It is a manual of geography and not of 'improved methods' of teaching. Only the essential features of the geography of the State are here printed. Many of the questions following the various chapters are left unanswered in the text. Whether or not the information to Which they allude is sought out depends upon the interest Which teacher and pupil take in the subject. The statistics of the State Will not be published until after the census returns of 1890 have been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical and Industrial Geography of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Lancaster County is almost a world in itself. Here may be found, sometimes in real proportions, again in miniature, many of the geographic features and not a few of the industrial conditions of the world. To pic ture these, to trace their geographic relations, to correlate them with those of the world at large is the task of the following pages. In the first half of the bulletin, an effort is made to present in the clearest manner possible the extremely interesting and wonderful phys ical geography of the County. This is important not only to the general reader but also to the teachers and school children. It forms the funda mental basis for the study of the industrial and social conditions both urban and rural. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History, Government and Geography of Carbon County, Pennsylvania Our education to-day lacks thoroughness. Children are taught a great many things not necessary for them to know, and they are not properly grounded in things that are essential. The lawmakers, the newspapers, the business men, and the general public are about unanimous on this point. The opinion is general that children on leaving school have accumulated a wide variety of information which helps them but little, if at all, toward making a living or of being of service to any one. Schools should be modified to overcome these Objections. Many portions of the common branches do not in any vital way touch the life Of industry which most of the children will want to, or will have to live. It is possible to select the absolute essentials which form the basis of later school work as well as of practical life, and make these the subject matter Of instruction. SO much of what is unessential may be filtered out, that time may be found to do well and thoroughly what is really necessary, and yet leave time for the introduction of things which will fit children more directly for service. We must not continue to turn children out of school who are utterly unequipped for their duties, or who have only the vaguest notions of anything that is useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State-Book of Pennsylvania: Containing an Account of the Geography, History, Government, Resources, and Noted Citizens of the State; With a Map of the State and of Each County Consisting, as it almost Wholly does, of a description of things, and a statement of facts, there is no room for invention and little for novelty in its composition. In the scope and arrangement of its materials, however, a considerable departure from the beaten track will be discovered. The counties are not treated in alphabetical order, but in classes, accord ing to their form of surface, productions, and historical relation. The strongly marked distinctive features of each group suggested this idea; and a desire to aid the learner by a rational and easily remembered divi sion of the subject of study induced its adoption. To carry out the design, a small state map, in addition to the separate county maps, has been con structed with the classes of counties marked upon it. The advantage of the change must be very small, if it do not compensate the learner for the loss of that easiness of reference, which is the only sound reason that can be urged in favour of the alphabetical arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Centuries of Pennsylvania History Pennsylvania justly merits the proud title, The Key tone State. Her history more than her geography gave her commanding relations to the sister colonies clustered along the western margin of the Atlantic. Her great founder and first English owner, William Penn is the noblest character in America's colonial history. In Penn sylvania every creed and every nationality was not only tolerated but welcomed. Her colonial life was more com plex than that of any sister colony. To mould this life, so unlike in nationality, in religion, in civic ideals, and in industrial experience, into a unified people is one of the noblest records in the annals of any nation. To the credit of her people this was done without persecution and with out coercion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections of the State of Pennsylvania The proverb says Charity begins at home. The study of history ought to begin at home also yet how many men are there in this state, as in others, who are far more familiar with the history of England, or with the career of Alexander, Caesar, or Napoleon, than with the events that have occurred upon the very fields which they themselves are tilling And this arises not so much from the want of intelligence On the part of the people, as from the lack of proper books and documents within their reach. It is believed, therefore, that a Work of the kind here pre sented is needed by the intelligent yeomanry of the state, for whose use it is especially intended and the compiler hopes that, while it may serve to enliven their long winter evenings, it will awaken in their minds a spirit of inquiry into the history of their own immediate neighborhoods, and at the same time furnish them with a fund of instructive incidents relating to the more dis tant sections of the state. It is a cause for regret that men and women who are otherwise well-informed should be so generally ignorant of the history and the meaning of the names that they use every day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gazetteer of the State of Pennsylvania IN offering to the public this first attempt at a Gazetteer of Pennsylvania, the publisher trusts it will be received with the indulgence due to the enterprize. The reflecting reader will justly appreciate the difficulties in procuring minute and accurate topographical and statistical information; and will not be surprized if, notwithstanding the efforts of the compiler, by visits to many parts of the state, by personal intercourse with official and intelligent gentlemen of every county, and by laborious research among the public records, some inaccuracies Should be found in the work. It is due to the compiler, however, to say, that circumstances have pre vented him from revising the work in its progress through the press, and, that for errors produced by that cause he is not responsible. In the first edition of such a work error is unavoidable; but the publisher flatters himself, that there is not more in this than in others of like character, and that it will prove useful and satisfactory to the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Pennsylvania No other state in the Union presents a history so closely connected with world progress as Pennsylvania. Here are to be found the beginnings of many types of religions. Here was the first real experiment in popular government. Here have been developed the whole theory and practice of transportation and the intricate factory system. Pennsylvania has been the laboratory in which many important experiments in sociology, religion, and government have been performed. Local history has an appeal not easily found in works covering a larger sphere. In this book an effort has been made so to present the subject as to lead the pupil to a better understanding of our national history. Hence special emphasis has been laid upon the various incidents in the life of the nation which have taken place in Pennsylvania. To make these relations clear to the pupil it has often been necessary to mention events which have occurred in other states. This plan has been followed in the hope that this book may be used as an introduction to, and in connection with, a study of the history of the United States. In the arrangement of materials, the topical method of treatment has been employed. This has occasionally brought events out of their chronological order. This was done to make the relation of events clear to pupils. In addition it was thought that detached descriptions of incidents have a tendency to form the bad habit of committing history to memory, whereas a logical arrangement encourages a correct method of study. The author is indebted for assistance and encouragement to Hon. Nathan C. Schaeffer and Hon. A. D. Glenn. Special acknowledgment is made to Dr. J. George Becht, Hon. Reed B. Teitrick, and Miss Katherine M. Ulery, of the Greensburg High School, who carefully read all of the manuscript and made valuable corrections and suggestions.
