Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to emphasize the relationships and cohesion between analytical and numerical techniques, Ordinary Differential Equations in Theory and Practice presents a comprehensive and integrated treatment of both aspects in combination with the modeling of relevant problem classes. This text is uniquely geared to provide enough insight into qualitative aspects of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to offer a thorough account of quantitative methods for approximating solutions numerically, and to acquaint the reader with mathematical modeling, where such ODEs often play a significant role. Although originally published in 1995, the text remains timely and useful to a wide audience. It provides a thorough introduction to ODEs, since it treats not only standard aspects such as existence, uniqueness, stability, one-step methods, multistep methods, and singular perturbations, but also chaotic systems, differential-algebraic systems, and boundary value problems.

Book excerpt: An ideal companion to the new 4th Edition of Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations by Jordan and Smith (OUP, 2007), this text contains over 500 problems and fully-worked solutions in nonlinear differential equations. With 272 figures and diagrams, subjects covered include phase diagrams in the plane, classification of equilibrium points, geometry of the phase plane, perturbation methods, forced oscillations, stability, Mathieu's equation, Liapunov methods, bifurcationsand manifolds, homoclinic bifurcation, and Melnikov's method. The problems are of variable difficulty; some are routine questions, others are longer and expand on concepts discussed in Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations 4th Edition, and in most cases can be adapted for coursework or self-study.Both texts cover a wide variety of applications whilst keeping mathematical prequisites to a minimum making these an ideal resource for students and lecturers in engineering, mathematics and the sciences.

Book excerpt: The book contains seven survey papers about ordinary differential equations. The common feature of all papers consists in the fact that nonlinear equations are focused on. This reflects the situation in modern mathematical modelling - nonlinear mathematical models are more realistic and describe the real world problems more accurately. The implications are that new methods and approaches have to be looked for, developed and adopted in order to understand and solve nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The purpose of this volume is to inform the mathematical community and also other scientists interested in and using the mathematical apparatus of ordinary differential equations, about some of these methods and possible applications.

Book excerpt: This book provides cutting-edge results on the existence of multiple positive periodic solutions of first-order functional differential equations. It demonstrates how the Leggett-Williams fixed-point theorem can be applied to study the existence of two or three positive periodic solutions of functional differential equations with real-world applications, particularly with regard to the Lasota-Wazewska model, the Hematopoiesis model, the Nicholsons Blowflies model, and some models with Allee effects. Many interesting sufficient conditions are given for the dynamics that include nonlinear characteristics exhibited by population models. The last chapter provides results related to the global appeal of solutions to the models considered in the earlier chapters. The techniques used in this book can be easily understood by anyone with a basic knowledge of analysis. This book offers a valuable reference guide for students and researchers in the field of differential equations with applications to biology, ecology, and the environment.

The chosen methods are described in a way that is suitable to those who have some experience with ordinary differential equations. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in the related areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an authoritative, unified overview of the methods and results concerning the global properties of linear differential equations of order n (n>=2). It does not, however, seek to be comprehensive. Rather, it contains a selection of results which richly illustrate the unified approach presented. By making use of recent methods and results from many different areas of mathematics and by introducing several original methods, global solutions of problems previously studied only locally are given. The structure of global transformations is described algebraically, and a new geometrical approach is introduced which leads to global canonical forms suitable for Cartan's moving frame-of-reference method. The theory discussed also provides effective tools for solving some open problems, especially relating to the distribution of zeros of solutions. In addition, the theory of functional equations plays an important role in studying the asymptotic behaviour of solutions. Applications to differential geometry and functional equations are also described. The volume is largely self-contained. This book is for mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and others whose work involves the use of linear differential equations.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of my lecture notes, Functional Differential Equations in the Applied Mathematical Sciences series, many new developments have occurred. As a consequence, it was decided not to make a few corrections and additions for a second edition of those notes, but to present a more compre hensive theory. The present work attempts to consolidate those elements of the theory which have stabilized and also to include recent directions of research. The following chapters were not discussed in my original notes. Chapter 1 is an elementary presentation of linear differential difference equations with constant coefficients of retarded and neutral type. Chapter 4 develops the recent theory of dissipative systems. Chapter 9 is a new chapter on perturbed systems. Chapter 11 is a new presentation incorporating recent results on the existence of periodic solutions of autonomous equations. Chapter 12 is devoted entirely to neutral equations. Chapter 13 gives an introduction to the global and generic theory. There is also an appendix on the location of the zeros of characteristic polynomials. The remainder of the material has been completely revised and updated with the most significant changes occurring in Chapter 3 on the properties of solutions, Chapter 5 on stability, and Chapter lOon behavior near a periodic orbit.

Book excerpt: This book is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students with an interest in the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems. Elementary knowledge is emphasized by the detailed discussions on the fundamental theorems of the Cauchy problem, fixed-point theorems (especially the twist theorems), the principal idea of dynamical systems, the nonlinear oscillation of Duffing's equation, and some special analyses of particular differential equations. It also contains the latest research by the author as an integral part of the book.
