Book Synopsis Defying the Odds by : Michele Cunningham
Download or read book Defying the Odds written by Michele Cunningham and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Australian servicemen captured by the Japanese in World War II, humour, courage and dignity in the face of hardship, brutality and deprivation ? and hope in the face of the unknown ? were quiet victories. They defined a uniquely Australian spirit. Defying the Odds tells the incredible story of the officers of B and E Forces interned at Sandakan and Kuching in Borneo. Despite the starvation and the trauma they suffered at the hands of the Japanese, they boosted morale through a regimen of study, music and theatre, and most importantly, by making each other laugh. After the war, military authorities were impressed by their physical and mental resilience and astounded by their achievements. As the years passed, they frequently held reunions to remember their experiences, to relive the jokes and the times they outwitted the guards, to recall old songs and the musicals and plays they staged ? to honour friendships wrought by the war. This is a full-length account of how the officers of B and E Forces defied the odds, and survived.

Book Synopsis As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me by : Josef M. Bauer
Download or read book As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me written by Josef M. Bauer and published by Constable. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1955, this must be one of the most dramatic adventures of our time. Clemens Forell, a German soldier, was sentenced to 25 years of forced labour in a Siberian lead mine after the Second World War. Rebelling against the brutality of the camp, Forell staged a daring escape, enduring an 8000-mile journey across the trackless wastes of Siberia, in some of the most treacherous and inhospitable conditions on earth. Bauer's writing brilliantly evokes Forell's desperation in the prison camp, and his struggle for survival and terror of recapture as he makes his way towards the Persian frontier and freedom.
Book Synopsis Civil Wars In Britain, 1640-1646: Military Revolution On Campaign by : Major Bradley T. Gericke
Download or read book Civil Wars In Britain, 1640-1646: Military Revolution On Campaign written by Major Bradley T. Gericke and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military organization of nation states and their employment of armies are central aspects of early modern European history. The seventeenth century was particularly a period of transformation that witnessed drastic change in armies’ preparation for and execution of military campaigns. To date, historians have tended to overlook military development as it occurred in the British Isles. Yet Britain offers the historian an interesting subject for the examination of first, how emerging ideas of military organization, doctrine, and strategy were transmitted from the European continent; and second, how British soldiers demonstrated their familiarity with contemporary military practice through the conduct of campaigns. The evidence of military publications within Britain, as well as the experience of British soldiers overseas, indicates that English and Scottish soldiers grappled with the important tenets of the continental military revolution. The campaign strategies employed by British military commanders during the Second Bishops’ War of 1640 and the English Civil War of 1642-1646 were undoubtedly complex and reflective of the confused political conditions of the period. Nonetheless, British soldiers attempted to fight and to win using a contemporary, thoroughly European understanding of warfare.
Book Synopsis The British Conquest and Dominion of India by : Penderel Moon
Download or read book The British Conquest and Dominion of India written by Penderel Moon and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 1274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some years before his death the veteran India hand Sir Penderel Moon was engaged in what was to be the culmination of his lifes work: a large-scale history of the two centuries of British involvement in India â from the battle of Plassey to the final independence of India and Pakistan some forty years ago. It is a masterly account of men and events. Part One describes the conquests of the East India Company in the wake of the disintegrating Moghul empire, and the gradual development of an administrative system. A major theme is the haphazard nature of the growth of British rule and the general ineffectiveness of the home authorities. Another is the conflict of attitudes between those who wish to replace Indian with English ways and those concerned to preserve what was best in Indias ancient civilization. The watershed was the disastrous Mutiny of 1857. Part Two describes the eighty-nine years during which India was ruled directly from Whitehall and the growing demand by Indians for self-government (fed by literal ideas from the British themselves). The more far-sighted has long recognized this as inevitable, though few if any had foreseen that the end of British rule would mean the loss of Indian unity. --

But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him "The Fittest (Real) Man in America." In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities.
