Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Essex Dialect Some years since, when making pedestrian tours through Essex, I was struck with the peculiarity of the dialect, and I noted down many words. Having looked through Mr. Russell Smith's List of Provincial Glossaries for England, and not found one for this county, it occurred to me that a Glossary might be useful, especially as I learned that the dialect was dying out. With this view I consulted several works on the subject, but was not at first rewarded with much success. The Mithri dates of Adelung gives a version of the Lord's Prayer in the dialect of Walden, in Essex, taken from Chamberlayne's Oratio Dominica. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to an Essex Dialect Dictionary Supplement Fall of the leaf (autumn), is now rare in literature, a dialect phrase. Fettle is a dialect or colloquial word. King-cup is a general literary word for certain kinds of ranunculus; we use it only for marsh-marigold. Mercury with us is Good King Henry only; in literature it is also used for Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis) and other plants. Sere, dry, generally, in literature, we use only for wood and vegetation. Spinney I cannot defend; it shall go. Yet Dr. Joseph Wright admits it to The Dialect Dictionary. I shall be glad to hear of any other words whose right can be challenged, and will apply the supreme test, as is done above, of the Oxford Dictionary. Regret is expressed by one or two critics that a phonetic system is lacking. That is due partly to my incompetence - for I am ignorant of phonetics, and perhaps incapable of acquiring a working knowledge of them - but were I ever so skilled, I would have avoided strict scientific treatment, because it would have been incomprehensible to people for whom the book was designed, the general reader. Take the Dialect Dictionary, and see what a complete system of sound analysis would mean. What would the' man in the street' make of ewe for away, ater (after), bali (barley), bvil (boil), bwei (boy) - to say nothing of a squad of other strange symbols which cannot be presented here because they require special type? I have therefore adopted the method of The Concise Oxford Dictionary designed for the general reader, wherein explanatory spellings, when they are needed, are such as fahdher (father), kawf (cough), duv (dove), sahm (psalm), westcul (waistcoat), britshiz (breeches), and so on. Thus, with submission, but with some shadow of justification, to my kindly critics, whose comments I value highly, and find most helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Words and Phrases Pertaining to the Dialect of Cumberland To the southward of this district the words and the mode of pronunciation and expression gradually merge into those of Lancashire; to the northward, into the Scotch; and to the extreme north-east, into the Northumbrian, partaking in some measure of the burr peculiar to parts of that county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Supplement to the Glossary of the Dialect of Cumberland As this Supplement is intended to be used in conjunction with, and not wholly independent of, the previous volume, and to avoid unnecessary repetition, a number Often follows the Headword. In such a case reference must be made to the page in the earlier Glossary whereon will be found the same Headword; then the connexion Of the Old material with new, whether consisting of variants, new localities, or illustrations not previously obtainable, will be made clear; otherwise the additions will at first Sight ap pear to be irrelevant. The corrections and additions to the Preface are also paged (roman numerals), in order that the reader may the more easily make comparison if he Should SO desire. For more than one reason it was thought that a list Of Similes current in the county would be of interest; it will be seen that whilst many are truly dialectal, others are but translations into the vernacular of those in general use. The Proverbial Sayings are quaint, and indicative of the character of the people. I am indebted to Mr. R. W. Moore, mining engineer, for a valuable list of Mining Terms formerly in use in Cumberland, which he has collected whilst preparing the chapter on Coal-mining, for the Victoria History of the county. My hearty thanks are likewise due to all who have verbally and by letter replied to my many inquiries, and who have not spared themselves any trouble to give me of their best. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Dialect and Archaic Words Used in the County of Gloucester I have also found the Glossaries of my fellow-workers in adjoining fields of great assistance in determining the range of words, a matter which I consider to be of very great importance. And in this connection I would say that I have found myself obliged to admit a good many words - in self-defence, so to say - which I should personally have preferred to omit, on the ground that they are words in common usage all over the country, although perhaps not sufficiently polite to find a place in the dictionary. Had I altogether omitted them, it might in the future be supposed that they were not used in this County, and thus a false idea of their range would necessarily arise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to an Essex Dialect Dictionary When a Dialect Dictionary is constructed for a county or a district, the usual plan, I believe, is for a general editor to gather contributions from correspondents representing all parts of the area, and to compile what he gets. Here is one modest contribution for Essex, in advance, representing in a measure the dialect and colloquial speech of a small district. It is the outcome of seventeen years' observation in three contiguous parishes, High Easter, Felsted, and Little Dun-mow, with slight additions from other neighbouring parishes. So far as it goes, the attempt may claim to represent Essex speech proper, the mid-county dialect, which is less tainted with alien forms than the speech of the northern, southern, and western parts, where East Anglian, Kent and London, and Midland dialects intrude. Moreover, my chief gathering ground is a region singularly remote from railways and main roads. For instance, in the parish of High Easter, with nineteen miles of road, there is not a bit of main road. The village is five miles from the nearest railway, and that an insignificant branch line. Railways and main road traffic, beyond a doubt, have made deadly havoc of the vernacular. It is high time that some qualified person took our Essex dialect in hand, seriously and completely; for no dabbling is of any use. The old speech, though it holds on tenaciously enough in corners, is generally shrinking under the influence of the Elementary School and of free intercommunication. It is deplorable that Essex should lack a dialect dictionary. Almost all the other counties appear to have been adequately dealt with. Essex sits forlorn. The two or three glossaries or vocabularies which have appeared from time to time are but scrappy things. Dialect is included in the scheme of the Victoria History of the Counties of England, but the Essex issue stopped some fifteen years ago, and hope of its completion is almost dead.
