One hot August morning, Vanessa, a young turkey vulture, is hunting for food when she sports a half-buried dog in a field. She swoops down and enjoys a savory meal. As she flies home, she begins to feel sick. Before long, she falls from the sky and crashes into a stranger's backyard. She's scared, unable to move, and desperately wants her mother. She trembles with fear as a human shadow closes in on her. What made her sick? Will the human harm her? Will she ever see her family again?

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Armed Madhouse offers a globetrotting, Sam Spade-style investigation that blows the lid off the oil industry, the banking industry, and the governmental agencies that aren't regulating either. This is the story of the corporate vultures that feed on the weak and ruin our planet in the process-a story that spans the globe and decades. For Vultures' Picnic, investigative journalist Greg Palast has spent his career uncovering the connection between the world of energy (read: oil) and finance. He's built a team that reads like a casting call for a Hollywood thriller-a Swiss multilingual investigator, a punk journalist, and a gonzo cameraman-to reveal how environmental disasters like the Gulf oil spill, the Exxon Valdez, and lesser-known tragedies such as Tatitlek and Torrey Canyon are caused by corporate corruption, failed legislation, and, most interestingly, veiled connections between the billionaires of financial industry and energy titans. Palast shows how the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and Central Banks act as puppets and bandits for Big Oil. With Palast at the center of an investigation that takes us from the Arctic to Africa to the Amazon, Vultures' Picnic shows how the big powers in the money and oil game slip the bonds of regulation over and over again, and simply destroy the rules that they themselves can't write-and take advantage of nations and everyday people in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth exegetical studies of five key biblical prophecy passages: Daniel's Seventy Weeks (Dan 9: 24-27); Jesus' Olivet Discourse (Matt 24:1-36); Paul's Man of Sin (2 Thess. 2:1-10); Revelation's the Beast (Rev. 13); and Revelation's Babylonian Harlot (Rev. 17). In these studies the author shows that each of these prophecies were fulfilled in the first century and were closely linked to the destruction of the Jewish temple in AD 70. The presentations are thoroughly evangelical and rigorously biblical.

Book excerpt: Broken Jar is for those who wish to be transformed by the Potter from a showboat into an ark of testimony for Him. It is for earthen vessels who know that to be continually molded by His hands-even broken and reformed, if need be-is the only way to keep bearing His hallmark-the only way to continue glorifying the true Potter. From January through December, these daily devotionals, anchored deeply in the Word of God, ask challenging questions about growing pains and comfortable stagnation: - Are we allowing the Potter to do as He pleases with us, the clay? - Do we trust Him to put pressure where it is needed to mold us to His liking, or do we stiffen at and shrink from His touch? - When we arrive at a shape we like, do we grow so proud and possessive of this present form that we disengage ourselves from the wheel to harden into an independent and finished pot to remain permanently "fixed"? This book is for those jars who refuse to stay fixed. Jan Doke is a retired high school English/Bible Literature teacher. She lives in Belton, Texas with her husband, Larry. When she is not writing, she enjoys studying and teaching the Bible, speaking at women's retreats, mentoring at a drug-rehab center, traveling, hiking, fishing, cooking, and playing with her five grandchildren. She has been published in Christian Woman magazine and is currently working on her first novel, Out of the Chute in Azalea Heights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite centuries of scholarly and popular engagement, much confusion still hangs over Jesus’ Olivet Discourse. There is no consensus on the nature and meaning of the disciples’ question in Matt 24:3. How is the temple’s fate related to the parousia or second coming of Jesus? Is the Great Tribulation past, present, or future? Will Christians be raptured to heaven? Should you rather prefer to be “left behind”? Combining inductive and discourse grammar approaches as bases for literary structure and analysis, this study is a holistic and compelling fresh interpretation of Jesus’ eschatological discourse that provides answers to these questions. The author shows that extant interpretive frameworks fail to adequately account for the biblical data. Moreover, and unlike the available treatments, the study sheds light on the discourse’s structural and theological function within Matthew’s Gospel as a whole and how it coheres with New Testament teaching in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey vultures, the most widely distributed and abundant scavenging birds of prey on the planet, are found from central Canada to the southern tip of Argentina, and nearly everywhere in between. In the United States we sometimes call them buzzards; in parts of Mexico the name is aura cabecirroja, in Uruguay jote cabeza colorada, and in Ecuador gallinazo aura. A huge bird, the turkey vulture is a familiar sight from culture to culture, in both hemispheres. But despite being ubiquitous and recognizable, the turkey vulture has never had a book of literary nonfiction devoted to it - until Vulture. Floating on six-foot wings, turkey vultures use their keen senses of smell and sight to locate carrion. Unlike their cousin the black vulture, turkey vultures do not kill weak or dying animals; instead, they cleanse, purify, and renew the environment by clearing it of decaying carcasses, thus slowing the spread of such dangerous pathogens as anthrax, rabies, and botulism. The beauty, grace, and important role of these birds in the ecosystem notwithstanding, turkey vultures are maligned and underappreciated; they have been accused of spreading disease and killing livestock, neither of which has ever been substantiated. Although turkey vultures are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which makes harming them a federal offense, the birds still face persecution. They've been killed because of their looks, their odor, and their presence in proximity to humans. Even the federal government occasionally sanctions "roost dispersals," which involve the harassment and sometimes the murder of communally roosting vultures during the cold winter months. Vulture follows a year in the life of a typical North American turkey vulture. By incorporating information from scientific papers and articles, as well as interviews with world-renowned raptor and vulture experts, author Katie Fallon examines all aspects of the bird's natural history: breeding, incubating eggs, raising chicks, migrating, and roosting. After reading this book you will never look at a vulture in the same way again.

Book excerpt: What does the first book of the New Testament teach? As the first gospel, the book of Matthew is a bridge between the Old Testament and the New. It presents Jesus as the Messiah predicted in the Old Testament, but also as the Savior whose death was necessary for the salvation of mankind. Yet Matthew also describes the future Kingdom of Jesus when He will reign on earth at His Second Coming. In this fourth volume of the renewed Walvoord Commentary Series, renowned biblical scholar and prophecy expert John Walvoord, along with Dr. Charles Dyer, walks readers through the gospel of Matthew chapter by chapter and unfolds his message of Jesus’ Messianic identity, teachings, miracles, and future return as victorious King. Revised and updated throughout and based on the text of the English Standard Version (ESV), this new edition of Walvoord’s commentary will serve a whole new generation of pastors, leaders, and laypeople.

Book excerpt: Like his original hearers many people today find Jesus' sayings hard. Some sayings are hard because they are difficult to understand, others because the demands they make on us are only too clear. F. F. Bruce examines seventy of the hard sayings of Jesus to clear away the cultural and historical difficulties which keep us from grappling with the real challenge of Jesus' message. Evident in each chapter is Bruce's keen evangelical scholarship and pastoral insight.
