This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief proposes a general framework for reasoning about inconsistency in a wide variety of logics, including inconsistency resolution methods that have not yet been studied. The proposed framework allows users to specify preferences on how to resolve inconsistency when there are multiple ways to do so. This empowers users to resolve inconsistency in data leveraging both their detailed knowledge of the data as well as their application needs. The brief shows that the framework is well-suited to handle inconsistency in several logics, and provides algorithms to compute preferred options. Finally, the brief shows that the framework not only captures several existing works, but also supports reasoning about inconsistency in several logics for which no such methods exist today.

Book excerpt: It is not unusual for a festschrift to include offerings from several areas of study, but it is highly unusual for those areas to cross disciplinary lines. This book, in doing just that, is a testimony to Bob Abelson's impact on the disciplines of social psychology, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and the applied areas of political psychology and decision-making. The contributors demonstrate that their association with Abelson, whether as students or colleagues, has resulted in an impressive intellectual cross-fertilization.

Book excerpt: This volume contains some carefully selected papers presented at the 8th International Conference on Knowledge, Information and Creativity Support Systems KICCS’2013, which was held in Kraków and Wieliczka, Poland in November 2013. In most cases the papers are extended versions with newer results added, representing virtually all topics covered by the conference. The KICCS’2013 focus theme, “Looking into the Future of Creativity and Decision Support Systems”, clearly indicates that the growing complexity calls for some deeper and insightful discussions about the future but, obviously, complemented with an exposition of modern present developments that have proven their power and usefulness. Following this theme, the list of topics presented in this volume include some future-oriented fields of research, such as anticipatory networks and systems, foresight support systems, relevant newly-emerging applications, exemplified by autonomous creative systems. Special attention was also given to cognitive and collaborative aspects of creativity.

Book excerpt: The LNCS journal Transactions on Computational Science reflects recent developments in the field of Computational Science, conceiving the field not as a mere ancillary science but rather as an innovative approach supporting many other scientific disciplines. The journal focuses on original high-quality research in the realm of computational science in parallel and distributed environments, encompassing the facilitating theoretical foundations and the applications of large-scale computations and massive data processing. It addresses researchers and practitioners in areas ranging from aerospace to biochemistry, from electronics to geosciences, from mathematics to software architecture, presenting verifiable computational methods, findings and solutions and enabling industrial users to apply techniques of leading-edge, large-scale, high performance computational methods. Transactions on Computational Science II is devoted to the subject of denotational mathematics for computational intelligence. Denotational mathematics, as a counterpart of conventional analytic mathematics, is a category of expressive mathematical structures that deals with high-level mathematical entities beyond numbers and sets, such as abstract objects, complex relations, behavioral information, concepts, knowledge, processes, granules, and systems. This volume includes 12 papers covering the following four important areas: foundations and applications of denotational mathematics; rough and fuzzy set theories; granular computing; and knowledge and information modeling.

Book excerpt: When complex IT systems are being developed, the usage of several programming and modelling languages can lead to inconsistencies that yield faulty designs and implementations. To address this problem, this work contributes a classification of consistency preservation challenges and an approach for preserving consistency. It is formalized using set theory and monitors changes to avoid matching and diffing problems. Three new languages that follow this preservation approach are presented.

It provides logical foundations for annotated logics, discusses some interesting applications of these logics and also includes the authors' contributions to annotated logics. The central idea of the book is to show how annotated logic can be applied as a tool to solve problems of technology and of applied science. The book will be of interest to pure and applied logicians, philosophers and computer scientists as a monograph on a kind of paraconsistent logic. But, the layman will also take profit from its reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is law paradoxical? This book seeks to unravel the riddle of legal paradoxes. It focuses on two main questions: the nature of legal paradoxes, and their social ramifications. In exploring the structure of legal paradoxes, the book focuses both on generic paradoxes, such as those associated with the self-referential character of legal validity and the endemic incoherence of legal discourse, and on paradoxes that permeate more restricted fields of law, such as contract law, euthanasia, and human rights (the prohibition of torture). The discussion of the social effects of legal paradoxes focuses on the role of paradoxes as drivers of legal change, and explores the institutional mechanisms that ensure the stability of the law, in spite of its paradoxical makeup. The essays in the book discuss these questions from various perspectives, invoking insights from philosophy, systems theory, deconstruction and economics.
