Hence, so far as laying out went, there was absolutely no call for improvement. All had been so well and effectively outlined, that the landscape gardener himself must have approved. The leaves are large, thick, slightly crumpled, very fleshy, and carried on long stems. The color is a very dark green. The most important point about this Spinach, however, is that it stands fully one month longer than any other variety before bolting to seed. In spite of this, it is quite early to mature, and it is ready for cutting most as soon as Bloomsdale. We predict a heavy demand for Emerald Standing by truckers, market gardeners, private gardeners, and amateurs. Seed is obtainable only in limited quantity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gardens for Small Country Houses After the publication of the first and second editions of this book kindly readers indicated many points on which they thought our advice to the makers of gardens could usefully be expanded, and we gladly met their wishes. Perhaps we may. without offence, be pleased that during the currency of the third edition few such suggestions came to us. So it happens that this fourth edition is little different from the third hut since the latter appeared the times have changed greatly. Without seeking to fill the role of the gloomy prophet, we cannot escape the belief that the changes in social life and habit, which are the mark of our economic troubles, are striking at the maintenance of great gardens, as of great houses, in this pleasant land. But if those who have built up. kept, and loved so well their spacious gardens must needs be content with smaller houses, and if, as seems likely, the wider distribution of wealth will lead to-morrow to the creation of many more small country houses, the art of making gardens for such houses will increase in importance. If this prove true, we hope our work will still achieve some measure of usefulness, and help us, in Dr. Johnson's phrase. "to keep our friendship in repair" with many unknown and too appreciative readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I can safely say, all flowers require sun shine; therefore we must follow Mr. Sun for a day or two, and see just where he casts his beams, for in just those spots must we use our greatest efforts.
