Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Grammar for Schools and Colleges In reviewing the book, or in using it in the second. Or the third year work, the exercises can be varied by changing singu lars to plurals, plurals to singulars, questions to statements, statements to questions, direct to indirect discourse, etc. The supplement contains tables of the in ections and classi fied lists of nouns. Each vocabulary will be found complete in itself, without the necessity of looking up forms elsewhere. The in ection of the nouns is indicated and the principal parts of all the verbs are given, whether strong or weak, inseparable or sep arable. The long vowels are marked long and the accent of doubtful words is indicated. The index is made full, to afford easy access to the contents of the book. The references through out the book are to page and section, or to page and footnote, and should be so read. For example, 49, 3, should be read forty - nine, three; and 491 should be read forty-nine, footnote one' This system of reference will be found convenient and a great saver of time, for page and section are found far more quickly than sections numbered consecutively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Grammar for High Schools and Colleges In this grammar it has therefore been deemed advisable to differentiate the nouns taking no ending to form their nomina tive plural, into two separate classes: Class I, nouns Without umlaut in the plural, and Class II, nouns With umlaut. The same principle has been adopted in regard to the nouns taking the ending 6 to form their nominative plural; Class III con tains the nouns Without umlaut in the plural; Class IV those With the umlaut. As a necessary consequence of this system, the remaining strong nouns (with at in the nominative plural) form Class V. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete German Manual for High Schools and Colleges Notes is an exponent of them -have guided the author in determining the contents of the Manual, and adapting it to supply all the needs of the student previous to reading the complete texts of German authors. The Theory has been already tested by much experience, it being substantially a revision of so much of the author's Practical German Grammar as could serve the present pur pose. That work was almost literally produced in a college class-room; and the present revision embodies all the desirable additions, improvements, and corrections which have been suggested to the author in his own use of the Grammar, and in gathering the criticisms of other teachers, as the work passed through its first and second editions, as well as in comparing it with many other grammars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Grammar for Schools, Based on the Principles and Requirements of the Grammatical Society, Vol. 1: Accidence (Revised) A provisional issue of the present instalment of my Grammar (which is soon to be followed by Part 11. Containing the Syntax) was brought out last October at the request of friends who wished to use the book in their classes. The results of a year's experience of working the book in several schools and in my own classes at University College have been embodied in this revised edition, which has been entirely reprinted. Pronunciation can, of course, be learnt only from the lips of the teacher. But it is hoped that the tables of vowel and consonant sounds which are based on phonetic principles and are precisely parallel to those of the French Grammar of this series, will be a valuable instrument in the teacher's hands. The modern spelling, as regulated by Prussia and adopted more or less throughout Germany, has been introduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical German Grammar After the lapse of ten years, during which textbooks have multiplied and the literature of method has greatly increased, I find in this earlier confession of faith nothing that I wish to recant or to modify. There is no doubt room for differ ent kinds of books, varying with the age and ability of the pupil and with the idiosvncrasy of the teacher. Such a thing as the best method does not exist, and it is unwise to pin one's faith too strenuously to any routine or set of dogmas. The capable teacher will always wish to prove all things and hold fast to that which he personally finds to be good. I am convinced, however, that for learners who take up the serious study of German under the conditions ordinarily pre sented by our American high schools and colleges where the problem is the best use of a limited time a book planned on the general lines above described will prove most serviceable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in German Composition, Conversation and Grammar Review: For Use in Schools and Colleges Of the reading matter at the disposal of the author, thirty-two pieces have been selected for this volume as the groundwork for just as many lessons, which the author thinks 'ean be thoroughly studied in one school year of thirty-six weeks, allowing one recitation at the end of each quarter for reviewing, Sight reading, or extempore writing. The German selections include narrative, epistolary, descriptive, and easy essay styles, and, being carefully graded, they rise from the light and pleasing mystery of the nursery tale to the sober disquisition of the scientific theorem. For this reason, and since no two of these selec tions have come from the pen of the same writer, they naturally differ greatly in regard to diction and phrase ology, a feature not to be underrated in a book purporting to serve as an introduction to composition work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of German: A Practical Course for School and College The idea of effecting a compromise between the natural and the classica method in the teaching of modern languages is not a new one. It has been tried for some time and often with considerable success. The advantages of each method are so obvious to the thoughtful teacher - and the disadvantages no less - that it is but natural for a renewed attempt to be made to secure a perfect amalgamation of the benefits of both methods. In the book herewith presented a thorough study. Of the essential principles of German grammar lies at the foundation of the lessons. But the means by which these principles are to be inculcated are inductive rather than deductive. The student is first given a literary unit - a story or poem selected because of its fitness to illumine the particular point to be studied. From this as a text the grammatical rule is inferred, informal exercises based upon the chosen unit follow, and finally the new words thus used are impressed upon the memory by con stant repetition. The use of a story or a poem as illustration, instead of disconnected sentences, tends to arouse a real interest in the mind of the student, besides presenting language facts in their natural relationship and environment. These points are so well taken, it is hoped, that their pedagogical importance need not be further dwelt upon.
