Book excerpt: Design of water distribution networks is traditionally based on trial-and-approach in which the designer assumes, based on experience and judgment, sizes of different elements and successively modifies them until a network with satisfactory hydraulic performance is obtained. This text covers: Essential hydraulic, economic optimization principles. Theory is developed gradually for optimal design of simple, single-source branched networks subjected to single loading to complex, multiple-source looped networks subjected to multiple loading. Strengthening and expansion of existing networks and also reliability-based design. Several illustrative examples enabling the reader to apply them in practice- approximately 100 line drawings.
Book Synopsis Hydrological Modeling by : Ramakar Jha
Download or read book Hydrological Modeling written by Ramakar Jha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-05 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carefully considers hydrological models which are essential for predicting floods, droughts, soil moisture estimation, land use change detection, geomorphology and water structures. The book highlights recent advances in the area of hydrological modelling in the Ganga Basin and other internationally important river basins. The impact of climate change on water resources is a global concern. Water resources in many countries are already stressed, and climate change along with burgeoning population, rising standard of living and increasing demand are adding to the stress. Furthermore, river basins are becoming less resilient to climatic vagaries. Fundamental to addressing these issues is hydrological modelling which is covered in this book. Integrated water resources management is vital to ensure water and food security. Integral to the management is groundwater and solute transport, and this book encompasses tools that will be useful to mitigate the adverse consequences of natural disasters.

Book Synopsis Deterioration and Optimal Rehabilitation Modelling for Urban Water Distribution Systems by : Yi Zhou
Download or read book Deterioration and Optimal Rehabilitation Modelling for Urban Water Distribution Systems written by Yi Zhou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pipe failures in water distribution systems can have a serious impact and hence it’s important to maintain the condition and integrity of the distribution system. This book presents a whole-life cost optimisation model for the rehabilitation of water distribution systems. It combines a pipe breakage number prediction model with a pipe criticality assessment model, which enables the creation of a well-constructed and more tightly constrained optimisation model. The pipe breakage number prediction model combines information on the physical characteristics of the pipes with historical information on breakage and failure rates. A weighted multiple nonlinear regression analysis is applied to describe the condition of different pipe groups. The criticality assessment model combines a pipe’s condition with its hydraulic significance through a modified TOPSIS. This model enables the optimisation to focus its efforts on those important pipes. The whole life cost optimal rehabilitation model is a multiple-objective and multiple-stage model, which provides a suite of rehabilitation decisions that minimise the whole life cost while maximising its long-term performance. The optimisation model is solved using a modified NSGA-II. The utility of the developed models is that it allows decision makers to prioritize their rehabilitation strategy in a proactive and cost-effective manner.

Book Synopsis Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls by : J. Marsalek
Download or read book Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls written by J. Marsalek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding past achievements, flood damage continues to rise throughout the world as the magnitudes of floods increase, partly as a result of poor land management and partly by climate change, growing populations and continuing development in flood-prone areas, and the aging and deterioration of flood defences. One of the major goals of water management is the protection of society from floods. That issue is addressed here in terms of such broad issues as flood analysis, flood impact, non-structural and structural flood management measures. Non-structural measures focus on flood plain management, flood insurance, flood forecasting and warning, and emergency measures during floods. Structural measures focus on catchment management, embankments and flood reservoirs. Post-flood measures are also discussed. Future planning of flood management should be based on a clear understanding of the effectiveness interventions and their impacts on river catchment ecosystems.
