It began with Great Grandma Anna Mae's affair with the church pastor. After finding them in bed together, his wife hexed Anna Mae to prevent the women of her family from ever marrying, and the results are said to have lasted generations. Anna Mae and her sisters died without being wed. Grandma Fey never married. Aunt Connie has given up on men. And Meena's mother, Deena, continually runs into dead-end relationships. The Man Curse explores the phenomenon of generational curses and family cycles told through the eyes of Meena Butler. Her life is nearly in order, with one exception: the family curse. Raised to believe an age-old hex holds her back from landing the love of a lifetime, a journey toward emotional healing forces Meena to face the truth and question if she really does have the Man Curse. Or is it all in her head?

Book excerpt: Algernon Wright, the Earl of Draconhawthshire, takes great care to avoid bad luck. Over the years, he’s learned to sway good luck in his favor, and because of that, he’s managed to avoid many unlucky incidents. The only thing he can’t change, however, is the curse that hovers over his life. On his twenty-fifth birthday, Algernon is doomed to die. That leaves him only one year to get married so he can pass on his title to an heir. Ideally, the lady he marries will be a spinster who isn’t all that interested in marriage but will be happy to be a mother. Then, when he dies early, neither one of them will miss each other. Instead of the old spinster he hopes to find, however, he comes across Miss Reina Livingstone. She is vibrant and full of life. She gives him the one thing he lost over the years: hope. Reina knows Algernon believes he’s cursed, but she doesn’t. The poor gentleman has lived under the heaviness of sorrow for so long that he hasn’t really learned to enjoy life. He deserves a love match. And she’s going to make it her mission to marry him, regardless of whether it brings good or bad luck.

Book excerpt: This is a book about curses. It is not about curses as insults or offensive language but curses as petitions to the divine world to render judgment and execute harm on identified, hostile forces. In the ancient world, curses functioned in a way markedly different from our own, and it is into the world of the ancient Near East that we must go in order to appreciate the scope of their influence. For the ancient Near Easterners, curses had authentic meaning. Curses were part of their life and religion. They were not inherently magic or features of superstitions, nor were they mere curiosities or trifling antidotes. They were real and effective. They were employed proactively and reactively to manage life’s many vicissitudes and maintain social harmony. They were principally protective, but they were also the cause of misfortune, illness, depression, and anything else that undermined a comfortable, well-balanced life. Every member of society used them, from slave to king, from young to old, from men and women to the deities themselves. They crossed cultural lines and required little or no explanation, for curses were the source of great evil. In other words, curses were universal. Because curses were woven into the very fabric of every known ancient Near Eastern society, they emerge frequently and in a wide variety of venues. They appear on public and private display objects, on tomb stelae, tomb lintels, and sarcophagi, on ancient kudurrus and narûs. They are used in political, administrative, social, religious, and familial contexts. They are the subject of incantations. They are tools that exorcise demons and dispel disease; they ban, protect, and heal. This is the phenomenology of cursing in the ancient Near East, and this is what the present work explores.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, the biblical story of the Curse of Ham was marshalled as a justification of serfdom, slavery and human bondage. According to the myth, having seen his father Noah naked, Ham's is cursed to have his descendants be forever slaves. In this new book the Curse of Ham is explored in its Reformation context, revealing how it became the cornerstone of the Christian defence of slavery and the slave trade for the next four hundred years. It shows how broader medieval interpretations of the story became marginalized in the early modern period as writers such as Annius of Viterbo and George Best began to weave the legend of Ham into their own books, expanding and adding to the legend in ways that established a firm connection between Ham, Africa, slavery and race. For although in the original biblical text Ham himself is not cursed and race is never mentioned, these writers helped develop the story of Ham into an ideological and theological defence for African slavery, at the precise time that the Transatlantic Slave Trade began to establish itself as a major part of the European economy during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Skilfully weaving together elements of theology, literature and history, this book provides a fascinating insight into the ways that issues of religion, economics and race could collide in the Reformation world. It will prove essential reading, not only for those with an interest in early modern history, but for anyone wishing to try to comprehend the origins of arguments used to justify slavery and segregation right up to the 1960s.
