Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains two Verne stories that share only one thing in common: they both feature water. They have been published together before but never with the added bonus short story. A Floating City is the story of a trans-Atlantic trip on a monstrous passenger vessel-larger than ever build in Verne's time-and features rekindled friendships, old enemies, a passenger who is certain the ship is doomed, storms, deaths at sea, a mysterious insane woman, Niagara Falls and a duel. The Blockade Runners is the tale of a small ship and her crew used to run the blockades meant to halt resupplying of cities and military forts during the U.S. Civil War. It tells of the perils they face and of their fate. Finally, a small treat in Verne's The Mutineers Of The Bounty. Based on the true story that reached France it recounts the tale of the mutineers and their Captain.

Book excerpt: Jules Verne is the author of many classic, world-famous novels such as "Around the World in 80 Days" and "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". In this brand-new translation of "The Blockade Runners", Verne moves seamlessly between Scotland and the southern states of the US during the American Civil War. With the southern harbours effectively sealed by the North, Scottish industrialist James Playfair must run a daring Federalist blockade of a Charleston harbour in an effort to trade supplies for cotton and to rescue a young girl's father, held prisoner by the Confederates. As the blockade grows tighter, will Playfair risk all to save the man, or will he head back to Scotland in safety with his hold full of precious cotton? "The Blockade Runners" is a translation of "Les Forceurs de Blocus" (1871). As a novella, it was originally included along with "A Floating City" in the first English and French editions. BACK COVER Blockade runners in the American Civil War risked the Unionist blockade to trade in the Confederate ports. The potential profit for those who evaded the blockade was a great temptation for some merchants, regardless of their political views. In The Blockade Runners, a Scottish merchant James Playfair hatches a scheme to sail across the Atlantic during the American Civil War sea blockade smuggling weapons to the Confederates in exchange for cotton. His mission is put at risk when Jenny, the daughter of an abolitionist, is discovered on board. Will he risk everything to save her father, a prisoner of the Confederates? Torn between his desire for a successful mission and his growing love for Jenny, James must choose his allegiances carefully.

The Blockade Runners, a novella, was included along with A Floating City in the first english and french editions of this work. This translation, which follows that of Sampson and Low (UK) and Scribners (US) is by "N. D'Anvers", pseudonymn for Mrs. Arthur Bell (d. 1933) who also translated other Verne books. It is also included in the fifteen volume Parke edition of the works of Jules Verne (1911). There is another translation by Henry Frith which was published by Routledge (1876). Both of these stories are about ships; Floating City about the largest ship of the time, the Great Eastern, and Blockade Runners about one of the fastest, the Dolphin.

Book excerpt: A Floating City (French: Une ville flottante) is an adventure novel by French writer Jules Verne first published in 1871. It tells of a woman who, on board the ship Great Eastern with her abusive husband, finds that the man she loves is also on board "The Blockade Runners" (French: Les forceurs de blocus) is a 1865 short story by Jules Verne. In 1871 it was published in single volume together with novel A Floating City as a part of the Voyages Extraordinaires series (The Extraordinary Voyages). An English translation was published in 1874. The American Civil War plot centers on the exploits of a British merchant captain named James Playfair who must break the Union blockade of Charleston harbor in South Carolina to trade supplies for cotton and, later in the book, --SPOILER--. Verne's tale was inspired by reality as many ships were actually lost while acting as blockade runners in and around Charleston in the early 1860s Jules Gabriel Verne (French: 8 February 1828 - 24 March 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright best known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction. Verne was born to bourgeois parents in the seaport of Nantes, where he was trained to follow in his father's footsteps as a lawyer, but quit the profession early in life to write for magazines and the stage. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne is generally considered a major literary author in France and most of Europe, where he has had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. His reputation is markedly different in Anglophone regions, where he has often been labeled a writer of genre fiction or children's books, largely because of the highly abridged and altered translations in which his novels are often reprinted Verne has been the second most-translated author in the world since 1979, ranking between Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare. He has sometimes been called the "Father of Science Fiction," a title that has also been given to H. G. Wells and Hugo Gernsback.

제목 플로팅 시티(A Floating City)는 해군 건조의 걸작(a masterpiece of naval construction)이자 수많은 승객으로 북적거리는 그레이트 이스턴 호를 은유하는 표현입니다. ▶ CHAPTER I. This steam-ship is indeed a masterpiece of naval construction; more than a vessel, it is a floating city, part of the country, detached from English soil, which after having crossed the sea, unites itself to the American Continent. I pictured to myself this enormous bulk borne on the waves, her defiant struggle with the wind, her boldness before the powerless sea, her indifference to the billows, her stability in the midst of that element which tosses “Warriors” and “Solferinos” like ship’s boats. But my imagination carried me no farther; all these things I did indeed see during the passage, and many others which do not exclusively belong to the maritime domain. If the “Great Eastern” is not merely a nautical engine, but rather a microcosm, and carries a small world with it, an observer will not be astonished to meet here, as on a larger theatre, all the instincts, follies, and passions of human nature. ▶ CHAPTER XXXVIII. Corsican, the Doctor, and I went towards Table Rock, but I did not want to disturb Fabian. Ellen was as motionless as a statue. What impression was this scene making on her mind? Was reason gradually coming back to her under the influence of the grand spectacle? Suddenly I saw Fabian step towards her. Ellen had risen quickly, and was going near to the abyss, with her arms extended towards the gulf; but all at once she stopped, and passed her hand rapidly across her forehead, as if she would drive away some thought. Fabian, pale as death, but self-possessed, with one bound placed himself between Ellen and the chasm; the latter shook back her fair hair, and her graceful figure staggered. Did she see Fabian? No. One would have said it was a dead person coming back to being, and looking round for life! (The Blockade Runners by Jules Verne)(1865)은 10장으로 구성된 모험 소설(Adventure stories)로, 경이의 여행(The Voyages extraordinaires)의 일부입니다. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First English edition of a classic Verne novel. Jules Verne, celebrated French author of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days, wrote over 60 novels collected in the popular series "Voyages Extraordinaires." A handful of these have never been translated into English, including Invasion of the Sea, written in 1904 when large-scale canal digging was very much a part of the political, economic, and military strategy of the world's imperial powers. Instead of linking two seas, as existing canals (the Suez and the Panama) did, Verne proposed a canal that would create a sea in the heart of the Sahara Desert. The story raises a host of concerns — environmental, cultural, and political. The proposed sea threatens the nomadic way of life of those Islamic tribes living on the site, and they declare war. The ensuing struggle is finally resolved only by a cataclysmic natural event. This Wesleyan edition features notes, appendices and an introduction by Verne scholar Arthur B. Evans, as well as reproductions of the illustrations from the original French edition.
