The main objectives of the survey were to: identify any rare vascular plants on Elmendorf Air Force Base; document additions to the flora of Elmendorf Air Force Base; insure that the vascular flora of the monitoring plots is accurately documented. We documented 301 vascular plant taxa for Elmendorf Air Force Base of which 99 were new to the base and one species was new to South central Alaska. Five rare vascular plant species (Alaska Natural Heritage Program rank S1-S3) were found.

The book describes and illustrates all flowering plants and vascular cryptograms known to occur in Alaska, the Yukon, the Mackenzie District, and the eastern extremity of Siberia. Fort Wainwright covers 370,450 hectares (915,000 acres); it was divided into five areas: 1) the valleys of a cantonment area of base facilities, 2) the slopes and alpine areas of the Yukon-Tanana Uplands, 3) Tanana Flats and associated wetlands, 4) the upland buttes and Blair Lakes area in Tanana Flats, and 5) the floodplains of the Tanana and Chena Rivers. Over 100 sites were visited, with habitats ranging from very dry south-facing slopes to forest, floodplains, wetlands, and alpine tundra. Vascular collections represented 491 species (including subspecies and varieties), included about 26% of Alaska's vascular flora, and are considered to be relatively complete. The cryptogam collections included 219 species, representing 92 mosses, 117 lichens, and lO liverworts. The flora is characteristic of the circumpolarboreal forest and wetlands of both North America and Eurasia, but it also contains alpine and dry-grassland and steppe species.

Book excerpt: This inventory expands the floristic coverage of the Medicine Bow Mountains, located in southeastern Wyoming. This range, covering 830 square miles, was surveyed for all species of vascular plant. Most of the lands inventoried belong to the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest but small portions are under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management or owned by the State of Wyoming. Over three summers, 9,837 numbered specimens were collected at 168 sites, representing 858 taxa and one hybrid. An additional 197 taxa are included in the checklist. They were not found during this study but documented by previous collectors (Rocky Mountain Herbarium Plant Specimen Database). Thus the total of unique taxa for the Medicine Bows is 1052. Alchemilla filicaulis ssp. filicaulis and Carex arcta are species new to Wyoming. Also documented were eight noxious weeds and 25 species of conservation concern. The latter were found at 62 locations.

The Flora represented the life work of botanist Jacob Peter Anderson who's aim was to produce a flora encompassing all known vascular plants in the state. Included are keys and descriptions for each family, genus and species; small line-drawings are provided for diagnostic features of many of the plants included in the book. Long out-of-print and now somewhat dated in terms of what is now known of the Alaskan flora and species taxonomy, Anderson's Flora remains, however, a valuable resource for the study of Alaska's diverse plant life. Also, there is no field guide-sized reference useful for researchers, students, and others studying plants in the field. As the original book did not provide keys and descriptions to the important willow (Salix) genus, an addendum is provided with summer and winter keys to the willow species known from the Alaska interior. Author J. P. Anderson (1874-1953) resided in Alaska from 1913-1940, before leaving for a position at Iowa State University where he continued his work of preparing his Flora, including a number of return visits to Alaska for additional field research.
