Book excerpt: Religion posits one characteristic as an absolute: faith. Compared to faith, all other social distinctions and sources of conflict are insignificant. The New Testament says: 'We are all equal in the sight of God'. To be sure, this equality applies only to those who acknowledge God's existence. What this means is that alongside the abolition of class and nation within the community of believers, religion introduces a new fundamental distinction into the world the distinction between the right kind of believers and the wrong kind. Thus overtly or tacitly, religion brings with it the demonization of believers in other faiths. The central question that will decide the continued existence of humanity is this: How can we conceive of a type of inter-religious tolerance in which loving one's neighbor does not imply war to the death, a type of tolerance whose goal is not truth but peace? Is what we are experiencing at present a regression of monotheistic religion to a polytheism of the religious spirit under the heading of 'a God of one's own'? In Western societies, where the autonomy of the individual has been internalized, individual human beings tend to feel increasingly at liberty to tell themselves little faith stories that fit their own lives to appoint 'Gods of their own'. However, this God of their own is no longer the one and only God who presides over salvation by seizing control of history and empowering his followers to be intolerant and use naked force.

Book Synopsis God on Your Own by : Joseph Dispenza
Download or read book God on Your Own written by Joseph Dispenza and published by Wiley + ORM. This book was released on 2010-12-08 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this spiritual self-help memoir, a former Roman Catholic monk recounts his journey away from religion toward his own personal spirituality. After spending eight years in a monastery, Joseph Dispenza walked away from his life as a monk—and the religion of his youth—in search of a different kind of spiritual path. Outside the confines of organized religion, Dispenza was able to create a spiritual life that gives direction and meaning to all he does and all he is. God on Your Own is a book for anyone who has left (or is thinking of leaving) organized religion but wants to continue on a spiritual path. Dispenza, a noted author and retreat leader, provides a spiritual road map for those who want to make the transition from conventional religion toward a richer and more satisfying direct relationship with the Source, without rules, dogmas, or doctrines. Throughout the book, Dispenza offers wise, compassionate guidance, speaking as one seeker to another. He has made this journey himself, gleaning spiritual truth from across traditions and practices.

Contrasting these two visions of life, Alan Noble invites us into a better understanding of who we are and to whom we belong.
Book Synopsis A Religion of One's Own by : Thomas Moore
Download or read book A Religion of One's Own written by Thomas Moore and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author and trusted spiritual adviser offers a follow-up to his classic Care of the Soul. Something essential is missing from modern life. Many who’ve turned away from religious institutions—and others who have lived wholly without religion—hunger for more than what contemporary secular life has to offer but are reluctant to follow organized religion’s strict and often inflexible path to spirituality. In A Religion of One’s Own, bestselling author and former monk Thomas Moore explores the myriad possibilities of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion. Two decades ago, Moore’s Care of the Soul touched a chord with millions of readers yearning to integrate spirituality into their everyday lives. In A Religion of One’s Own, Moore expands on the topics he first explored shortly after leaving the monastery. He recounts the benefits of contemplative living that he learned during his twelve years as a monk but also the more original and imaginative spirituality that he later developed and embraced in his secular life. Here, he shares stories of others who are creating their own path: a former football player now on a spiritual quest with the Pueblo Indians, a friend who makes a meditative practice of floral arrangements, and a well-known classical pianist whose audiences sometimes describe having a mystical experience while listening to her performances. Moore weaves their experiences with the wisdom of philosophers, writers, and artists who have rejected materialism and infused their secular lives with transcendence. At a time when so many feel disillusioned with or detached from organized religion yet long for a way to move beyond an exclusively materialistic, rational lifestyle, A Religion of One’s Own points the way to creating an amplified inner life and a world of greater purpose, meaning, and reflection.

Book excerpt: This scripture was revealed through spirit writing in 1181. It traces Wenchangs development through his many transformations culminating in his apotheosis as director of the Wenchang Palace and custodian of the Cinnamon Record that determines mens and womens fates. The god has since assumed a high position in the Taoist pantheon, has been introduced into the school system and Confucian temples, and now controls the all-important civil service examinations in China. The text translated here provides a unique window into the religious world of Traditional China. Numerous anecdotes of good- and evil-doers reveal the ethical dilemmas facing men and women of the time, from social questions like infanticide and discrimination against women to more purely religious issues such as how evil gods are punished and how Chinas divergent religious traditions can be reconciled.

Download or read book My Beliefs, Thoughts and Conclusions written by David Heckman and published by David Heckman. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A skeptic's logical explanations of empirical data on existence, god, morality and other interconnective ideas. Ever since my college philosophy days, I have always dubbed my approach as 'skeptistic thinking.' This is my comprehensive summation and overview of my philosophical, metaphysical, existential and theological journey over the last 40+ years. This short book is designed to create discussions by looking at the existence of reality, the nature of (G)god and our moral obligations within this world. It is a logical approach that seeks to explain those things through empirical observations, logical deductions and basic reasoning skills. It is designed to be understandable from both an entry level into a philosophical and theological discussions as well as still being detailed enough that seasoned readers will be able to create there own new discussions. I do not claim any divine knowledge or hidden secrets to life. I use logic and reason to look at as many areas of study as possible to find common threads in of truth that transcends nature, religious practices and societal norms. It is through a systematic overview of all studies simultaneously that we are able to logically deduce the fundamental principles of reality, our existence within it, (G)god and our moral obligations. The purpose of this book is to create discussions and thoughts on topics. It may be a starting point for some, or a point of interest for others already walking their own journey. In either case, I hope it gives you something to think about and explore in your own thoughts and discussions.
