Book excerpt: The workshop organizers had previously identified three pillars that directly influence land and water resources, its policies and institutions at a regional scale. These were: (1) Availability of the resources; (2) Access to the resources; and (3) Achievements that can be obtained through the use of the resources (yields, productivity and income enhancement from these land and water resources). The two-day workshop focused on identifying appropriate research questions that would help improve the livelihoods of the rural poor in these three areas to cope with spatial and temporal variability, and scarcity, of available land and water resources, improve farmers’ access to these resources and ensure their distribution in an equitable manner, and achieve optimal productivity.

Book Synopsis Managing Water on China's Farms by : Jinxia Wang
Download or read book Managing Water on China's Farms written by Jinxia Wang and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Water on China's Farms: Institutions, Policies and the Transformation of Irrigation under Scarcity is a comprehensive and current look at the water shortage problems in China. While China has emerged as a major player in the world economy, water is the most critical factor that limits the country’s further growth. China’s growing water problems also have a large impact worldwide, with public health as well as economic impacts. If China were to rely heavily on food produced outside of China, the massive volume of food imports would raise food prices internationally. This book examines a series of water issues, beginning with a description of the water shortage problems in China, particularly in the northern part of the country. It then looks at the government and farmers' responses and whether past policies have been effective in resolving the water problems. Managing Water on China’s Farms documents the change of existing and new water management institutional forms over time and across provinces throughout northern China, and then assesses the impacts of these changes in the rural sector. Finally, it examines potential solutions that the research has uncovered, answering the question: Who can build the bridge over China’s troubled waters? Using analyses from information collected firsthand in China’s rural villages, the series of surveys covers diverse geographic regions that are representative of north China and includes perspectives from multiple stakeholders such as village leaders, water managers, and farmers. The policy-oriented research and rich analysis in this book make it of interest to both policy makers and researchers with a focus on China water problems. This book can also be used in a Master or Ph.D. level resource economics course. Uses case studies including problem, factors, proposed solutions, and pros and cons of each to facilitate translational learning and application Uses analyses of firsthand data collected from sources of irrigation water, irrigation systems, and water users Covers governance and operation and maintenance (O and M) practices Provides an informative, quantitative, and rigorous analysis of survey results Provides practical and valuable data, including the detailed micro-level data that enables estimating strategies

The book discusses various choices and options – from demand management to supply enhancement, understanding ecological footprints of towns to managing water at a bioregional scale. In doing so, it is vital to address issues of equity and empower local institutions in managing water. The focus for the future must be on building urban resilience by strengthening the adaptive capacities of affected communities while also understanding the limits to adaptation. In Focus – a book series that showcases the latest accomplishments in water research. Each book focuses on a specialist area with papers from top experts in the field. It aims to be a vehicle for in-depth understanding and inspire further conversations in the sector.

Groundwater development for irrigation using deep as well as shallow tubewells has been a key focus in rural development strategies in the terai of Nepal for nearly three decades. Yet, there has been little study of how groundwater is used alone or in conjunction with other sources of water for irrigation and what transformations in governance and production these technology choices relate with.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Groundwater Irrigation in Rice-based Systems in Nepal by : Humnath Bhandari

This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is lifeblood of agriculture. Access to irrigation water determines food security and farm income. Lack of irrigation poses serious constraint to increase agricultural production. Well-controlled year-round irrigation water supply can increase agricultural production and contribute to rural prosperity and economic transformation. Groundwater irrigation is the best alternative source of irrigation that can harness the benefits of available resources at the minimum possible cost and in a short period of time. Promotion of irrigation water markets is one way to enhance sustainable management of groundwater resources. This book provides information about the economics of groundwater irrigation and functioning of irrigation water markets in Nepal. It presents important research findings about factors determining ownership of shallow tubewell, factors determining development of irrigation water markets; costs and benefits of shallow tubewell irrigation; and impact of groundwater irrigation on rice production, food security, and overall livelihoods. These research findings will be useful for policymakers, development practitioners, and donors, and researchers.
