Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Girl of the Plains Country' is one of Alice MacGowan's finest works. It is the story of a family who arrives by stagecoach to small town Mesquite. They have traveled all the way from New York - a little girl with dark curls, a woman wearing silk stockings and heels, and a man in a flannel shirt and jeans, carrying his young baby. They are the Van Brunt family. It is a sixty-mile trip to the Three Sorrows Ranch, and during that time, Hank Pearsall gets a chance to be acquainted with the family, especially young Hilda Van Brunt. She decides to call him 'Uncle Hank'. The family try to fit into their new surroundings on the plains, as they fix up beds, and cook steaks on the fire, and eat canned food. It is a much different experience for the family, than living in Denver, or New York. It is a place filled with ponies and horses, ranchers, and all sorts of fantastic things that Hilda had never experienced before. She quickly settles into her new life, eager to learn what she can about life on the ranch, as well as playing with her dolls on the sprawling plains. Alice MacGowan (1858-1947), was an American novelist who lived in Tennessee, and California. She co-authored more than thirty novels, a hundred short stories, and poetry, with her sister, Grace. She spent time at Upton Sinclair's Helicon Home Colony, before it burned down. She also spent time in the company of writers such as Jack London, Sinclair Lewis, and others while living at an artist's commune in Carmel-by-the-sea.

Book excerpt: The four classic novels of Sherlock Holmes, heavily illustrated and annotated with extensive scholarly commentary, in an attractive and elegant slipcase. The publication of Leslie S. Klinger's brilliant new annotations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's four classic Holmes novels in 2005 created a Holmes sensation. Klinger reassembles Doyle's four seminal novels in their original order, with over 1,000 notes, 350 illustrations and period photographs, and tantalizing new Sherlockian theories. Inside, readers will find: A Study in Scarlet (1887)—a tale of murder and revenge that tells of Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting; The Sign of Four (1889)—a chilling tale of lost treasure...and of how Watson met his wife; The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901)—hailed as the greatest mystery novel of all time; and The Valley of Fear (1914)—a fresh murder scene that leads Holmes to solve a long-forgotten mystery. Whether as a stand-alone volume or as a companion to the short stories, this classic work illuminates the timeless genius of Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Complete Guide to Literary Analysis and Theory offers an accessible introduction to all the current approaches to literary analysis. Ranging from stylistics and historicism to post-humanism and new materialism, it also includes chapters on media studies and screen studies. The Guide is designed for use in introductory literature courses and as a primer in theory courses. Each chapter summarizes the main ideas of each approach to the study of literature in clear prose, providing lucid introductions to the practice of each school, and conducts readings using classic and modern works of literature from around the world. The book draws on examples from a wide range of works from classics such as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Shakespeare's King Lear to contemporary works such as Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous and Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb." This wide-ranging introduction is ideal for students encountering literary study for the first time, as well as more advanced students who need a concise summary of critical methods. It strives to make complex ideas simple and provides readings that undergraduates should be able to understand and enjoy as well as training them to conduct analyses of their own.

Book excerpt: During the First World War, more than eighteen thousand Red Cross nurses served with the Army and Navy Nurse Corps. Elizabeth Ashe was one of them and was Chief Nurse of Children’s Bureau Department of Civil Affairs American Red Cross. She found her team overwhelmed with babies and orphan children who were injured, sick, and ill-cared-for. But they rose to the occasion. Ashe also spent time caring for wounded soldiers and saw first-hand the horrors of the Great War. She saw and heard the bombing and became inured to it. Since this book was published prior to the end of the war, Ashe may have hoped it would foster more support for the Red Cross efforts. The terse, vivid sentences of the letters create a picture of the scenes of suffering and the opportunities for service as they present themselves to the writer. Written under the stress of work and to those closest in her confidence, they bear the imprint of her character. For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Book excerpt: Human ecology is a synthetic transdisciplinary science concerned with human life and culture as a dynamic component of ecosystems. Typical of an interdisciplinary science is an approach which integrates topics under study across the usual traditional or classical branches of science Human ecology synthesizes part of the knowledge of several classical disciplines in a specific way. Of the many possible research orientations for understanding the relationship of people to their environment, not all are ecological, and only a few can be considered human ecology. More than 50 per cent of accumulated human knowledge is related to the study of man and some aspect of our environment. If we called all this knowledge human ecology, it would be a meaningless generalization, Because science has been based on the study of specific topics, for example such classic disciplines as physics, geology, biology, anthropology, and interactions such as genetics and ecology, or problems such as auxology and evolution, human ecology provides a definite transdisciplinary approach to study by assuming specific perspectives. Human ecology may be considered to have two parallel foci: (1) an academic human ecology as a scientific discipline, and (2) an action oriented human ecology which is technological (environmental engineering, environmental preservation, environmental education, and health protection against environmental deterioration.) In human ecology several categorical divisions and research perspectives may be defined and delimited into 4 main groups: 1 Philosophical problems of human ecology; 2. Social and biological problems of the human environment 3. Ecological problems of human biology 4. Cultural adaptive behavior. The works of about one hundred ninety persons were classified and included in this volume there are abstracts from others whose addresses are not included (sent by other authors, or by other institutions) but worthy of being added.
