Book excerpt: Southern Arizona and northern Sonora provide one of the most beautiful and dangerous landscape in the desert southwest. As described in this colorful and well-illustrated text, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is full of splendid geologic features. Along Ajo Mountain Drive volcanic rocks rise high above alluvial fans that display excellent examples of desert pavement and desert varnish. Join Bezy, Gutmann and Haxel as they explore the volcanic terrain of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. As one of the youngest volcanic fields in western North America, the Pinacate¿s are home to hundreds of cinder cones, the Sierra Pinacate shield volcano, maar craters and tuff rings. The presence of black basalt lava flows evokes an otherworldly moonscape. The enumerated index map will assist the first time visitor in tracking down the most representative vent types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Triassic period 225 million years ago, the Petrified Forest National Park of northern Arizona was a lowland drained by meandering streams carrying sediment to a nearby sea. Rapid burial of trees in oxygen-poor sands promoted petrification as silica-rich groundwater replaced the woody material; hence the petrified wood for which the Park is renowned. This text provides a brief description of the geology and geologic features ¿ slump blocks, basaltic agglomerate, syncline, sand dunes, badlands, and more ¿ that make the Park and environs a geologic wonderland.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report describes and provides background for the accompanying preliminary geologic map of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks compiled on the special topographic map of the parks at a scale of 1:125,000. This geologic map of the parks is one-half the scale of the 12 published geological quadrangle maps (scale 1:62,500) that cover more khan half of the parks area. Therefore it was necessary to simplify cartographic detail and to portray a minimum number of lithologic units. .... This open file map, and the explanatory text, is intended as a general assessment of the regional geology of the parks area, as a resource for planning further geologic research in the parks, and as a guide for the park interpretive staff in the geologic framework and geologic history of the parks. It is also an initial step in the preparation of a final map to accompany a popularized report on the geology of the parks."--Page 2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a simple account of the natural history of Saguaro National Monument. It is intended to help you understand the relationships between land, climate, plants, wild animals, and man in the environment of a hot desert. While it includes brief profiles of many representative species, it is not intended to serve as a guide to the monument. It does indicate where the several distinctive natural communities exist, and when and where to look for certain plants and animals. For identification purposes, you will need field guides. The present edition is my revision of the 1957 book by Natt Dodge, then naturalist for the Southwest Region of the National Park Service. The first five and the last two chapters are essentially new; the central chapters on plants and animals remain largely as written in the first edition. The authors wish to thank former and present members of the monument staff for their help and companionship, in both field and office. We are particularly grateful to Chief Naturalist Harold T. Coss, Jr., who devoted much time and effort to obtaining many of the photographs and, with Park Biologist Warren F. Steenbergh, gave the manuscript a thorough scrutiny. The cooperation and hospitality of Superintendent Harold R. Jones have created the best possible climate for work on the revised edition. National Park Service geologist Robert H. Rose contributed in very great measure to the geological content. Finally, our thanks go to the many students of desert life on whose knowledge this book has been built, and to monument visitors who ask questions—for their concern gives hope for better relations between man and nature. —N.S.

For those ascending Catalina Highway to the summit of Mt. Lemmon, this guide points out major geographic features, roadsite rock outcrops, and discusses how geologic processes, still operating today, shape and reshape the mountain¿s flanks and summit.
