Book excerpt: In this project we proposed to develop an innovative uncertainty quantification methodology that captures the best of the two competing approaches in UQ, namely, intrusive and non-intrusive approaches. The idea is to develop the mathematics and the associated computational framework and algorithms to facilitate the use of intrusive or non-intrusive UQ methods in different modules of a multi-physics multi-module simulation model in a way that physics code developers for different modules are shielded (as much as possible) from the chores of accounting for the uncertain ties introduced by the other modules. As the result of our research and development, we have produced a number of publications, conference presentations, and a software product.

We (*) propose a novel approach for coupling mesoscale and macroscale models, (*) devise efficient numerical methods for simulating the coupled system, and (*) devise and analyze effective numerical approaches for error and uncertainty quantification for the coupled multiscale system. As an integral part of the project, we will carry out analysis of the effects of upscaling and downscaling, investigate efficient methods for stochastic sensitivity analysis of the individual macroscale and mesoscale models, and carry out a posteriori error analysis for computed results. We will pursue development and implementation of solutions in software used at Idaho National Laboratories on models of interest to the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program.

Book excerpt: Various advanced nuclear reactors including fluoride high-temperature salt-cooled reactors (FHRs), molten salt reactors (MSRs) and fusion devices have proposed to use molten salt coolants. However, there remain many uncertainties in the chemistry, dynamics and physicochemical properties of many salts, especially over the course of reactor operation, where impurities are introduced, and compositional and thermodynamic changes occur. Density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) were used for property, structure and chemistry predictions for a variety of salts including LiF, KF, NaF, BeF2, LiCl, KCl, NaCl, prototypical Flibe (66.6%LiF-33.3%BeF2), and Flinak (46.5%LiF-11.5NaF-42%KF). Predictions include thermophysical and transport properties such as bulk density, thermal expansion coefficient, bulk modulus, and diffusivity, which were compared to available experimental data. DFT consistently overpredicted bulk density by about 7%, while all other properties generally agreed with experiments within experimental and numerical uncertainties. Local structure was found to be well predicted where pair distribution functions showed similar first peak distances (+ 0.1 A) and first shell coordination numbers (+ 0.4 on average), indicating accurate simulation of chemical structures and atomic distances. Diffusivity was also generally well predicted within experimental uncertainty (+20%). Validated DFT and AIMD methods were applied to study tritium in prototypical salts since it is an important corrosive and diffusive impurity found in salt reactors. It was found that tritium species diffusivity depended on its speciation (TF vs. T2), which was related to chemical structures formed in Flibe and Flinak salts. Further, predictions allowed comparison with and interpretation of past contradictory experimental results found in the literature. Lastly, robust neural network interatomic potentials (NNIPs) were developed for LiF and Flibe. The LiF NNIP accurately reproduced DFT calculations for pair interactions, solid LiF and liquid molten salt. The Flibe NNIP was developed for molten salt at the reactor operating temperature of 973K and was found to reproduce local structures calculated from DFT and showed good stability and accuracy during extended MD simulation. Ab initio methods and NNIPs can play a major role in advanced reactor development. Combined with experiments, these methods can greatly improve fundamental understanding and accelerate materials discovery, design and selection.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modeling of nuclear reactors involves the solution of a multi-physics problem with widely varying time and length scales. This translates mathematically to solving a system of coupled, non-linear, and stiff partial differential equations (PDEs). Multi-physics applications possess the added complexity that most of the solution fields participate in various physics components, potentially yielding spatial and/or temporal coupling errors. This dissertation deals with the verification aspects associated with such a multi-physics code, i.e., the substantiation that the mathematical description of the multi-physics equations are solved correctly (both in time and space). Conventional paradigms used in reactor analysis problems employed to couple various physics components are often non-iterative and can be inconsistent in their treatment of the non-linear terms. This leads to the usage of smaller time steps to maintain stability and accuracy requirements, thereby increasing the overall computational time for simulation. The inconsistencies of these weakly coupled solution methods can be overcome using tighter coupling strategies and yield a better approximation to the coupled non-linear operator, by resolving the dominant spatial and temporal scales involved in the multi-physics simulation. A multi-physics framework, KARMA (K(c)ode for Analysis of Reactor and other Multi-physics Applications), is presented. KARMA uses tight coupling strategies for various physical models based on a Matrix-free Nonlinear-Krylov (MFNK) framework in order to attain high-order spatio-temporal accuracy for all solution fields in amenable wall clock times, for various test problems. The framework also utilizes traditional loosely coupled methods as lower-order solvers, which serve as efficient preconditioners for the tightly coupled solution. Since the software platform employs both lower and higher-order coupling strategies, it can easily be used to test and evaluate different coupling strategies and numerical methods and to compare their efficiency for problems of interest. Multi-physics code verification efforts pertaining to reactor applications are described and associated numerical results obtained using the developed multi-physics framework are provided. The versatility of numerical methods used here for coupled problems and feasibility of general non-linear solvers with appropriate physics-based preconditioners in the KARMA framework offer significantly efficient techniques to solve multi-physics problems in reactor analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) is a fast reactor system developed at Argonne National Laboratory in the decade 1984 to 1994. The IFR project developed the technology for a complete system; the reactor, the entire fuel cycle and the waste management technologies were all included in the development program. The reactor concept had important features and characteristics that were completely new and fuel cycle and waste management technologies that were entirely new developments. The reactor is a "fast" reactor - that is, the chain reaction is maintained by "fast" neutrons with high energy - which produces its own fuel. The IFR reactor and associated fuel cycle is a closed system. Electrical power is generated, new fissile fuel is produced to replace the fuel burned, its used fuel is processed for recycling by pyroprocessing - a new development - and waste is put in final form for disposal. All this is done on one self-sufficient site. The scale and duration of the project and its funding made it the largest nuclear energy R and D program of its day. Its purpose was the development of a long term massive new energy source, capable of meeting the nation's electrical energy needs in any amount, and for as long as it is needed, forever, if necessary. Safety, non-proliferation and waste toxicity properties were improved as well, these three the characteristics most commonly cited in opposition to nuclear power.Development proceeded from success to success. Most of the development had been done when the program was abruptly cancelled by the newly elected Clinton Administration. In his 1994 State of the Union address the president stated that "unnecessary programs in advanced reactor development will be terminated." The IFR was that program. This book gives the real story of the IFR, written by the two nuclear scientists who were most deeply involved in its conception, the development of its R and D program, and its management.Between the scientific and engineering papers and reports, and books on the IFR, and the non-technical and often impassioned dialogue that continues to this day on fast reactor technology, we felt there is room for a volume that, while accurate technically, is written in a manner accessible to the non-specialist and even to the non-technical reader who simply wants to know what this technology is.
