Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Porcelain Painting Whilst nearly every branch of Pictorial and Decorative art has been made the subject of numerous hand-books, it is believed that no manual of instructions in the art of paint ing on Pottery and Porcelain has hitherto appeared. Under its present facilitated conditions, the art, whether cultivated for pleasure or profit, will be found to afford a highly interesting occupation. The practice of Ceramic painting does not include the varied manipulative processes employed by artists who work upon canvas or paper. There is comparatively little to be taught, some acquaint ance with drawing and colouring being presupposed in the learner. Painting in enamel colour is more particularly recommended. The surface of the glazed ware is always practically identical in texture, and colours of every hue are available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The China Collector: A Guide to the Porcelain of the English Factories His book has been written to en able the enthusiastic collector of China, even after he has passed through his apprenticeship, and acquired a certain amount of experience, to form a correct judgment of that branch of ceramics embraced under the designation of Old English Porcelain. Though not primarily intended for the expert, I have endeavoured to set down in concise form the data which are essential to all who submit our English Porcelains to a close and critical study. Not only has a careful investigation been made of the actual wares, but also of the standard authors on the subject, past and present: wherever their experience might add to the lucidity of the text, their works have been consulted, and every source has been acknowledged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Painting on Glass and Porcelain and Enamel Painting Although in the subjoined historical particulars the data handed down to us have been adhered to, we consider it, nevertheless, important to make thereon a few preliminary observations, which, indeed, involuntarily thrust themselves upon one's mind when visiting large museums. In the Egyptian collections in these museums we find a large number of objects presenting an indubitable proof that the Egyptians who lived 4000 years ago were already masters of the art of producing white and coloured glass and of glass smelting. On this account it is not improbable that they also understood how to apply certain permanent colours to individual portions of glass surfaces, thereby laying the foundation of the technical industry of glass painting. However, the art (in the true sense of the word) of paint ing on glass is very young, Since it was only in recent times that it was brought to the state in which we now see it, although the commencement of the art decidedly dates back as far as the first centuries of our era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Porcelain, Vol. 2 In the sixteenth century porcelain was so highly esteemed in Europe that many pieces were mounted in silver, and it is reasonable to suppose that the best specimens were selected for this honour. N ow, except, perhaps, where historical value attaches, as in the case of the Trenchard and Warham bowls, the mountings, as samples of early silver work, are of more value than the china they were originally designed to protect and ornament. The reason for this being that much finer porcelain has since come to hand; while to give value, artistic merit is necessary, as well as mere antiquity; and in the former qualification the Ming productions have been greatly distanced by the Tsing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture The interest of Porcelain is perennial, and though book succeeds book, the subject remains unexhausted. The aim of this little book is to supply the collector and student of porcelain, as well as the general reader, with a clear and connected account of the various kinds of porcelain made in Asia and Europe. It has taken me more years than I like to count to arrive at the ideas set down in the following pages, and I hope that, as a result of my labours in sifting, weighing, selecting, and arranging, the knowledge gained from so many diverse sources, others may be saved a great deal of unnecessary trouble. This is in no sense a technical treatise, yet it is based on a practical experience in many branches of the Potter's Art, which has, I trust, enabled me to exhibit certain aspects of the subject in a way that will be new to the bulk of my readers. Throughout the work I have been careful to explain how the artistic qualities of the various porcelains have been influenced by the nature of the materials and processes used in different countries; the information being of such a character as will enable a collector to find the scientific explanation of the differences which an artist feels. Many difficulties have to be faced in a work necessarily so compressed as this. In the first place, it is impossible to keep the treatment accurately in scale. Naturally, perhaps, in an English book the records of the English factories occupy more space than the artistic merit of their productions would warrant; while German porcelain makes so little appeal to our English tastes, that a German might, not unreasonably, complain that the factories of his country had received less attention than they deserve. Others may think that Japanese porcelain has been somewhat slighted, but I have honestly tried to give a picture that should represent as truly as possible, within the prescribed limits, the development of every important kind of porcelain known. It is, perhaps, necessary to say a word in explanation of the attention given to the Letters of Pere d'Entrecolles.
