatory of Music, The University of Cincinnati, and Dr. John Smith, Dean of Fine Arts, The Univers ity of South Florida at Tampa. During the first of Dr. Bowie's two terms as Music Department Chair at The University of North Florida, he was afforded an opportunity to apply and distribute his long sought know ledge. The opportunity came in the form ofa Mill ion Dollar Endowment from the Koger Company to develop programs of study in American Music. The response of the faculty to the endowmentwas to institute two programs: a Jazz Studies Program and a program in African American Music. The Jazz Studies Program has become nationally recognized for outstanding achievements in jazz theory, history and performance. The latter program , designed and developed by Bowie, was chall
